I took my mom to the hospital around 1 am sat nite/sunday morning.......needless to say Hospitals move slower than slow and didn't get home until breakfast time 6:30........She's suffering from major back pain thats causing her nausea, the shakes and she can barely move, sit, lay down....to boot shes all worked up about it.....they diagnosed her with acute sacroilitis......its a join at the top of the buttocks(docs terms)....they gave her morphine there and then a script for percocets......she was better during the day on sunday and then went to work today(which i advised her not too)

Now she said the pain is back and is bad as it was before but also moved to the outside of her right hip.......Shes all worked up again, shaking like a leaf, can barely move.....she keeps icing it, which i told her not to ice so often and to keep heat on it.....she is in severe pain and my question is, has anyone had this and what did you do to treat it and how long did it last?.....thanks guys, I really appreciate a response and please no jokes

I've never had this exact condition, but I've lived with back pain for many years. Did she have some sort of trauma or accident that caused this pain?

First, ice is better than the heat for what you are describing. You want the inflammatory response to be stopped, not accelerated.

Second, she's needs to go back to the doctor. Hopefully, she has a good general practitioner that knows and can treat her. The ER doctor only gave her pain medicine, and if she truly has Sacroiliitis (I would think that's not an easy diagnosis to make without a full medical workup and MRI) she needs to be on anti-imflamatory meds, steroids, and possibly antibiotics. Physical therapy also is helpful with this.

Third, the shaking and nausea that she is having is probably her body's reaction to pain. Pain is very individualized, and people react to it differently. Has she had any fevers?

Lastly, hope she gets to feeling better soon, and get her back to her own doctor ASAP.

Did they X-Ray her??? Have they checked for compression fractures of the spine??? VERY painful and often with radiating pain when they fractures are in the lower spine. Elderly people do not have to fall to sustain compression fractures of the spine, it is a result of aging and a some other contributing factors.

Try to find a very good, highly credentialed, highly recommended, chiropractor for an opinion. I can't tell you the things that the Doc's prescribed and wanted to do for my wifes pain that would not go away and spread from back to buttocks to leg....Finally, on a recommendation we went to a good Chiro who smiled at the 6 months of nonsense and told my wife she had a sciatica problem and she fixed it within a week or so.
I'm not suggesting that is the problem but only that I now value the opinions and the work (for my periodic lower back) of my well respected Chiropractor...........Another opinion may help.

thanks guys, just got back from class( if you don't know, i went back to college).......She did get x-rayed and nothing.....she thinks she injured herself at Curves(ladies gym) doing some kind of leg movement, she said she felt something different but kept on going anyway....... So anyway, I was surprised the docs didn't give her meds to treat the inflammation of the joint, they just gave her the percocets for the pain and pretty much sent her on her way....I was very unhappy with the treatment from the hospital, especially them not believing her of how much pain she was in......

So she called a chiropracter, he wont be in until 3 today and I guess I should have her call the family Doc? Who should she go and see first, our family MD. Oh and SixFive, no fevers...but she gets the shakes, hot flashes and cold sweats....not all the time, but occasionally......I kept telling her to stay home today, which I don't think she had a choice, but shes laying down right now and icing it now. I really appreciate the info guys........

Sounds like either a pinched nerve or a pulled muscle..........I have had both, Chiro fixed it.

The Chiro said he thinks its a pinched nerve......he took x-rays today and wants to see her tom morning(after hes looked over the x-rays)...for now he said take 6 to 8 hundred milligrams of ibprofen(sp?) and ice it.......thanks again for the info guys
