Have a good friend who is playing for the Salem Avalanche this year. I was really surprised that he is in single A again this year in the Astros system. He was MVP of the New York Penn League last year with the Tri City Valley Cats. Currently he is leading the Avalanche with a .533 BA.

Here are his YTD stats: Neil Sellars

Salem Avalanche stats

I'm hoping to get over there sometime this year to check him out.

And, by the way, can someone please explain how minor league baseball works to me? I was told that this was a two league promotion by someone, but I don't understand. How can a single A league be two steps higher than another single A league?

From what I understand below A there are various "below A" leagues, the NYP being one of them. Minor league ball is usually pretty fun to go watch, used to do it in NH and go to 3 or 4 games a year down here.

I saw him play numerous times last summer . I live 5 minutes from where his home games were at HVCC. But acehist is right it is below A ball. Roger Clemens' son played with him last summer and Clemens came to a few games. Sellars was the best player on the team.

Thanks for the input guys. I also see that the Carolina league is listed as "A Advanced". What does that mean?

Neil's a great ball player, but I have no clue as to what it takes to make it to the bigs. His natural position is at third, but they have moved him to second. I think it is somewhat a waste of his arm, but if he wants to play in the bigs for the Astros, then he will certainly have to move off of third.

Also, is the Salem Avalanche team (A Advanced) higher or lower the Lexington Legends (Class A)? I will assume so, but like I said I really don't understand.
