Boston College is ranked 11th nationally, 2nd in ACC; they've got four starters back from last year, and should be able to name score vs Dartmouth squad that improved to 10-17 last year after a 3-25 season the year before.

Central Michigan has just 16 wins last two years; their leading scorer left team over summer, but that will help team chemistry. Chippewas have seven freshmen, five sophs, two juniors; they figure to struggle, at least early on. Michigan has their whole team back, but they finished last year on 1-13 skid. Wolverines did win NIT two years ago, so there is talent. Part of reason they skidded was that Horton was suspended; he's back now.

Marshall lost three of top six scorers from 6-22 team, now they're moving up to C-USA. They hope bringing in JC guards will be a help. Herd was 1-8 on MAC road last year, although they did beat West Virginia in December. Evansville was 11-17 last year, the worst defensive team in MVC; they lost top two scorers of a year ago. Aces were 2-8 last year in games decided by five or less points.

UL-Lafayette went 20-11 and made NCAA's last year, but loses three double figure scorers from that team; they brought in JC guys and transfers to fill holes. Southern Illnois has 104 wins in last four years; they're young and talented, losing three starters from team that beat St Mary's in NCAA first round last March. Both sides have 20+ wins in each of last four seasons.

Ben Braun brings his Cal team to Ypsilanti to play his old team, Eastern Michigan; Bears' star Powe might have stress fracture, which is scary for Cal team that is depending on Powe to help them improve on last year's 13-16 mark. Kansas transfer Wilkes is also expected to help. Eastern has new coach in Ramsey, one of Braun's former players at EMU; he lost four of top 6 scorers from last year's 12-18 team, so he has work to do. Braun will win 500th game tonight, or Ramsey will win his 1st.

LMU went 3-11 in WCC last year, so they have new coach, the former Arizona assistant Rodney Tention; they have 3 starters and 11 of top 13 guys back, but his best player blew out a knee and is done for year. They're picked last in WCC. BYU also has a new coach, after 9-21 season; they lost three starters from that team, and are also picked to finish last in their league this year.

San Francisco lost its top two scorers from and both PGs from last year, but they didn't exactly share ball well last year, so new guys have room for improvement, although there are lot of new guys. UCSB had so many injuries last year that they played part of season with a rotation of six guards and a center; they have 4 starters back from 11-17 team, can contend for Big West title.

Gonzaga is once again picked as top 20 (6th) team; they have 4 starters back from 26-5 team that was disappointed when they lost in second round of NCAA's last year. Bulldogs are headed to Maui after game, so they could be looking past Idaho squad that had 291 RPI last year, is moving up from Big West to WAC, and is losing three starters from 8-22 team.

Yale has whole frontcourt back from last year, when they were 11-16 (7-7 in Ivy), but lost five games either in OT by one point. Their guards are new, questionable. Louisiana Tech has leading returning rebounder in nation, and a senior backcourt. This is a neutral court game in Lincoln, NE.

Colorado has weird roster with 10 seniors and all five starters back from team that beat Texas in Big 12 tournament last spring. No one else in country has more than eight seniors. Buffs were 11th in Big 12 in defense last year. NC-Wilmington just won the BCA tournament in Laramie, beating Butler, Northwestern and the host Wyoming, so they're off to great start.

Long Beach State has 21 wins the last three years, but they won eight of last 10 games last season, so they're optimistic, with 4 of top five scorers back and some good JC guys coming in. The Runnin' Rebels lose three starters from last year's 17-14 team, so they have lot of new guys, including freshman PG from Houston Rebels were poor on defense last year. This used to be a league game, during the Tark days, but with UNLV in MWC, there is bit of a class difference now.

UConn visits Malibu on way to Maui to play Pepperdine, which dumped Jayhawks on similar visit recently. Huskies are picked 1st in the nation by Blue Ribbon and have four starters back from a 23-8 team that lost in NCAA second round last spring. UConn had some off-court issues, with players stealing laptops, but that is all settled, apparently. Waves lost their top 4 scorers from last year, and were hit harder by attrition than any team in the highly-competitive WCC.

Northeastern moves up to CAA from America East this season; they have four starters back from 21-10 team, though, so they have some talent. They have senior PG who scored 22 ppg last year and passed up NBA Draft. Brown has four starters back from a 12-16 team and is expected to have better chemistry and balance this year. Bruins have just one senior, though.

Billy Tubbs has four starters back from 18-11 team at Lamar, as they trek to Alaska; they are picked 2nd in Southland and have better size depth than they've had in years. Southern Miss lost its leading scorer this fall; they're missing four starters from last year, as Eustachy's program inspired some transfers, in addition to normal graduation losses. He wasn't sure who the PG will be so Lamar would appear to have leg up in this game.

Old Dominion is highly touted as sleeper for March; they're 8.5 point favorite on neutral court over Georgia, so oddsmakers not sleeping on the Monarchs, who have four starters back from last year's 28-6 club that made NCAA's (81-89 vs Michigan St). Georgia as no seniors, and nine of 11 scholarship kids are either freshmen or sophomores, so Felton has team on upswing, but still a very young team.

Wisconsin lost four starters from 25-9 team, second straight yr he has lost four starters, and he doesn't have lot of experienced guys to fall back on; over 60% of last year's playing time is now graduated. Not sure it matters vs Norfolk State squad that was 13-14 last year and must find a new point guard, although they are thought to be one of better teams in MEAC, a weak league.

