Ben Roethlisberger

When you run the football as much as the Pittsburgh Steelers do, you find yourself in a lot of third-and-5 or less situations. There will be quite a few plays designed just to pick up the first down. So you have to be good at doing that, and Roethlisberger is. Also, your movement in the pocket -- just a little bit of scrambling -- can be huge.

Watch out for Ben Roethlisberger the runner. He had three rushing TDs on the season.
Looking back at the Colts game, Roethlisberger proved that in the very first drive. I think it was the first or second third-down situation they faced, he moved out to his right and hit his receiver for a first down. On the second touchdown drive, he moved to his right just enough to buy time for Heath Miller to get open in the end zone.

His movement, his ability as a very good play-action passer, fits into the Pittsburgh offensive system perfectly. So does his size. I've always said that size is a talent for a quarterback, and Roethlisberger uses his 6-foot-5, 241-pound frame to his advantage. It allows him to break arm tackles (and make arm tackles). It allows him to stand in the pocket as he's getting hit, to throw over the middle and make big first downs.
.......................................................................
Roethlisberger hit guys in the flats. He hit them downfield. He hit them on timing routes. He hit them on improvised ones. The Steelers scored on each possession of the decisive first half, sucking the life out of a potentially wild Invesco Field. Then when Denver mounted a mild rally late, Roethlisberger slammed the door shut with a fourth-quarter touchdown run of his own.

Most impressively, Roethlisberger made the dagger passes that speak of a veteran's confidence, most dramatically a 17-yard, thread-the-needle fastball to Hines Ward over double coverage that staked the Steelers to an insurmountable 24-3 lead just before halftime.

"He had a rocket," said Ward, who is no longer surprised at what his youthful QB can do. "He had a small window but he got it in there."

Roethlisberger didn't do that as a rookie.

Really like this kid. Sould be the differance

Was Hasselbeck going to mature into a legitimate leader? Or was he going to be the guy who was once benched by former Boston College coach Dan Henning (now offensive coordinator with the Carolina Panthers) and reacted by confronting Henning and telling him, "You should wear big red shoes and a big red nose because you are a clown."
............................................................................

Had to laugh when I read that one about Hasselbeck

Always like to use my wife to get a public reading on the Super Bowl , as she knows squat about football.

So I explain to her the Super Bowl is next Sunday and I tell her the teams who will be playing, where, turf, stadium, more pitt fans expected etc.

I explain the QBs and running backs and what they have done to get to the Super Bowl which takes just a few minutes.

OK honey. Who will win...

Seattle she says convincingly.

Thats what I was hoping she would say.

GO PITTSBURGH !!!!

Seattle offense vs. Pittsburgh defense Key Matchups: QB Matt Hasselbeck vs. NFL's 16th-ranked pass defense RB Shaun Alexander vs. NFL's 3rd-ranked run defense WR Darrell Jackson vs. LCB Ike Taylor TE Jerramy Stevens vs. SS Troy Polamalu C Robbie Tobeck vs. NT Casey Hampton RT Sean Locklear vs. LEs Aaron Smith and Brett Keisel

The Seahawks are the NFL's highest scoring team with 28.3 points per game. Against Carolina in the NFC championship game, Holmgren used the passing game in the first half to help set up the running game. Alexander finished with a franchise-record 34 carries, running behind Pro Bowl fullback Mack Strong. Alexander loves to run left behind Pro Bowlers Walter Jones and Steve Hutchinson. Suited to make quick reads in the West Coast offense, Hasselbeck could feel comfortable against the Steelers' blitzing schemes. He will look for Stevens and Jackson on quick routes. Jackson has been Hasselbeck's favorite target in the postseason, catching 15 passes for 218 yards and two touchdowns in the postseason. Hasselbeck also has shown to be adept at scrambling.

Pittsburgh offense vs. Seattle defense Key Matchups: QB Ben Roethlisberger vs. NFL's 25th-ranked pass defense
RBs Willie Parker and Jerome Bettis vs. NFL's 5th-ranked rush defense WR Hines Ward vs. LCB Andre Dyson TE Heath Miller vs. SS Michael Boulware C Jeff Hartings vs. MLB Lofa Tatupu LG Alan Faneca vs. RDT Rocky Bernard

The Steelers no longer are just a run-oriented team. Roethlisberger has been given the chance to make plays in the passing game and has demonstrated that he is more than capable. In the AFC championship game at Denver, Roethlisberger came out throwing and was effective. He did the same against top-seeded Indianapolis in the divisional playoffs. Pittsburgh's offensive line provided superb protection, picking up all the blitz schemes. Now they go up against a team that led the league with 50 sacks. The key to offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt's game plan is spreading the ball around to Ward, Antwaan Randle El, Cedrick Wilson and Miller. Fullback Verron Haynes also is effective as a receiver on third down. The Seahawks are difficult to run on, but Parker and Bettis will get their carries. If the Steelers have the lead in the second half, we will see alot of Parker and Bettis.
............................................................................

