Outright plays (total stake per play: 1.5pts)

K.J. Choi to win 28/1 e.w. @ Sportingbet, Sporting Odds, Paddy Power and BetDirect
International players have won here in each of the last four years and at such an early stage of the season, such ability to play in warmer climates during the off-season appears to be a sizeable advantage. That extends to the South Korean, K.J. Choi, who was competing and finishing 2nd in a co-sanctioned European Tour event in December, a full month after the PGA Tour had finished for the year. That mark was also the position in which he finished in his previous course appearance in 2003, when he set a course record of 62 which still holds today. If that was on his course debut and it took a very impressive performance from Ernie Els to beat him in 2003, and he is not present this week, Choi does look decent odds at 28/1.

Ben Crane to win 28/1 e.w. @ Stan James, BetInternet, Sportingbet, Sporting Odds and BetFred
The Plantation Course at Kapalua is famous for the enormous size of its greens and so it is not too difficult to back the player widely regarded as the best putter on Tour. Famous more for his slow play, he looked as though he would struggle to even be playing on this Tour a year ago after a back injury forced him away for nine weeks and to change his swing under Butch Harmon to minimise the damage to his back. He returned to not only finish 2nd in his sixth tournament back - Rory Sabbatini incident and all - but won the U.S. Bank Championship the following month and would record two further top-3 finishes in September and a 7th place finish in the Tour Championship, of which only two people who beat him that week are present in Hawaii. His short game is very well-suited to this course and his remodelled swing has enabled him to move up a level on this Tour. These odds don't do him justice in this field.

Bart Bryant to win 33/1 e.w. available generally
And nor does 33/1 on a player who won wire-to-wire in the Tour Championship in November and who beat a high class field to win the Memorial Tournament last year as well. It is important to have some previous course form in this event, not just because of the course, but because of the whole environment of the season-opening, family-holiday-type event. A year on, it will be less of a distraction and he has a much greater belief in himself that he can beat this field. He even received his first-ever invite to the Masters on December 23rd so there is a very strong feel-good factor with Bryant at the moment and he has spoken of this interviews. And he has also said that he likes his chances this week: "It fits my game pretty well. I am pretty much a low-ball hitter and it gets pretty windy there." Sounds good to me!

Worth knowing:

? Brad Faxon, who only began hitting full shots Dec. 30 following knee surgery in October, has decided he?ll give it a go on the Plantation Course. But don?t think he won?t be a factor. The new TifEagle Bermudagrass greens are icy smooth and slick, which puts more of a premium on putting and ball position.

? Former U.S. Open champion Jim Furyk, back at the Mercedes Championships after a one-year absence, is sporting new equipment, going with Srixon.

? It will be fascinating to watch the jockeying for the U.S. Ryder Cup team with a new points system that rewards 2006 performances. Points are worth four times as much as in ?05 and an extra 75 points goes to TOUR winners. That makes a victory worth 375 points. Tenth place is worth 20. A major victory is worth 675 points.

? Don?t bet on Fred Couples being a captain?s pick for the U.S. team; he might just qualify on his own. He has told swing instructor Butch Harmon and others that making the Ryder Cup team a fifth time is his primary goal this year after reveling in America?s Presidents Cup victory, not to mention his singles win over Vijay Singh.

? Former Masters champion Mike Weir might be in for a big rebound. Neck and back problems were the primary reasons the Canadian lefty went through a winless season in 2005, but the last time he struggled as much was ?02. The following season he won three times, including his first major title at Augusta National Golf Club.

TI?s strength of field index (1-10 scale): Not a loser in the group. 7.5.

TI?s power ranking for the Mercedes Championships: 1. Jim Furyk, 2. Vijay Singh, 3. Sergio Garcia, 4. Michael Campbell, 5. Stuart Appleby.

Happy New Year. Good luck in 2006.

Robert Gamez 100-1 e.w. @ Bet365
--Gamez hasn't played all that bad in his last three trips to Hawaii. He's never played here, though. Stan James has him listed at 66-1, which I believe is the sharper number.

Mark Calcaveccia 50-1 e.w. @ Sportingbet
--Calc has one fifth here and based on some of his comments I've read in the press he seems to be taking this tourney seriously and looking at it as an opportunity since so many good players are staying home.

Vaughn Taylor 66-1 e.w. @ Sportingbet
--I like the 8th place here last year and hopefully he can improve.

With such a small field and such big odds, there are plenty of opportunities with some of the higher-priced players in the each way market.

OUTRIGHTS:

Bart Bryant(28/1) e.w. @ Bet365
- - Per the usual, I'm far from being up to speed, but will get quickly immersed soon enough. Accordingly, best to start off slow . . . Bryant can make it look so simple, like it's supposed to look.

Going to take a look at new course set up before venturing out.
Lots of variables with manipulation of tees and greens being revamped. Rain and wind expected and while it is certain greens have new surface and contours can't find squat on if size has been reduced which will weigh heavily on GIR props. Did complete pass on all props today.

Any specific reason you are taking Vaughn Taylor, I know Purdy came on strong. Had an inside guy on the tour tell me that he is expecting big things from Ted this year, whether or not that comes to fruition this week or in 06 is to be determined but just looking for some analysis on this one.

Good luck in your plays
