Looking to vary the workouts a bit, and will be adding boxing to it. Curious if I should get the heavy bag, or try this item. I like the idea of programs for keeping my interest vs just doing a number of reps in on the heavy bag... but interested in seeing if any of you have used this and what you feel about it. (I will not be doing any karate on the item so no worries about kicks etc.)

Hey dogface,

I did competetive Muay Thai in high school & college and I have messed around with one of those before. They are better than the bags that are similar in portability and stature. Dont use bag gloves with them if you are just starting out, use 9 oz. You will hurt your wrists, trust me. As far as the kicking goes, you would be suprised you wont knock it over, but if it is on carpet or a wood, smooth floor you will move it all over the place.

You are correct, it will hold your interest better than a bag. Tape a picture on the face when you do body work.

FDC- That was funny!

INtheBLUE- Should I go more than 9 oz. for the extra workout component and resistance, or will the 9 be more than enough.I am sure there will be more information in the accompanying cd with it, but since you have done striking etc., would you suggest any stretches and anything etc., to consider before going for this...

I have one and like it, but my wrists always are a bit sore afterwards. But I always figured it was because I broke my hand in a fight a few years ago. Havent used it in awhile. I was amazed how much of a workout it actually is.

Believe it or not there isnt really anything that will help you much as far as warm up, unless you have a pool handy, swimming is the only thing that I have found that is close to the shoulder workout. 10 easys each arm for 5 mins should be fine, then head into the harder stuff. Dont dance around at first. It might be too much strain on your rhomboids. (swinging across your body) A 4 inch tear 13years ago taught me that. Just stand there and punch till you feel burn, then 5 more, switch.

9 is plenty!! after about 10 on and 10 off you shouldnt be able to lift your arms, at first. You wont be able to hold the beer after the first 2 days. Foreamrs will get huge! Biggest advantage to bag work is the energy that you get after doing it for a week. You wake up earlier, get more done, etc. It's unreal.

I know it is going to sound stupid but with Muay Thai, I really found Yoga helped to avoid straining muscles. I felt really gay, but I still do it today and I think it is what keeps me in shape and healthy. Havent been to the doctor, or even been sick, in 9 years except for twice with poison ivy, and I am always around a 3yr old and 1yr old. That's saying something.

GL dog, I still do speed bag and leg work on a heavy to this day and I have found it very rewarding.
