Taking price into consideration, what's the best laptop computer on the market right now? I'm looking to buy one this week. I want it to be wireless so I can move around the house. Thanks in advance.

Go with an HP product. HP builts better products than Dell. There is innovation in a HP product. Dell just buys whatever is cheaper in mass quantity and puts it together.

If you want something with a 17" screen the go with the HP NX9420. Its new and just hit the market. Has all the bells and whistles and the latest technology.n Duo Processors and much more. I seen it and actually have it beside me giving it a little test drive. Very slick machine.

Otherwise, I own a NC8230, 15.4" wide screen and just a excellent built machine. Owned it for 5 months and love it. All the options. It was pulled off my desk by my german shephard one evening and still working fine. Its also backed with a 3 year warranty!

Either way you go, get the extended warranty (3 years) and think about the accidental warranty just in case it falls or if you decide to put your fist through your screen!

Go for a Sony, they are far superior to any laptop and I have friends that have tried the others.

Sony has the easiest to operate, latest technology, etc. I had one for over 4 yrs before it went bad on me.

Toshiba is good but they'll break after they make it past the warranty.

Dell is okay but heavy and the USB slots are in odd places on these machines, also they're overpriced when you customize them.

HP/Compaq is all right but their quality does not match up with Sony or Toshiba.

my only concern with Sony is everything (at least a while back) was proprietary, they seem to do their own thing an some devices are not compatible with Sony systems. I would be interested if they have made some headway in this area (I don't or ever have owned one). Just listening to some astute folks who have owned them.

Our business used to buy the Inspirons for our employees, but we have decided that they are not worth the savings over the Latitudes. Very similar we do not buy Dimensions anymore but instead buy the Optiplex. We have just found the reliability and life span of the step up is well worth the additional cost (which usually isn't too large).

I currently have the Latitude 600. My partner's fell out of his backpack the other day at the airport, and I was sure the thing was demolished becuase it hit HARD! We were both shocked that we weren't buying a new one.

I agree about Sony products. They are superior in some/many ways, but after you get burnt by their proprietary positioning once, then you will not risk it again. I will never own another Sony product due to this reason even though they are great products.

I can tell you what NOT to buy...

an IBM CRAPpad

I was forced to pay over 3g for mine when I started this program. It's since burned through 5 system boards and 1 hard drive in a little over 3 years. It's too bad I'm a moral person, or I'd chuck it in the ocean, pay my 250$ insurace and get a new one before I graduate!
