when I was a kid, I think I oiled it down with 3-and-1 oil, put a baseball in the middle of the mitt and put a belt around it.

Now that it's 2006, has something else been invented that is a bit more up to date?

I'm giving my 6 year old his brothers glove which is nice and broke in but now my 9 year old needs a new one and practice is this week.

I'd really appreciate some thoughts on the subject.

Thanks.

Nole, you can buy gloves these days that almost feel as if they've been broken in for 5 years already. They're GREAT for kids.

Thanks Bahama Mama. I should have just shot you an e-mail.

Now I have to go to a sporting goods store named, 'Dick's". Great!

My first glove was a Wilson, Hank Sauer autograph (The Honker)

He played 15 seasons from 1941 to 1959.

I'm amazed I could remember that.

LOL Nole, and that is EXACTLY where i got my kids' gloves. (although it wasn't so bad for me to go in there) ;)

see if they still have the red/blue/black/silver webbed gloves. kids LOVE them. have like a built in batting type glove that velcro's around the wrist and holds the glove on. VERY broken in for first use, too.

The leather will be soft however I still suggest you work some linseed oil into the leather a couple of times to protect it and to further break it in. Then put a baseball in it wrap it with rubberbands or what ever then put it into a large ziploc bag and put it under the boys mattress for two days after that take it out and work a little saddle soap into it and the results will speak for themselves.

Also, not for nothing but the time spent with the boy showing him how to break it in and then having it under his mattress for two days anticipating that first game of catch with Dad with the glove you guys worked on together is worth the time and effort in my opinion. I still remember it.

Hope this helps,
FDC

AWWWWWWWW my specialty

Put your oven on 250 and put your glove in the oven for 20 minutes. Do Not put the glove in the oven until the timer beeps that it is 250 degrees. Let it get hot and toasty. Use linseed oil after baking it for 20 minutes. ;) ;) Some gloves take up to 30 min but 20 should be efficient. An old rememdy brought to you by Tim Raines and Gary Templeton.

Nole, here are a couple of pictures of the glove i'm talking about.... of course in my case, if ONE kid has one, the other has to have the same thing :( .... of course in our case it is one lefty and one righty glove....LOL (last year, they were the only kids i saw with them, and today at LL tryouts, there were 4 kids with the identical glove)

I agree with what others say about the bond of *teaching how to break in*, but that is something for a glove bought right AFTER a season.... when it's a season starting, nothing like the confidence a softened glove will give a kid when they are able to snag anything within reach!!

Good morning and thanks for the input!

I'm going to "Dick's" tonight and see what they have to pick from. (Dick's, I mean seriously, how do you sit around the table and decide on that for a name?)

That is a pretty snazzy glove there BahamaMama. Hopefully there will be one left.

Thanks again to all who made suggestions.

Gotta go to Mo's (Modells), heading there tonight with my son to get him a bigger glove. When I bought his last glove it was so soft it was basically broken in already, but I did buy this stuff that you put on the glove and then put the glove in the oven and it made the glove that much softer, worked pretty good...

Ding, ding, ding. We have a winner!

Hot glove!

I was going to go to Lowe's and pick up some linseed oil but before I left, I asked a clerk what they had to break in gloves.

Hot glove.

Baked the glove 3 times and worked it inside and out and now it's perfect!

Got a very nice pair of cleats and an XL cup(well, not really XL... :mj07: ) so we're ready to go.

Bahama Mama, I couldn't find that cool looking glove you posted but sure looked for it.

Thanks again everyone. Hopefully after this monsoon we're getting there will be a field left to play on.

Take care.
