Robert Wright op ed...

"Amid the cartoon protests, some conservative blogs have warned that addressing grievances expressed violently is a form of “appeasement,” and will only bring more violence and weaken Western values. But “appeasement” didn’t work that way in the 1960’s. The Kerner Commission, set up by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1967 to study the riots, recommended increased attention to the problems of poverty, job and housing discrimination, and unequal education — attention that was forthcoming and that didn’t exactly spawn decades of race riots.

The commission recognized the difference between what triggers an uproar (how police handle a traffic stop in Watts) and what fuels it (discrimination, poverty, etc.). This recognition has been sparse amid the cartoon uproar, as Americans fixate on the question of how a single drawing could inflame millions.

Answer: depends on which million you’re talking about. In Gaza much of the actual fuel came from tensions with Israelis, in Iran some fundamentalists nursed longstanding anti-Americanism, in Pakistan opposition to the pro-Western ruling regime played a role, and so on.

This diversity of rage, and of underlying grievance, complicates the challenge. Apparently refraining from obvious offense to religious sensibilities won’t be enough. Still, the offense in question is a crystalline symbol of the overall challenge, because so many of the grievances coalesce in a sense that Muslims aren’t respected by the affluent, powerful West (just as rioting American blacks felt they weren’t respected by affluent, powerful whites). A cartoon that disrespects Islam by ridiculing Muhammad is both trigger and extremely high-octane fuel."

what a steaming pile of grade -a bullshit..

this guy needs a history lesson...before islamic history is taught to him at the edge of a sword....

a lame comparison, imo, since blacks were /are an actual american underclass with very serious greviences and islamists are bloodthirsty enemies bent on destroying western civilization...

the n.y. times never fails to disappoint...

Some questions for you, Weasel.

1) Was Fox News appeasing the Muslims when they didnt show the cartoons?

2) Do you know the definition of an editorial page?

3) Do you know what region the NY Times sits in the heart of?

4) Do you know the overwhelming political party of the customers it serves in that region?

5) Can you put 2 and 2 together and STFU about this crap for like ....oh maybe a few seconds?

Little doubt what side NYT take on our troops vs terrorists.
--but then again NYT has taken hits on circulation/ads ect--so what goes around comes around.

on showing not showing cartoons--I believe it was taking others into consideration--maybe we have have learned from NYT/Newsweek fiacos.

If muslims plan any protesting in my area--I have my water pistols loaded with pigs blood--let em come :)
Seriously-- you will only see them protesting in regions they know will put up with it. I can only think of 2 general areas off top of my head--not surprisingly it is same area ACLU has been on their profiling agenda and where most of 911 terrorist found sanctuary.
--and I might add most probable areas of next attack--are you seeing the light --YET?????

ouch.....i get the editorial part..but,this is justanother example of more of the nyt`s"world workers party" propaganda machine/ party line....

are you saying that the times` leftist bent is just playing to the throwback 60`s hippies?.....or the self-centered, immature nanny-state metro-sexual pussy-footers?.....lol

my brotha.......think about it...

you see any confusion in this piece when the writer compares religion with race..the fight for civil rights with the fight for totalitarianism......islam is a religion, black/african american is a race......

the increasingly twisted reasoning of msm/left is literally making my head hurt.....everything in their worldview is reduced to either vietnam or the civil rights movement.......

equating 'american blacks' with radical islam as this guy does, is far-fetched, offensive, dangerous and just plain weird....

islam is a religion that prohibits the existence of other religions, of gay people, of non-believers, of separation of church and state, it prohibits women voting, drinking, free speech, sexual freedom, and just about anything that we would recognize as a feature of our free and open western society....

why would this reporter imagine that the black civil rights movement has anything whatsoever to do with the anti-civil rights movement of islam?

what a lousy analogy....

I wasn't addressing the actual comparison in the editorial. It's an editorial - I really don't even care what they're on about in it. FOR THE RECORD - I totally agree with your viewpoint on the actual comparison being bogus. I think I've been pretty obvious in my insulting of Islamic assholes, Muhammed, Allah, and all those freaks.

I'm trying to help you understand that the NYT like any free enterprise venture somewhat refelcts it's customers. Most of it's customers obviously lean to varying degrees left of the dial. Therefore, what you read in the editorial page will reflect that.

If I wanted to waste a bunch of time I could scour through the editorials of countless heartland papers and repeatedly reveal a right-leaning sentiment in an attempt to keep up with you. But I think you understand my point.

I'll again ask #1 as you still never answered. Was Fox News catering to the Muslims when they didn't show the cartoons?

here`s an interesting little story..

you guys want humor...i got a truckload...

""Aliye Cetinkaya, a journalist from the Turkish daily Sabah newspaper, who was reporting on the recent protests over the offensive caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed, was stoned in Konya for reasons demonstrators said were provocative – as she did not cover her head. Cetinkaya was taken away by male colleagues after stones hit her head and shoulders. The female journalist was attacked for being ‘sexually provocative’ for not wearing a head scarf at the demonstration organised by the Peoples Education Research and Support Group in Konya (He-Da-Der) and entitled ‘Loyalty to the Prophet’.

A group of protestors insisted that Aliye Cetinkaya get off the bus where she was reporting the march, as they claimed she was provoking the crowd. At this moment, somebody started reciting the Koran into a microphone.

Approximately 30 people then started throwing stones at Cetinkaya, seated with her legs dangling from the back of the vehicle and taking notes. They claimed that her clothes and way of sitting was inappropriate while the Koran was being read, and shouted words of abuse at her.

Cetinkaya had to be rescued by her colleagues and said, “We were doing our job as journalists. But apparently some people found that not covering my head was provocative. They called me a blasphemer while I was sitting on the bus. They threw stones and shoes. As a reporter from Konya I was ashamed."""

hmm... ..a mob of the unemployed throwing stones at the employed? ....

anybody else remember all those stonings in elementary school?(well slap my fanny and call me abdul :142crying )......they were a riot... :thumb:

seriously, this story should be emailed to every single leftwing feminist in academia....

not that it would make a difference...they would still find a way to turn it on "bush" and the "little eichmans"......

Why do you turn such a horrific story into some kind of pro-Bush / anti-Liberal soap box preaching? Really, I don't see the connection whatsoever. This is a pretty horrible thing. What do American femenists and Bush have to do with it at all? It's not like either could possibly have any influence over this. You think a femenist will change their stance on American politics because of this? You think Bush could have stopped it?

Hey - was Fox News catering to the Muslims when they didn't show the cartoons?

Oreilly stated on Fox he would not show cartoons as he felt it could only cause threat to others by stirring up more violence--you know like NYT 43 days front page and Newsweek fiasco--I thought I already answered this here.

"If I wanted to waste a bunch of time I could scour through the editorials of countless heartland papers and repeatedly reveal a right-leaning sentiment in an attempt to keep up with you. But I think you understand my point."

Careful what you wish for Smurph--We'll build a fence and confine you to the liberal voting block. ;)

In London another protest against the publication of cartoons brought more than 10,000 Muslims on to the streets yesterday.

Why in Europe and not here--not hard to figure out is it.

I thought there were just protests here a couple days ago? I don't know for sure as work has been hell the past few days, but I thought I recalled reading that in here somewhere...
