saw coming attractions of a new movie about united flight 93 (the plane that went down in pa. on 9/11) when i went to see "inside man".....i told my wife & friend that i wouldn't see this movie because i thought it was too soon....eventhough the director has said that he has the approval of the family memebers of this flight, i still think the producers & director of this movie are being insentive...

i now see that i'm not the only one who feels like this....

anybody else have any feelings about this movie ?

A Dark Day Revisited

Five years later, Hollywood is betting that America is ready for films about what happened on 9/11. Are we?

By Sean Smith and Jac Chebatoris
Newsweek

April 10, 2006 issue - If movie trailers are supposed to cause a reaction, the preview for "United 93" more than succeeds. Featuring no voice-over and no famous actors, it begins with images of a beautiful morning and passengers boarding an airplane. It takes you a minute to realize what the movie's even about. That's when a plane hits the World Trade Center. The effect is visceral. When the trailer played before "Inside Man" last week at the famed Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, audience members began calling out, "Too soon!" In New York City, where 9/11 remains an open wound, the response was even more dramatic. The AMC Loews theater on Manhattan's Upper West Side took the rare step of pulling the trailer from its screens after several complaints. "One lady was crying," says one of the theater's managers, Kevin Adjodha. "She was saying we shouldn't have [played the trailer]. That this was wrong ... I don't think people are ready for this."

We're about to find out. "United 93" is the first feature film to deal explicitly with the events of September 11, 2001, and is certain to ignite an emotional debate before and after it opens on April 28. Is it too soon? Should the film have been made at all? More to the point, will anyone want to see it? Other 9/11 projects are on the way as the fifth anniversary of the attacks approaches, most notably Oliver Stone's "World Trade Center," starring Nicolas Cage, opening Aug. 9. But as the harbinger, "United 93" will take most of the heat, whether it deserves it or not.

The real United 93 crashed in a Pennsylvania field after 40 passengers and crew fought back against the terrorists who had hijacked the plane. Writer-director Paul Greengrass ("The Bourne Supremacy") has gone to great lengths to be respectful in his depiction of what occurred, proceeding with the film only after securing the approval of every victim's family. "Was I surprised at the unanimity? Yes. Very. Usually there are one or two families who are more reluctant," Greengrass writes in an e-mail. "I was surprised and humbled at the extraordinary way the United 93 families have welcomed us into their lives and shared their experiences with us." His team's research was meticulous. "They even went so far as to ask what my mother had been wearing on the plane," says Carole O'Hare, whose 79-year-old mother, Hilda Marcin, died on the flight. "They were very open and honest with us, and they made us a part of this whole project." Universal, which is releasing the film, plans to donate 10 percent of its opening weekend gross to the Flight 93 National Memorial Fund. That hasn't stopped criticism that the studio is exploiting a national tragedy. O'Hare thinks that's unfair. "This story has to be told to honor the passengers and crew for what they did," she says. "But more than that, it raises awareness. Our ports aren't secure. Our borders aren't secure. Our airlines still aren't secure, and this is what happens when you're not secure. That's the message I want people to hear."

It's unclear whether Americans will pay $9.50 to hear it. The A&E cable movie "Flight 93" drew 5.9 million viewers in January, the highest-rated show in the channel's history. But movies are different. "I don't want anyone to go who doesn't want to have this experience," says Adam Fogelson, Universal's president of marketing. "But when I see what's on screen, I feel comfortable that a lot of people will." Audiences seem to be split on the issue. "I don't think that's a movie I really want to see," says Jackie Alvarez, 73, of San Ramon, Calif., after seeing the trailer. "It gave me the creeps. It's way too soon." But 17-year-old Antoine Richardson of Memphis, Tenn., is looking forward to it. "I don't think it's exploitative or too soon," he says. "It helps us remember." As if any of us could forget.

i don`t see how it could be better than a&e`s movie on the subject...it was amazing,imo.....

i`ll disagree,ar...respectfully...i think that many will see it....i hope they will...

it seems that the media`s forgotten...that the folks on that flight were heros...they saved many other lives by bringing that plane down....

the family`s of those people should be extremely proud...and their names should be known....and revered...

what they did should make other americans proud..

i can understand why the families are o.k. with the movie...

and i`m not surprised that the reaction in new york(new york can be cut a little slack..that`s understandable) and hollywood were negative...par for the course...

Forgotten? What exactly would you have the media do? Do a weekly piece about that flight every week 4 1/2 years after 9/11?

Maybe do an in-depth profile every day on each of the passengers on the flight and just start over when you get to the end of the list? Repeat for 20 years.

Are the NYC firefighters and policemen also 'forgotten' by the media?

