some new life in the mac championship. for the first time in a while, its not marshall, miami, or toledo in the title game.

akron's had a weird season. outright wins over northern illinois and bowling green, but also outright losses as DD chalk against central michigan and army, along with a loss at ball state. biggs has really come on strong lately for them. before the season, there were questions about his durability because he was a non-factor down the stretch last year. but any such questions this year were put to rest because he has been tearing it up lately. getsy has been up and down. sometimes, he looks like he'd be a better fit than palko at pittsburgh. other times, it's obvious why he transferred. still have some questions about their defense though. weather and weak competition contributed to some lower scoring games for them recently. but northern illinois is not ball state, nor are they ohio university or kent state. akron won the first meeting, but it wasn't because of great defense. to their credit, they were one of the few teams to keep garrett wolfe in check, but its obvious they were selling out for the run all day because horvath threw for 486 yards. obviously, horvath won't be playing tonight but theres no reason to think nicholson cant have similar success.

northern illinois has played like the best team in the mac lately except for their embarrassing loss to ball state at home as a 4 TD chalk. should be noted, however, that wolfe was out for that game with an injury and harris was just coming back from an injury too. still no excuse to lose as a near 30-pt chalk, but its obvious to anyone watching northern illinois the last 2 years that wolfe is the catalyst for this offense. if akron bottles him up twice this year, it would be a minor miracle. as far as nicholson goes at quarterback, you cant help but be impressed with the poise this kid has shown in 2-and-a-half games. he took over for horvath in the 1st quarter of the central michigan game on the road (when cmu was still in contention) and he threw for 300+ yards. then he went to toledo in 20-degree weather and completed something like 9 of his first 10 passes. and then last week against western michigan in the mac west-clincher, he managed the game and threw the ball well in very windy conditions.
so with weather being a non-issue inside the dome, no reason to think this kid wont play well tonight.

...back later

have done well in recent mac championship games. only recent one to not come through was the miami vs. bowling green title game in 2003 with roethlisberger at qb for the redhawks. that one definitely surprised me. otherwise, games have played out true to form.

went with the over tonight.
played it two days ago at 51.5.
its climbing thanks to both some sharp and square money.
no doubt that the casual bettor will want to play it over the number tonight. but just dont see it any other way. these teams have battled some absolute shit weather the last few weeks, so the final scores have been deceptive. the cozy conditions at ford field should do wonders for the skill position players. guys like dominek hixon for akron and sam hurd for nothern illinois havent had many opportunities to showcase their ability the last few games because of wind/snow. hell, akron didnt even put a punt returner back last week during the snow game against kent. and im really impressed with nicholson for niu -- this kid is going to be a stud for them in the coming years. if the game plays true to form, northern will jump out early and force akron to throw the ball. even though brookhart has taken a bit more of a running philosophy in recent weeks, the zips arent going to beat northern illinois by handing off to biggs 30 times. getsy is going to have to put points up. no real opinion on the side. northern illinois is definitely the better team but akron has an uncanny way of rising to the occasion as an underdog. think northern wins a 35-24 kind of game.

gl with whatever you guys play tonight as well as the rest of the weekend.

I like the over as well, may parlay it with ak +13.

did a little teaser just for a unit....

NIU -7
OVER 47

Don't usually do teasers in NCAAFB but didnt like the almost 3 point diff I got on your over line, and I think NIU blows them out of the water, so a teaser seemed applicable...GL bro

3seconds:

just got in and saw your post. fwiw, if you played that prop, i think its a good one. normally, a lot of props are coinflip, 50/50 kinds of bets. but that one looks really good. when the weather has not been a factor, hixon has been a big part of the game plan. not saying he cant play in bad weather, but rather, the zips just didnt throw a lot in those shitty weather games against army, kent, etc. but early in the season, he was a monster. think he has 5+ catches tonight. gl

that safety just played awful on that play, why cover the inside guy over the middle and leave the wr one on one on the outside. what a dumb player. nice win akron, no ill didn't deserve this one despite have a monster rushing attack tonight.

Yeah; if that was a prevent defense it was absolutely abominable execution. The whole point of the prevent is to give up the 10-15 yarder over the middle and absolutely NOT the home run ball. No point in playing the prevent if you're gonna allow that.

Had the over, so didn't matter to me but have a lot of NIU alumni friends, so I feel badly for them. Props to Akron though for hanging tough and pulling it out!

if nothing else, the mac championship games for both football and basketball within the last year have had amazing finishes.

akron rallies 80+ yds with no timeouts in the final 1:00 or so.

and then in basketball, ohio rallies from 19 down in the 2nd half against buffalo to win on a tip-in as the horn sounds.

spang -- i expect you to be in detroit on december 26th! the zippers are going bowling :scared
