Developed at the University of Iowa, used by several states in rating students against the national average.

KC... can you ask her another question for me.....LOL

for the 5th graders tests, how do they come up with the IGE and NGE scores??? can't possibly be realistic for what it appears to mean.

Your right, it is almost never realistic. Example: 5th grader gets tested after 3 months, IGE. The NGE might have been tested after 5 months or whatever.

It is unrealistic to compare the two, as it would depend on the student's school, how far along they are in teaching what is needed to make a fair comparison.

Need anything else, I'll ask Annie.

see what i mean here, KC.... ain't no way a 5th grader is gonna be considered at a 13+ grade level in math..... there is such higher math to learn that they haven't even learned yet.... so how in the world do they reach these NGE's??

oh boy, I remember taking those standardized tests and seeing where you score on the curve and sh*t every year in school

I was the same way with my math scores like yer kid mama. I swear, its grossly skewed when you are at the very top and bottom tiers.
It's a great tool to see where you are at, but I wouldnt put much stock in where it shows what "level" you are at. In my opinion it shows your levels of reasoning, comprehension, recall, and understanding and thought process. So yer boy is at a HS grad level of "understanding and figuring things out" rather than 13th grade equivalent math courses.... get what I mean? tuff to type what I mean.

Dont put no stock in it... I used to score up in the upper tiers every year on those kinda test and I was routinely the dumbest jack@ss in my class.

exactly marine......it's GOTTA be skewed!!! granted, i know he has a great math mind (not unlike mamma) ;) but when they can put on a report that they are beyond grade k-`1-12 level, i don't get it..... in 5th grade, they haven't begun to see advanced geometry, trigonometry, calculus.....etc....... i don't doubt he will excel when he gets there.....but how in the hell can they call it that grade level when the courses haven't even been seen yet??? i'm dying to talk to his teachers on Monday, to ask where in the heck this crap comes from!!! SHEESH!!! but yes, your explanation makes MUCH sense.... kinda like an IQ score, rather than a grade equivelancy score!!!

My wife says that is entirely possible. Your son answered some questions/problems correctly that normally doesn't happen.

Every part of the test has things to answer that are several grade levels above the student's actual grade.

You have a smart son, the potential to excel in that area, or just got lucky - we'll go with the first two, ok?

Just read marine's thread, that was a better answer and agree it is kind of hard to explain.

Now, please don't ask about "no child left behind". My wife will be on here writing a book about how ridiculous that program has been since the beginning.

LOL, okay KC, thanks :) ....... if we go with the first two, we also have to go with immaculate conception, cuz his daddy had to have had that kind of mind when his momma didn't!!!! ;) (and well, from what any of you around here know about my ex ------- he didn't get a math brain from HIM either. He swore from the day he took the tests that they were really easy tho, so i don't think guessiing was on option. WOW, cool, a math brainy and a left handed pitching child.... what more could mom ask for? ;)

KC, i'd love to see her explanation of the "no child left behind" thing, but also agree it is the most rediculous thing i've ever heard of in the public school systems!!!

yea... there are a few of those "above tough" questions on those tests. If he got lucky and answered them all right, or he could figure them out by reasoning with them... it just shows you that he has the same ability as a 13th grade to comprehend things at his level, or that he will be able to comprehend them when he gets there. something like that.

best way to look at it, if he keeps up at his current pace and doesn't go to pot he will be a good kid.

Looking around my neighborhood, I can make a few strong cases that my dog has the same reasoning abilities as some of the high schoolers here.