Aside from media-bashing being a religion of sorts to you, I don't see what media coverage of 9/11 4 1/2 later has to do with politics or relgion.

i just think it's too early for this type of movie....

o.k.,kosar..jack,feel free to move this if you want...i apologize in advance...

kosar...why would it bug you that someone might make a film about the heroism of those folks on flight 93?.....one film...in almost 5 years...

this would be the first theatrical release..in 4.5 years...of a movie on this subject...the a& e movie being the only other that i`m aware of....

or the heroism of the police and firemen involved in 9/11?...

that`s offensive?

with the family`s blessing,btw...

what`s the timeframe on making such a film,bud?...do we have to get your o.k.?

did you give the n.y.times the o.k. to run abu gharaib photos and articles ad infinitum?

what`s the rub?....why wouldn`t americans want to see this?...if the family`s are on board?...

hop over to the politics forum and and check the thread on nbc sending muslims in full regalia into a nascar event to try and film american racism at it`s finest

agenda driven, self hating tripe...it`s all over the media...

yeah..i`m sick of the left wing media and hollywood pissing on america...and the west...as they sit in their mansions and cushy offices passing judgement on the great unwashed...

and yeah,i`m happy to see these heros get their due...

i`d like to see more of it....

you don`t like it?...just pick up a copy of the n.y.times..... rent syriana or munich....and go home and close the drapes...

doubt if I would see it since hollywood is involed they seem to distort things somewhat. the a&e one will be hard to surpass for sure.

speaking of flights that turned into disasters i watched a documentation on korean flight 007 that the soviets shot down in 1983 i believe. talk about a cover up. not only the soviets but it seems the u.s. may have been involved in the cover up also which they deny of course.

tease..it makes you wonder...that flight that broke apart a few years ago...and fell into a belle harbour n.y. neighborhood.....i think it was late 2001....

i always wondered about that...right after 9/11.....

they rushed to say that no terrorism was involved...and that`s probably true...but,it would have been in the administration`s best interests for that to not have been terroism related...

we live in dangerous times...true dat`...

Why would the A/E one be OK and this one not? Is A/E not Hollywood? Did they screen all actors to make sure there were no liberal ones for that movie?

gw while i do not speaks volumes on our govt. as some do here i do wonder many times about things that occur and why they happened when many times it seems they could have been prevented. human error and idoitic decisions continue to plague our govt. even though theses people are supposed to be some of the brightest people in our eyes. sometimes i think my 11 year old could run this country better than one from both parties.

while my opinion on iraq differs from many, i feel that many mistakes have been made and continue to made by both parties on this subject. at this point and time i cannot support any ticket on the upcoming ballot. i will do as i did 12 years ago and vote for myself on a write in ballot.

years from now the truth will come of on many events that have occured and am sure all of us will be shocked by the events that took place and the ill fated decisions made. only time will tell for sure.

WTF are you ranting about? I never said that I didn't like that this movie is coming out. In fact, I will definitely go see it. AR is the one who doesn't
like it coming out now.

kosar...why would it bug you that someone might make a film about the heroism of those folks on flight 93?.....

Are you just making things up now? Please show something that indicates that the release of this movie 'bugs' me.

I'm glad it's coming out. I'm glad the other ones are coming out. Man.

I was just curious about your comment that the media has 'forgotten.' IOW, what could they do to placate you? Write random articles about Flight 93 every 2 or 3 weeks? Jeez.

So by extension, you must feel that the media, both left and right, have forgotten about the firefighters. cops, rescue workers, hospital workers, people that died at the pentagon, everybody who died in the towers. Hell, the OK City victims.

A&E had their thing and now 2 or three movies are coming out. Yet you, once again, whine about the media.

If your sprawling posts are supposed to revolve around a premise with the intent of poking holes in the premise (in this case, that i'm against this movie), at the very least get the premise correct and don't just make one up out of thin air.

fan....you could say that about the old audie murphy war movies...

or the longest day...pearl harbor...pork chop hill...even a fictional poseidon adventure...

all about heroism and suffering(some real, some fictional)....9/11 isn`t much different than pearl harbor...i`m sure many civilians died at pearl harbor..

only this time it wasn`t about a nation state attacking us...

the japanese had a grievance against us...(our naval blockades among other things)..just as radical islamists have their supposed grievances...

we can agree to disagree..i just don`t get the reticence in showing a movie about heroism and the selfless sacrifice of americans to save their fellow citizens...

but, that`s just me...if it were one of my own,i`d want the story to be remembered...

I saw the A/E one, and I agree - it was excellent. ...But isn't A/E part of "Hollywood" too? I'm just not getting the difference there.

Actually, very very few civilians were killed in Pearl Harbor. As bad as that attack was (believe me, I 'm in no way downplaying or justifying anything), at least the Japanese only went after military targets. They left civilians untouched to the best of their ability.
