dogs that bark:

i didn't mean for this to become a debate about war and dying but your direct respose to my input on favorite athletes touched a nerve. Of course 2/3rds of those serving in combat arenas are volunteers considrering the Air Force, Navy and Marines are all voluntary. Also consider that so many volunteerd to go Direct Army as opposed to Draft to gain an MOS (Militaty Occumpational Speciaty) to avoid combat. Consider aigain that the permanent members of the Armed Forces (lifers they were called) were also from lower economic groups that saw the military as relief. These are also included in your "volunteer" numbers. Concentrate on the 55,000 on "The Wall". Your skewed statistics will reveal a different piciture. Less than 10% of those seved actually face combat direct support and the balance are those you speak of having "volunteered". Numbers and percentages can be read to achieve any position. I stand by what I said . More poor and lower middle class died simpy because they could not afford to avoid the draft during '65-'70 in Viet Nam. The same goes on today. Wars are fougnt by the less foruntate members of our society. I won't respond further as it could go on 'ad infanitum'' I am sure with others contributing.

toma....

imo ali was the greatest boxer of all time.....

the first ali/frazier fight was the best match that i have ever seen.....

but i don't consider ali to be a classy athlete....

only because he publicly embarrassed some of his opponents before he fought them....

when he likened frazier to a gorilla i thought it was very un-classy move...from what i have read it had bothered frazier years after their fights....

and i understand the promotion aspect of it...

so to me a classy athlete is somebody that respects his opponent

We certainly have diff of opinions on definition of class act.

I'll take Walter Payton as my nominee for class act.

Myth: Most Vietnam veterans were drafted.
2/3 of the men who served in Vietnam were volunteers. 2/3 of the men who served in World War II were

Myth: The war was fought largely by the poor and uneducated.
Servicemen who went to Vietnam from well-to-do areas had a slightly elevated risk of dying because they were more likely to be pilots or infantry officers.

Vietnam Veterans were the best educated forces our nation had ever sent into combat. 79% had a high school education or better. (McCaffrey Papers)

I'll second that emotion :)

Practice? are you not remembering practice? How can you put this guy as your fav. when he is a cancer in the locker room and annually becomes one of the worst teamates in the Assoc.

"ON THE BASIS OF GAME PLAY" is what my post says. Also, his antics are over-reported and many are bs.
