LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Mark Sanchez, Southern California's backup quarterback, was arrested Wednesday after being accused of sexually assaulting a female student, police said.

Sanchez, 19, was arrested around 4 p.m. just north of campus and was being booked for investigation of sexual assault, police Officer Jason Lee said.

"The alleged assault occurred earlier today," Lee said. The USC student reported it to police but no other details were immediately available.

A spokesman for USC said the university will release a statement later Wednesday.

Sanchez is listed on the Trojans' depth chart as the backup to John David Booty, but is expected to battle for the starting job this fall. Booty practiced only once this spring before he injured his back and had to undergo surgery.

Sanchez played the recent spring scrimmage and has been practicing with the first unit.

He will be a redshirt freshman this coming season

University of Sex Criminals...well, Petey is all about the business of winning football games, eh.

Trojan man.....

Just last week Utah State's QB jerod Walker was kicked off the team for drug usage and later charged w/ sex assault.

He was gonna compete w/ Leon Jackson for the starting position. He played in a backup role till the end of the year when injury knocked out-of-Action Jackson. Walker did well and I figured him to take over the job at some point during this upcoming season.

USU's Walker :sadwave:

I agree. I'm a Notre Dame supporter, but I'm not going to try and bash USC for all the recent press. Are some of these kids criminals? No doubt about it. Are there these types of players at every college playing sports getting full rides? You bet.

The fact is, if you support college football, this is the kind of thing you simply have to expect sooner or later to happen to the team you support. When your team has had the success that USC has experienced recently, you can expect it to get heavy national attention and scrutiny.

More controversy for USC as looks into Jarrett's rent payments
May 1, 2006
CBS SportsLine.com wire reports

LOS ANGELES -- Southern California officials are investigating whether an upscale apartment that wide receiver Dwayne Jarrett shared with former teammate Matt Leinart violated NCAA rules, according to a published report Sunday.

Leinart's father, Bob, put the duo on the lease at the secured apartment complex downtown after Leinart moved out of his former residence near campus because he was constantly hounded by fans.

Leinart -- the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback picked 10th by the Arizona Cardinals in the NFL Draft Saturday -- and Jarrett each paid $650 a month for the apartment that cost $3,866 a month, according to the Los Angeles Times. Leinart's father paid the difference and said he's been told Jarrett might have to repay him about $10,000, the newspaper reported.

University compliance officials are looking into whether the football program received an unfair advantage. While Bob Leinart would have been allowed to make up the difference for his son, he might not have been allowed to do so for another player.

Tim Tessalone, USC's director of sports information, confirmed Sunday that an investigation involving Jarrett's living arrangement was under way.
"At this point, we're still gathering information," Tessalone told the Associated Press, declining further comment.

The investigation is the latest cloud over the Trojans' football program. The Pac-10 is looking into the living arrangement of 2005 Heisman winner Reggie Bush's family, who lived in a house owned by a man who reportedly sought to market him while he played for USC last season. NCAA rules prohibit student-athletes and their families from receiving extra benefits from agents or their representatives.

The police is continuing its investigation into a female student's accusation that backup quarterback Mark Sanchez sexually assaulted her. Sanchez was freed last week after posting $200,000 bail. He was due back in court on May 17.