Seattle has the 25th ranked pass defense in the NFL..

Uh oh......

And when you consider Alexander ? the 2005 league MVP who led the NFL in rushing with 1,880 yards and set a league record with 28 touchdowns - entered the game with 94 yards rushing in three previous playoff games and had some questions of his own to eradicate.

He answered with a club-record 132 yards rushing and two touchdowns.

?I don?t know, I just can?t stop smiling,? Alexander said. ?This was just a great feeling. I woke up this morning and went downstairs to get some breakfast and my wife turned on the news, which she never does, and said, ?Every channel is about us
......................................................................................

Well arnt you special.

I firmly believe that if there is something to be exploited on the Seattle Seahawks team it is Alexander at the running back position.

It has been said about him

He doesn't run as hard between the 20-yard lines as he does in the red zone. He either can't, or won't, block in pass protection. He is a selfish player in the ultimate team sport.

Selfish player trying to win the Super Bowl to cash in a big free agent check next year usually dont work out too good

Put that up against the Bus who just wants to run over someone and bloody noses and is not worried about the big pay day anymore.

As big as he is , Alexander just does not run hard and seldom runs over ppl. I realize running for 1800 yds is quite a accomplishment, but look at who he ran on and why he couldnt break the elusive 2000 yd mark.

Steelers are going to stick Alexander and shut him down. Cowher will have to scheme the Seahawks offensive line to do it though.

You can say well Hasselbeck didnt need Alexander when he went down with a concussion in the Panthers game. That hit just didnt look that hard to me. Steelers may crack his helmet in half.

In the Super Bowl , Alexander will be needed. He will not be able to not show up in this game.

Its a big key to making the cash. I just dont think he will step up to the plate vs this Steelers defense.

When Alexander doesn't show up

I will meet you on Glory Rd, it runs right off of Victory Lane and that is where I live.

Is there going to be a focal point player in this Super Bowl, in a town where Tonya Harding once commissioned a thug to break competitive ice skater Nancy Kerrigan's leg? If there is, it will be Pittsburgh's Joey Porter, a man overflowing with testosterone.

"They don't want to play smash-mouth football. They want to trick you," said Porter, suggesting the Colts were a finesse team a couple weeks ago.

The Seahawks played one game indoors this season, winning at St. Louis. Pittsburgh was 2-1 ? losing at Indianapolis but winning at Minnesota and then shocking the Colts in the playoffs. Holmgren's record in playoff games is 11-8 and, overall, he's won 149, lost 94. Cowher is 11-9 in the playoffs, 152-91-1 overall.

Scott way off in your Alexander analysis. 1800 yds. is 1800 yds. I don't care if it's in the arena league. If it was because of being in the NFC then every RB should have 1800 yds. When is the last time you took a hit on an NFL field, so how do you know how hard the hit was? Alexander is by far one of the most underrated backs in the game. Selfish player, he's spent his career in Seattle when he could of gone anywhere. That's right he would be third string on the steelers.

Alexander depends on his offensive line as all running backs do. Fortunately for him Seattle has a good one. But in this Super Bowl game, the run will be stuffed and Alexander will be disappointed he wont get his headlines.
Low jack runner that he is.

Yeah, just like Emmitt Smith. Product of his offensive line. Won the rushing title and set an all time record for TD's in a season... Guess Thomas Jones could have done that behind Seattle's Best Offensive Line in NFL history

Pitt. has to game plan to stop the run first as do most NFL teams. Don't sleep on this sea. pass game.

The colts also have a very effective offensive line.

Ask Manning what happened. He was running for his life back there on almost every play.

so did the LA Express (XFL) what happened to them the league folded. So did the Pats. they only won 3 Bowls. This is about Alexander not the grape stomper Manning.

Its pretty funny calling your wife "the public" when you are the only source of the information upon which she makes her decision.Your analysis of Seattle is not careful, accurate or even unbiased, something required in successful handicapping. You are wrong about Seattle in many ways.Imagine for a moment what is going on in Alexanders head with all the focus on a Pittsburg runner that had two carries for what...5 yds last week? He's MVP of the league, ran for over 1800 yds amd you still voice criticisms of him that were popular(surprise) BEFORE this year.Even Holmgren, his toughest critic, has taken back all that "doesn't-run-tough-up-the-middle-doesn't-block"bs,or hadn't you heard cause you haven't really paid close attention to Seattle this year. His o line will give the Steelers d line and backers all they want, and he'll get a lot more chances and do more with them tham Willie parker or Bettis will with theirs. They will run better then pittsburg does, they will throw with less pressure on the QB than pittsburg has on their QB,and their defense will show its better than you and probably Pittsburg thinks it is right now.Name the last team to run effectively against them ,before assuming that Pittsburg easily will do so as a given. Its been the theme of Seattles' season the type of criticisms you are voicing, just the team being touted to beat them just changes every week. One things for sure, this is the last week they'll have to hear it.
