Read in the sports page this am that goal differential counts toward home ice advantage ONLY if the two teams have NOT played each other earlier in the tournament. Article stated that the "little known IIHF rule trumps statistical tie-breakers such as won-loss records and goal differential."

It is being applied in the Canada/Swe women's gold medal game today. Canada was the home team in their first meeting and is the visitor today, despite having kicked Swe's ass 8-1 their first meeting.
