Mexican food fav's for me in Houston:

Lupe Tortillas (best fajitas in town IMO)
Red Onion (more South American)
Americas (South American)
Cafe Adobe
http://www.caferedonion.com/
http://restauranteur.com/americas/index.htm
http://restauranteur.com/cafeadobe/
http://www.lupetortilla.com/

-- another place Pico De Gallo is really good and you get homeade stuff....it is in Sugarland and also the fav. of the mayor of Sugarland (who will soon be famous as the successor of Rep. DeLay)

cheap, family place: Gringo's (food is very good and cheap 6-8$)
http://www.commshout.com/stafford/gringos_mexican_kitchen/

activities for kids: museum district has good museums, including children's museum although i never have been here i hear it is fun for them

also i would go to Schlitterbaun in New Braunfels (north of San Antonio) if you get a chance, and if not there try the one in Galveston which has just opened -- they are waterparks and very top of the line water parks at that
http://www.schlitterbahn.com/default.htm

as far as a steakhouse, there are plenty, but i would eat mexican food as you can get a good steak anywhere....i could eat at Red Onion or Americas for a week in a row -- plenty of options and you can get a good piece of meat there with some South American flavor that i doubt you can get at home

If you want Mexican food don't go to Texas..................its all Texican food............far from authentic. Depending on where you are staying their is a Six Flags and Hurricane Harbor for the kids right by the park..(Texas Rangers) or you can drop them off on Harry Hines Blvd. and haul ass. The best Texican food might be Abuelos or Uncle Julios, I don't really know...............I mean Fajitas are fajitas and I know you can't get them in Mexico, but don't tell that to the locals, they are considered to be authentic Mexican dish here. Of course so are Jalapeno poppers, and melted velveeta with salsa in it.
Now if you want real authentic MEXICANS cooking your food .........then you have to go to a chinese restaurant

This is a solid list of "Mexican" restaurants in Houston although I think I would have to add Pappasitos and El Patio. Lupe Tortillas in my personal favorite.

Seeing how I live and Dallas and Lived in Houston for 30 years. I'll chime in with my War and Peace.

Mexican food is better in Houston. Still trying to find something that compares in Dallas. Dr Freeze is pretty much on with the Lupe Tortillas fajitas being the best ever invented. Red Onion is also retarded good and for my money better than Americas if your into South American. I'm not a big Cafe Adobe fan and don't go to the one on Westheimer on Monday or your likely to have to explain a lot of things to your kids in the same sex mating education area. Can't go wrong with Pappasitos (Dallas or Houston) very very good but somewhat pricey for Mexican. If you have kids stay out of El Patio at all costs as the food is marginal at best, and once again the kids are likely to see things they shouldn't after the everclear margaritas start flowing out of "club no minor". If it's a week night El Tiempo on Richmond has really good food, but the bar crowd will probably be too much on Friday or Saturday.

As for Dallas, Probably just go to Pappasitos or there is a new place called Manny's that is real good, but can get pretty crowded. If your stuck their are 15 Mi Cocinas that are decent, and if you want South American Gloria's is okay. If you want high end authentic Mexican Javiers is very good but is stupid expensive and you may need a reservation.

On to steaks. Both Dallas and Houston have good steaks, and you can pay whatever you want. I can name 10 places in each city that have great steaks, but are high end and less kid friendly. If you've never been I'd recommend Fogo de Chao in either city, but be prepared to get the meat sweats as it's an all you can eat Brazilian Churrascaria, but oh how good. If not, in Houston I'd go to Taste of Texas as it's as good as any high end restaurant and is alot more laid back and family friendly. In Dallas you can't go wrong with Bob's Steak and Chop house, Del Frisco's, Nick and Sams, or Kirby's (but all are very high end).

If while in Houston you decide to taste some Texas style BBQ brisket for lunch or something, try either Goode Company on Kirby, Otto's on Memorial, or Luling City Market on Richmond. All 3 places have greate food.

As far as attractions for the kids I'll probably should pass on this one, but in Dallas (arlington actually) you have Six Flags, and the Aquarium in downtown is pretty cool.

So basically. I'd definitely Go to Lupe Tortillas and order the beef fajitas in Houston. If you've never had all you can eat Brazillian churascaria eat at Fogo (wife will like the Salad bar). Other than that any thing in the list above is good. If you want get my email from Jack and I can give you other suggestions. I'll also be at the June 30th game. I'll be the dumb ass in the Bob Knepper jersey.

To echo Yak, like I've told anyone else going to Dallas before this, if you have the chance, Fogo de Chao in Addison (north Dallas burb). Best resturant I've ever been to.

As for the kids, I also agree with him on the aquarium. When my old roomate's nieces and nephews were in town, we went there, and it was pretty cool.

Agreed, Red Onion is perhaps my favorite restaurant of all time

The Tres Leches at Americas puts it on par with Red Onion, but Americas is about 2* the money

For Mexican food in Dallas, Herrera's on Maple Ave (the original). Period.

The place is a ****ing institution. Family run dive that has been around for decades (had a layout in National Geographic 10 years ago or so.). Cheap and bonus, BYOBeer

Agree on the Dallas World Aquarium, kids love it. Herrera's is about 10 minutes away (warning, they are closed on Tuesdays).

Steve,

Is that not the craziest thing you have ever seen?

A Taste of Asia just opened up down the road on North Beach and someone told me they had really good food. So I ordered some for pick up, because I don't like to be away from the porn channels for too long, and when I got there the owner was the only asian in the joint. The rest of them were just a bunch of mexicans wearing bandanas trying to look asian.

Perhaps I should have been more specific in recommending El Patio as I think they serve the best cheese enchiladas in the city. BTW, Club No Minor is no longer the hot spot that it used to be and the restaurant is quite family friendly.

Good to know. Place was a zoo when we used to frequent it. I'm a big fan of cheese enchiladas, Original Doneraki on Fulton has my favorite. problem is they make me sleep for about a week after I have them.
