I was notified last week that someone tried to use one of my credit card numbers to purchase electronic gift cards!

Fortunately, the merchant was able to stop the transaction in time. I have obviously cancelled the credit card account and reported the crime to the police. The police department is too overwelmed with these types of crime to devote any real time to tracking down the thief. I have been working with the merchant to persue the SOB and turn them into the police.

I am nearly positive as to the identity of the person who did this. The merchant has provided me with the IP address of the computer used to attempt this crime. I have given this info to the police, but, again, they are swamped.

For the record, I am extremely careful with my credit info. I am not a victim of phishing or a computer hacker. I check all my account balances on a daily basis. The person I suspect is an employee of a business.

Does any know of a (free) way to accurately identify the computer location by tracing the IP address??

Thanks in advance for your help!!

Pet;

Thanks for your response. I did try the site you provided. However, the results are somewhat confusing and do not appear to provide any specifics???

emj, it can be done, but I think you have already discovered that the police are not going to help you with this. For you to get it done as an individual, I think you'll probably pay big bucks, so I doubt it would be worth it. There's not a website you can go to and plug in the ip addy and have John Smith from Mudlick, Kentucky come up. I sure wish there was. :cursin: If you're lucky, the ip address might come back to a dedicated line somewhere, like a business or a university. Otherwise, it's probably going to be some big company like AOL. Glad your merchant/bank caught this before it went any farther!! This site is probably similar to what you have already used. http://www.geektools.com/whois.php

Hey Franky..
I switched about a week ago.

Hope everything is going good for you. We didnt get the bar. We tried at 5 different places and kept getting turned down for not havin enough money down.(20%) The last place was a local bank up north. Everything looked good and the owners were even bringing in there deposit slips each week to show the bank how much it was bringing in. We were asking for 80%..owners were carrying 10 and we had the other 10 along with start up money. All the numbers were looking good.The damn bank board split 50-50. (We needed a majority) The wife and I decided to put it on the back burner for now. I chalk it up to a learning experience. I learned that its a whole lot easier buying a house than a business.

Hope you and your family have a Great New Years.
