At what point when something breaks do you decide just to replace the shit?

Just the other day a couple parts on the furnace broke which, with labor would have ran me just over $600.00, a guy I know a little bit installs furnaces for a living and he told me he would put in a new high efficiency furnace for $1900.00 out the door.

I said screw it and just had the thing replaced and now it's guaranteed for 10 years. When my dad found out he told me I was nuts and should have just had the old one fixed, I mean he was really upset that I made a bad decision.

Well last night the thermostat on the hot water tank gave out, part is $80.00 and will take three business days to get here, I can get a new tank for under $300 and installed for nothing more than a case of beer and a handshake.

I prefer to replace shit since something else is probably gonna break on it anway?

Wasting money?

It depends on how old the furnace was to begin with. If its 15 yrs old and you got alot of use out of it, then 600 is too much to repair it imo and its time to replace it.

A furnace is not something you take chances with. Your dad sounds like mine, never wrong about much, old school.

Same applys to water heaters, if its past 10 years out the door with it.

Thanks Scott, yea, my dad is never wrong about much. Of course if you came home with a broken arm he would say those damn doctors charge too much and he would try to fix it himself.

The furnace was 15 years old and not very efficient so I feel good about replacing it.

Thanks Boyz, but I actually have sold many of these warranties with home purchases, and have never bought one myself. Reason being is they are prorated as to the life of the appliance, and in this case, an average life expectancy in the warranty for dishwasher would be about 10 years. (Check for accuracy, my guess)
10/5years= 1/2 off new appliance, add in the cost to take out, and install a new one, well you get the idea! :sadwave:
It pays to read the fine print on these things :com:

Not being a smart ass, just know how they work :mj17:
