There are some nice parts, the East side next to Brown University is nice. But it is a city and has bad areas.
I like living outside Rhode Island (ask Shamrock we live in the same town)

Providence is pretty ok, come long way last decade or so. Money magazine or one of those voted it one of the most desirable cities to live in couple years ago.
