Simpson arrested, suspended

Missouri will be without one of its top players when it faces South Carolina in the Independence Bowl.

Senior Jason Simpson, a team captain and starting safety for the Tigers, was suspended for his final college game after a drug arrest Sunday. He did not participate in this morning?s practice.
"He was suspended for disciplinary reasons and will not play nor attend the game," Missouri Coach Gary Pinkel said after practice.
Columbia Police arrested Simpson at 11:20 p.m. Sunday for an initial charge of failure to appear in municipal court. After a standard search, he was cited for possession of less than 35 grams of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. All three charges are misdemeanors.
Officers were initially dispatched to Simpson?s residence at 3001 S. Providence Road because of a loud music complaint. A search of Simpson?s name in the police department?s database revealed an outstanding warrant for his arrest for failure to appear in court for littering.
"They made contact with the individuals inside, and when they ran their information, his warrant popped up," Officer Dave Waldrup said.
After a search of the premises, the drugs were discovered.
"It looks like everything was in plain sight," Waldrup said.
Simpson was issued two citations on the drug charges and posted $100 bond.
Simpson, who has started 40 games during his MU career, is second on the team with 88 tackles and is tied for the team lead with 12 pass breakups. Redshirt freshman William Moore is listed as Simpson?s backup and was working with the starting defense today.
Simpson is the third MU starter in the past two years to be suspended after a drug or alcohol charge.
Marcus Bacon, MU?s starting strongside linebacker, was suspended for the New Mexico game this season after his arrest for driving while intoxicated on Sept. 3. Last year, linebacker David Richard was suspended for one game after a Sept. 11 arrest for marijuana possession.
● Pinkel announced today that senior receiver Sean Coffey, who suffered a separated shoulder against Baylor on Nov. 12, will not be able to play in the Independence Bowl.
