Ticker) - The Chicago White Sox will have to make due without the hottest pitcher in baseball - Jose Contreras - for a while.

The defending champions on Tuesday placed Contreras on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 5, with sciatica, irritation of the sciatic nerve.

The 34-year-old Contreras is 5-0 with an American League-leading 1.41 ERA in six starts this season, extending his major league best winning streak to 13 games.

The American League Pitcher of the Month for April, Contreras has gone 13-0 with a 1.80 ERA in his last 14 regular-season starts. He was 3-1 with a 3.09 ERA in four postseason starts in 2005.

A corresponding move is expected to be made on Wednesday.

He did this in between start workouts of some sort.

Some young knuckle baller starting with an H is suppose to be called up. McCarthy will stay in the pen.

RHP Charles Haeger will be called up to make Wednesday's start.

Charlie Haeger, 23, has dominated the international league this season (AAA), posting a .68 ERA in his six starts (3-0). Haeger did face major leaguers? during spring training. His most recent stint against big leaguers was when the Sox played Atlanta in the final pre-season series, where Haeger pitched brilliantly.

Best known for his dancing knuckler, Haeger also features a mid to upper 80?s fastball and a little used slider. The organization is high on Haeger and he will be pitching on 5 days rest on Wednesday.

It is unclear who will catch Haeger on the Sox, but with Bard?s recent struggles in Boston (catching Tim Wakefield), we should expect at least a few passed balls on Wednesday.
