""Prime Minister John Howard has refused Muslim calls to censure Treasurer Peter Costello over comments he made about Islamic extremists.

And Mr Costello has challenged Muslim leaders to pledge their allegiance to Australia before they criticise him over his comments about citizenship.

Muslim leaders have called for Mr Howard to censure Mr Costello over his speech last night to the Sydney Institute in which he said anyone who believed Islamic sharia law could co-exist with Australian law should move to a country where they felt more comfortable.

Islamic Friendship Association president Keysar Trad said Mr Costello had unfairly singled out Muslims and was promoting division and Islamophobia.

But Mr Howard said Mr Costello’s comments were “fundamentally accurate”. “He’s not trying to stir up hostilities with Islamic people any more than I was when I made some comments three days before the Cronulla riots,” Mr Howard told Southern Cross Broadcasting in Melbourne.

Mr Costello said Muslim leaders should be pledging themselves and their followers to Australian values before they started criticising him.

“Rather than try and censure me ... they should make a clear statement that they subscribe to all of these views - that they are loyal to Australia, they respect the rights and liberties of others, they believe in democratic government and they believe that all Australians should live unequivocally under the one law made by the Australian parliament - and endorse these values and recommend them to their followers,” Mr Costello told Southern Cross Broadcasting.

“Pledge themselves unequivocally to these values first of all, and then call on their followers to pledge themselves unequivocally to these values. This is what I would invite them to do, rather than to criticise me because all Australians should in my view subscribe to these values.”

But Mr Trad said nobody was protesting against Australia’s secular laws through any other means than the normal democratic process.

“We have not asked for sharia law to be imposed,” he told ABC Radio. “I don’t know anyone in this country who is asking for sharia law to be imposed and I don’t known anyone in this country who has rejected the rule of law. I am genuinely hopeful that the prime minister will censure the treasurer over these ridiculous comments, that the treasurer is grossly out of line. Rather than try to promote understanding and harmony in this society, his comments are highly divisive and he is stirring up Islamophobia, and these comments should really be beneath any decent politician.”

Mr Trad said the Muslim community in Australia had disowned Islamic fanatics.

In his speech, Mr Costello said where there was reason to believe people were not truthfully or honestly meeting their citizenship test, there was every right for them to be denied citizenship. He likened entering Australia to entering a mosque, with people entering a Muslim place of worship expected to take their shoes off as a mark of respect.

“If you don’t want to take your shoes off, don’t go into a mosque. If you want to come into Australia, you will be asked respect for its values,” Mr Costello told the Nine Network this morning. “If you don’t have respect for those values, don’t ask to come into Australia. This is what we ask of people. We have to preserve a way of life which makes us the greatest country in the world.”

""Prime Minister John Howard’s suggestions that some Muslims are extremists who cannot embrace the country’s ways are offensive and ignorant, the Islamic Council of NSW says.

Mr Howard today said he stood by his comments outlined in a book to mark his 10 years in power, claiming sections of Australia’s Muslim population are antagonistic to Australian culture.

He said a commitment to jihad and extreme attitudes towards women were two problems unique to Muslims that previous intakes of migrants from Europe did not have, and that Australia wanted people to assimilate and adopt Australian ways. Mr Howard said today it was his “right and duty” to express his thoughts.

“I stand by those comments that there is a small section of the Islamic population in Australia that, because of its remarks about jihad, remarks which indicate an extremist view, that is a problem,” Mr Howard told reporters in Sydney.

“It is not a problem that we have ever faced with other immigrant communities who become easily absorbed by Australia’s mainstream.”

Australians wanted people to assimilate, Mr Howard said.

“We want people when they come to Australia to adopt Australians ways. We don’t ask them to forget the countries of their birth, we respect all religious points of views and people are entitled to practise them but there are certainly things that are not part of the Australian mainstream.”

The Prime Minister also expressed concern about Muslim attitudes to women.

“There is within some sections of the Islamic community an attitude towards women which is out of line with mainstream Australian society,” he said. “It needs to be dealt with by the broader community, including Islamic Australia. There is really not much point in pretending it doesn’t exist.”"

I thought Juice Newton was a failed spinoff of Fig Newtons? They were striped like Juicy Fruit gum, right?

No, Juice Newton is a respected artist who still plays to this day. Also, Juicy Fruit itself is not striped. Juicy Fruit is Juicy Fruit. I believe there is some Juicy Stripe thing or something. Not sure if it's still around but it probably is. Good luck.

I remember as akid looking forward to visits at Grandma Murphy's house in Newport News, VA because of 3 things: Ice cream floats that we made with RC cola, Otter Pops, and whichever version of Juicy Fruit that had the stripes. Man, that was some good shlt.

As for this Juice Newton thing, I don't know - doesn't sound so appealing. World has too many respected singers, but not enough truly delightful tasty treats.

Yeah...you guys might jump up and down about having the greatest country on Earth, but I wouldn't want to live anywhere else ;) :D

Actually, somewhat surprisingly, I quite like the guy....He's amazingly conservative...most of his Cabinet are amzingly conservative (some, like the Health Minister make it completely clear that their own views determine much of their policy...Howard doesn't, which I really applaud him for...), but yeah, I think he (and Costello in particular) has done good things for this country in the last 10 years...
...even admitting now that taking troops out of Afghanistan and sending them to Iraq was a mistake! (Mind you, there were only about 100 of them!! lol!)

Like I said, I repect what he has to say on religious grounds, simply because he 'hides' his own so well. He understands that religion is a personal thing and should be kept as such.

Don't really know what else to say...

...other than I have no idea who Juice Newton is!...Juicy Fruit comes in 3-4 flavours over here, but none of them striped....and smurphy, you forgot one...Death to Steve Irwin, the ****ing Crocodile Hunter! :cursin:

if you Aussies like it like that - i am your man.

Mr. C, if you understand him then you understand me - this was my main idea about that sf giant prayer deal. when you come to my country you conform to my country's ideals. don't try to make me change to yours. he should be applauded and i wish he was the mayor of Memphis, even if it was only part time.

i like that croc hunter dude, he makes me laugh. if i am thinking of the same guy.

"i will now look at the croc's esophagus by placing my head completely in its mouth, with hundreds of sharp teeth waiting to snap at any moment. from inside the croc's ............. :scared

Does she sound like Ann Murray? Are those the songs I hear pimped on late night k-tel commercials?

Yeah, sure - Steve Irwin has no problem sticking his head in a crocs mouth - but I'* like to see him in a room full of angry snapping Muslims trying to inspect esophaguses. That would take balls.
