The A's hadn't yet announced who would start Tuesday's game against the Los Angeles Angels, and Thursday's starter against the Cleveland Indians also could a mystery.
"Top secret," manager Ken Macha said.
He later said Tuesday's starter would likely be Brad Halsey, whose last regular-season start was Aug. 30 against San Diego, when he was a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Halsey, acquired for reliever Juan Cruz in late March, is 0-0 with a 1.42 ERA in nine appearances for the A's this season.
Halsey will replace Rich Harden, who was placed on the disabled list Friday with a strained right back muscle. Kirk Saarloos was another option to start the game, but he pitched the ninth inning during Sunday's 13-6 win over the Kansas City Royals.
Esteban Loaiza is scheduled to start Thursday, but after he allowed five runs in just one inning Saturday, the A's will discuss his situation today.
Macha spoke with general manager Billy Beane Sunday morning and they plan to meet before tonight's game against the Angels.
They'll discuss the state of the pitching staff, and the talks surely will center on the struggling Loaiza.
"To me, to be a successful starter you have to go six or seven innings," Macha said. "That's basically why we signed him, to go out and pitch seven innings. It's not happening. We have to figure out how to get that out of him."
Loaiza allowed five runs in just one inning during Saturday's rainout against the Royals. Had the game been official, Loaiza would have a 10.24 ERA in five starts. Instead, he's 0-3 with an 8.35 ERA.
The A's could put Loaiza, who left last Sunday's game with a strained left trapezius muscle, on the disabled list if they chose to do so.
Injury news
Right fielder Milton Bradley missed his fourth straight game with a right knee strain. Bradley also developed a problem in his right hip while taking batting practice Saturday. The A's aren't considering placing him on the disabled list at this point.
Trainer Larry Davis said Bradley could return during the two-game series in Anaheim.
Closer Huston Street missed his 11th straight game with a strained right pectoral muscle. Street threw off the bullpen mound before Sunday's game.
"We're hopeful," Street said. "It's all about how my arm reacts. I tried to do as much as I can. We'll see if there's any soreness tomorrow."