Winthrop has all five starters back from 27-6 team that lost 74-64 to Gonzaga in NCAA's last spring; they're expected to win their league for fifth time in last six years while hopefully winning the Bg South's first-ever NCAA game. IUPUI is picked second in a tough MCC; they're deep, experienced and are replacing grads with tlaented transfers. Chemistry is their biggest question.

Rice lost its top two scorers from last year, as well as 63% of its scoring, so they have lot of holes to fill, and Wilson isn't exactly John Wooden out there. Marquette is moving to Big East; they are little down, after being 7-9 in C-USA last year and losing 1st round NIT game 54-40 at home. Best Marquette players will be sophomores, so they'll take lumos a little this season.

Texas Tech faces Wake Forest in consolation game in New York how would you like to have been around Coach Knight after the beating Tech took last night from Syracuse? Wake lost 77-72 to Florida, as they struggle without experienced PG. Consolation games, even in November, are impossible to handicap well.

Florida doesn't have star power of past years, but they're good on defense and are balanced on offense; their first two wins are St Peter's, Albany, no great shakes. This is very young Florida team. Gators are replacing three starters. Syracuse was life-and-death to beat Cornell in second game up at Dome; they looked shaky vs zones, so expect Gators to play some. Syracuse goes as McNamara goes; when he struggles with his shot, they have real trouble scoring. Orange will have home crowd on their side at Garden. Syracue is less experienced but deeper this season.

Western Carolina has already played, going 1-2 in Blacksburg; they have new coach, are playing NC State/Princeton system and trying to improve on 8-22 record that brought them a new coach. South Carolina has four starters back from 20-13 squad that won NIT title in March, which has not been good indicator for future success. Odom thinks he's headed to NCAA's with this team, though.

Tennessee Tech coach Sutton is recovering from illness that is rare but could cause paralysis, so they have interim coach and four starters back from 18-11 team that won regular season title in OVC. They are replacing their power forward. Dayton also has four starters back, from an 18-11 team; Flyers lost their PG, who transferred to Illinois, a big loss, so they're very thin in that position, but still expected to be a good team.

Ark-Little Rock lost all five starters from 18-10 team and is #4 pick in Sun Belt East, after winning it last two years. Trojans lost 79% of their scoring, 85% of their rebounding from last season. Appalachian State lost three starters from 18-12 team, but they are picked to win Northern Division of Southern Conference, despite losing two of their top three scorers and top board guy.

Georgia Southern lost 74-61 at Texas Tech after beating Portland 89-75, so they're off to solid start, and have advantage of having game under their belt. Eagles have three starters back from 18-13 team. Kansas State was 17-12 last year and has expectations, as well as three returning starters; they play four guards, so they're undersized, quick and usually very good at home.

Jacksonville State has eight seniors, second only to Colorado in nation; they were 8-22 last year, and finished season with only six scholarship players, but he has three senior guards back to lead team. Vanderbilt has four starters back from 20-14 club; this year's team is experienced and deeper than most Vandy squads. This might be most talented Vandy squad that Stallings has had

Austin Peay has three starters back from 13-19 squad; they are picked for fifth in 11-team OVC; they're a young team that lost a four-year starter in backcourt, so that'll take some adjustments. Western Kentucky is another fashionable Cinderella pick; they have three starters back from 22-9 squad, but their PG Rumph passed away last spring due to heart problems; they have that to deal with all season.

Idaho State has eight new players after a 9-18 season, seven of them transfers, so chemistry is issue off the bat. Kansas is also bringing in lot of new guys, having lost four starters from 23-7 team that lost to Bucknell in first round last March. Jayhawks are also off to Maui after game, in what will be best field in long history of that event. Kansas is young but talented; it'll take bit of time to determine what they really have.

Arkansas is also going to Maui; Razorbacks are picked for 2nd in SEC West, since they have four starters back from 18-12 team, and the rest of SEC had lot of attrition. Hogs actually turned the NIT down last spring, odd choice for team with lot of returrning players. Portland State won Big Sky regular season, then lost its first tourney game; they lost three starters and their coach, who went to Fresno State as an assistant, but hired a legendary D-II coach to take his place.

Canisius is picked 3rd in MAAC, with four starters back from an 11-18 team that was 10-9 after switching to its four-guard lineup. Sr G Downey is an all-league selection. Buffalo lost 2 starters from last year's 23-10 team that lost in second round of the NIT, after they lost MAC title game 80-79 on last-second tip-in. This is local rivalry, and Buffalo finally has the upper hand.

Delaware lost over 100 games to injury/illness last year, finished year 11-20, then graduated three seniors. Hens have legit NBA prospect in 6-8 F Nana, but are breaking in new PG. Citadel was 12-16 last year, 4-12 in league, but all five starters are back; they were 12-5 last year, before injuries and flu hit, and Bulldogs lost their last eleven games.

Montana has four starters back from 18-13 team that won title in Big Sky tourney then lost to Washington in NCAA's. Griz has a senior PG, good depth, with JC kids brought in to supplement the veteran returnees. Boise State has three starters back fronm 16-18 team; they're picked for sixth in WAC, after finishing 8th last year, but then losing in conference tourney final, winning at Nevada in process. Broncos have seven new players.
