Hello all,

I've heard the french quarter is up and running and that the harrahs reopened this weeked. My buddy lives down there and said things are pretty ripe for a good time.

In any case, planning a bachelor party and the weekend everyone had open was at the end of April.

It coincides with the Jazz Festival. Is this a good weekend to go, or will there be a higher level of seedy folks down there?

I think you guys get my drift. I'm just trying to figure out if that makes it an even better thing or takes away from that specific weekend.

Thanks for your help.

I'll try to say this as nicely as possible without trying to sound like a racist...

I remember last year at least 1 shooting during the jazz festival. Is it it equivalent of biker week in myrtle for the black folk? Don't exactly want to be there if it's going to draw that type of crowd.

There may be more NBA fans than Hockey fans, but don't let it worry you. It's ok if your vanilla arse is a minority once in a while. moon1

Saint it is a JAZZ FESTIVAL, don't expect the crowd to look like they are there for a John Denver concert. Like you, most of the people are there for the music and the expirence.

Nawlins (as a city) is above average for violence. Be smart, stay in the crowded areas, and keep your wallet in you front pocket.

The mayor said when all was said and done its going to be a chocolate city...

Now I'm not trying to be racist (LOL), but **** NEW ORLEANS....

I'll keep my vanilla ass and CASH out of the city, and they can do what the hell they want over there. The city will cater to all the free loaders, and that's what N.O will turn into, all the big business folk won't be headin back there.

If there was 1 reported shooting at the Jazz Fest last year, it must mean that most of the "locals" are carrying knives !!!

Good luck if you head that way.

I disagree, I think in a few years things will be back up running full speed.

People like myself who don't live there or didn't grow up there don't care about that. All we want is to have a good time the 4 days we happen to be down there. From what I've read, despite what the mayor wants the flood was a natural way of 'cleansing' the city.

I honestly don't believe New Orleans will ever be the same. Just returned from a 5 day stint down there helping my brother-in-law fix some things. He was luckily on the west bank which didn't see any of the flooding. Took a jaunt over to the east bank and you wouldn't believe the devistation. Entire communities utterly wiped out. Hate to say it but they'd be better off with a bulldozer some gas and a match. You here how bad it is, but until you've seen it first hand it's hard to imagine just what it looks like. Downtown (french quarter) still smells like stale beer and piss, so that hasn't changed. High rise buildings still have windows that aren't replaced...thought that was weird.

....and the reason that nothing is getting fixed is that the ones with the ambition/JOBS, are NOT the ones that New Orleans are trying to get back to the city to get things right..

All they are worried about are the ones who were living in FREE housing, with GOVERNMENT assistance, wanting to know when their free houses are going to be rebuilt bigger and better than before....while on the other hand, folks with $$ able to rebuild are doing so...

IN BATON ROUGE, LAFAYETTE, .....NOT New Orleans...

The chocolate city will rot to death....but at least they'll be taking care of their own..

TRUE STORY....for my father in laws B-day last month, we took a limo to Metairie to Ruth's Chris, and ate there (even though they had no busboys, and we severely short staffed since so many got FEMA checks and no longer needed to work)....after we left, we were going to the Treasure Chest casino..where we drove up and were told that the VALET is now closed, so the limo had to drop us vanilla beans IN the bus lot and we'd have to take a bus like everyone else ...

OK..rules are rules, even though we didnt need a valet, just wanted to drop off by the door so the 70 yr olds didnt have to take a bus..

Long story short..when we were leaving (waiting for the shuttle to take us back to the bus lot where our limo was waiting), 2 drunk ass scraggling looking CHOCOLATE CITY natives get dropped off by a shitty looking New Orleans cab right by the door..

Hersey Kiss helping the Hersey Kiss...

By like I mentioned before, my moon1 aint spending no more $$ there.... :fingerc: :fingerc:

Oh and enjoy the JAZZ fest downtown, but keep your eyes opened at all times...I'd hate to be right about the people down there !!

Call him angry, call him rascist, call him whatever the hell you want, God knows I have, but one thing you have to call Schouest is honest.

He tells it like it is, even when it's not pretty.

I agree 100%...

Funny observation....went to buy fresh shrimp and crabs in Marrero. A gentleman and his companions pulled up in an escalade and proceeded to purchase many pounds of shrimp with aformentioned FEMA cards. I did a lot of head shaking when I was down there...

Everything Schouest says about New Orleans he is dead on right.

Besckster is also right, they need to bulldoze some parts of town to keep the rift raft away. I hated going to New orleans for anything. Too much rift raft and freeloaders in that town. You cant even walk on the Riverwalk without some rift raft drinking, sleeping, or being just stupid. Not a town where you want to bring young kids too.

Just a story about how these people dont want to work. My wife works at a nursing home 2 hrs from New Orleans. They have trouble keeoing aides and CNA's. I asked her why the problem. She said well they still have there FEMA money and now they have there income tax checks so they dont need to work. She said they will start asking about jobs around May when all there money runs out.

I can probably throw my 2 cents in on this one.
'
Just got back from new orleans last weekend. Tiffany had a wedding to stand in.

NOTHING HAS CHANGED IN 3.5 MONTHS since down there last.

East bank is a mess, still. Hell, my neighborhood still doesn't have electricity. AFTER FIVE MONTHS

Anyway, enought of that.

SURE, you can go to bourbon street,

MAKE SURE YOU SPEAK SPANISH!!!!
All the bars I use to hang out at play spanish music now. It's all laborers, mostly illega, i assume who get paid in cash each day and spend in the quarter each night.

Harrah's did open last weekend. Don't know how they did, but they did do 40 million in 'imporvements', so it should be nice.

JazzFest--???????????????

big question marks for me,

I'll buy the CD's

New Orleans city council passed bill to give 2.7 MILLION for mardi gras, and you have school kids with no books, people without homes etc.

WHERE ARE YOUR FRIGGIN!!!! PRIORITIES!!!!

I know Mardi Gras has sucked so far, noopne going. Where in the years past, you would have 5 people deep, this year 10 feet between reveliers, so who knows,

and yeah, I am biased, b/c I have seen such a GREAT city going down the shitter, and KATRINA could have been the flusher.

It will be years before New Orleans comes back.

My family and I, aka vanilla beans, are sorry we had to leave the way we did, but won't be going back

Good Luck

f'kn a, man! Colorado Rocky Mountain High, bro. RIP Johnny!

New Orleans jazz fest is great! Never went to Mardi Gras, but the place was so packed and jumping during Jazz week, I don't think I would have wanted any bigger crowd.

Probably won't be too crowded this year, but I bet it'll be interesting to say the least. ...Kinda like Lower Manhattan was interesting and surreal for visitors after 9-11.
