The surprise was still evident on Monday, even though record-setting UAB quarterback Darrell Hackney had a night to reflect on not getting picked in the NFL Draft.
But he's still prepared to chase his NFL dream after signing a free agent contract Monday with the Cleveland Browns.
"Things didn't pan out the way I wanted them to but, hey, there is still light at the end of the tunnel," Hackney said.
For Hackney, that light is coming from Cleveland, where he'll be Thursday to participate in a rookie camp with the Browns.
Hackney said the weekend camp should give him a good feel on what to expect from the Browns organization.
"I'm just happy to get an opportunity," Hackney said. "I haven't really been looking for answers. I've just been soaking everything in. It really hasn't hit me yet."
Hackney knew that his height - a shade under six feet - concerned some teams. but he thought he fit into the draft somewhere. He said "at least five teams" called during the fifth round to let him know of their interest.
Hackney said the group included the San Diego Chargers, Houston Texans and Atlanta Falcons. The Atlanta native said his hometown team informed his agent it didn't plan on picking any quarterbacks and were interested in bringing in Hackney as a free agent. But the Falcons picked Georgia's D.J. Shockley in the seventh round.
"They all told me to keep my ears and eyes open," Hackney said. "It came down to the end (of seven rounds) and I'm still sitting here."
Twelve quarterbacks were selected in the two-day draft with five selected on Sunday. Shockley, who was chosen with the 223nd pick, was the final quarterback taken.
Hackney said the Browns' situation turned out the best for finding a spot on an NFL roster. Cleveland has four quarterbacks - Trent Dilfer, Charlie Frye, Derek Anderson and Lang Campbell. Southern Miss quarterback Dustin Almond is also expected to sign with Cleveland.
