Dick Cheney (1992):

"I would guess if we had gone in there, I would still have forces in Baghdad today. We'd be running the country. We would not have been able to get everybody out and bring everybody home.

And the final point that I think needs to be made is this question of casualties. I don't think you could have done all of that without significant additional U.S. casualties. And while everybody was tremendously impressed with the low cost of the (1991) conflict, for the 146 Americans who were killed in action and for their families, it wasn't a cheap war.

And the question in my mind is how many additional American casualties is Saddam (Hussein) worth? And the answer is not that damned many. So, I think we got it right, both when we decided to expel him from Kuwait, but also when the president made the decision that we'd achieved our objectives and we were not going to go get bogged down in the problems of trying to take over and govern Iraq."

Bush 41, explaining why he didn't go to Baghdad in 1991:

"We're going to be an occupying power -- America in an Arab land -- with no allies at our side. It would have been disastrous."

I thought you told my boy Wayne that "quotes from 12 years ago arent relevant anymore" I agree w/you the war is horrible and groundless and I'm not going to debate that, but bringing back 15 yr old quotes doesnt solve a whole lot since it's '06

If a quote is prescient and instructive (or should have been) then it's relevant.

Stray quotes about someone maybe supporting a 50 cent tax that wasn't voted on 13 years ago has no bearing on anything current.

I would just like to know what changed so much in the time between Cheneys quote and 2003 in regards to an occupation.

Come on, now someone can throw out '9/11 happened.' That's usually a nice catch-all when explaining away this admins missteps.

LOL well it isnt like 9-11 was a minor disturbance, so that is a legit excuse to 'explain away' alot of the admin's missteps, I admit I dont follow it a whole lot though, but I was 20 miles away from 9/11 and it hit home as dozens died from my town alone, and it shook up the center of the world, ny, and therefore the country, for a helluva long time, no it doesnt explain away everything such as the current atoricous war situation, but for a few years it was the reason for a lot of the problems as you cant underestimate how big of a mess that was to clean up literally and figuratively

I'm not downplaying 9/11, but the usual suspects can usually be counted on to explain how the destruction, occupation and reconstruction of Iraq is necessary because of 9/11 when in fact it's left us much more vulnerable to the same elements that were responsible for 9/11.

Maybe Kosar just felt like being an alter ego of Manson. Instead of a Kerry quote from 92 promoting the overthrow of Saddam, he brings out a Cheney quote against it. It's like a yin yang thing or something.

....How did Cheney get so much more stupid 11 years later?

Cheney should have retired after his first two opinions stretching the truth. Making a story fit your needs to go to war is sick.

Are you mocking my youth spent in and around Blacksburg? ....How the hell did you know? Seriously, I was born of Hokie parents but thankfully found the better coast. ...Blacksburg's aiiight - it's Floyd County you gotta look out for - either Deliverance candidates or hippies - it's a no win situation.

I like your inventsion. You should do very well with "Garden Weasel'sl Pik Nit Polyester Blends".

Oh, I just thought that it was interesting the clarity of reason regarding Iraq that Cheney had in 1991. Just kind of wondered what changed.

We had 4x the number of troops there than we currently have, we knew for a fact that he had WMD in 1991, yet there were still reasons compelling enough for Cheney to agree with not going to Baghdad. What happened?

lol- and yeah, this board is bombarded with every sort of quote from 10 years ago by Wayne and Manson and a few others, but no comment from you, ever.

No comment from you about Waynes endless non-sequitur posts about Clinton.

But I post one showing that Cheney knew exactly how this would go, based on his previous comments, and you come out of the woodwork.

I can't help but think that your definition of 'relevant' is like a shifting wind, depending on whose post it is.

Kosar's right though - you'd get more credit with commies like him if you'd battle the Mansonettes more often instead of doing this shifting wind thing. :nono:
