I was notified last week that someone tried to use one of my credit card numbers to purchase electronic gift cards!
Fortunately, the merchant was able to stop the transaction in time. I have obviously cancelled the credit card account and reported the crime to the police. The police department is too overwelmed with these types of crime to devote any real time to tracking down the thief. I have been working with the merchant to persue the SOB and turn them into the police.
I am nearly positive as to the identity of the person who did this. The merchant has provided me with the IP address of the computer used to attempt this crime. I have given this info to the police, but, again, they are swamped.
For the record, I am extremely careful with my credit info. I am not a victim of phishing or a computer hacker. I check all my account balances on a daily basis. The person I suspect is an employee of a business.
Does any know of a (free) way to accurately identify the computer location by tracing the IP address??
Thanks in advance for your help!!
