Mailbag: Still hope for the season
Cubs beat writer Carrie Muskat answers fans' questions

I know we're only about a month into the season, but the Cubs are falling out of the race fast. Could we see a trade soon?
-- Jonathan F., Nashville, Tenn.
Teams aren't going to part with top caliber players this early in the year. It may look grim, but last year, the Houston Astros were 18-32 on May 30, yet rallied with a 16-9 June and reached the World Series. It's a cliche, but the baseball season is a marathon, not a sprint.
What is wrong with Mark Prior? First, he has the flu and then, food poisoning. Are the Cubs running out of excuses on why it's taking so long for him to recover? He has a strained muscle, not a torn muscle. Why is it taking so long for him to get healthy? He is 25, not 52. Is there a bigger problem here?

Prior's bouts with the flu and food poisoning were not excuses. Those things happened. As to why it's taking so long, the only answer I have is that the Cubs want him to be 100 percent healthy with no chance of setbacks or reinjuring himself when he does return.
I've noticed that players such as Juan Pierre always wear their socks up, but this season, Todd Walker seems to change the way he wears them day to day. I was wondering if this was a superstitious thing with Walker.

There's no rhyme or reason for Walker's dress code. "It's a feel," he said. If he goes 4-for-4 with his socks up, they'll be up again the next game. If he has a bad game, he might change and drop his pants legs.
I don't like to get into coulda, woulda, shoulda's, but wouldn't Nomar Garciaparra's .360 average and 21 RBIs look nice right now? :142smilie :142smilie :142smilie

Yes, he would look good in the Cubs lineup, but would Garciaparra have been happy sitting on the bench for the first month of the season? Garciaparra is playing first base for the Dodgers. No one could've predicted Derrek Lee would get hurt.
I have a daughter whose name is Addison Grace (named after Addison Street and Mark Grace). With a second child on the way, any ideas on names so I can stick with the Wrigley/Cubby theme? My wife has already tossed out "Clark" and "Ivy."

Actor/comedian Bill Murray named his son Homer Banks. Don't know if Sheffield or Maddux are options. Does your wife like "Ernie?"
