BOSTON: LF Manny Ramirez argued with home plate umpire Larry Vanover after a called third strike in the second inning, but quickly calmed down. Ramirez entered the game with a .327 career average against Kenny Rogers, the only Boston player that has hit over .300 against Rogers with more than three at-bats ... DH David Ortiz, a big NBA fan, was pleasantly surprised to hear that the Detroit Pistons have been using Boston's comeback against the Yankees in the 2004 ALCS as inspiration while they try to overcome a 3-1 deficit against Miami in the Eastern Conference finals. "That's really cool," he said. "They are a great team, so it's cool that they are using what we did to believe that they can come back."

DETROIT: RHP Jeremy Bonderman's wife Amber gave birth to their first child, Mailee Blaize, on Thursday. "I wanted her to get here in time for Father's Day, so that I can get a gift," he said Friday. ... RHP Mike Maroth underwent successful arthroscopic elbow surgery in Los Angeles on Friday. Maroth, who had bone chips removed from his pitching elbow, is expected to miss 2-3 months. ... Many of the Tigers planned to keep a close eye on Friday's Game 6 of the NBA's Eastern Conference finals between the Pistons and Miami. While most of the Tigers are Pistons fans, C Ivan Rodriguez is an exception. "I love the Pistons -- those guys are my friends -- but they are playing against my team. I'm a Miami guy," he said.

Angels-Indians

LOS ANGELES: RHP Bartolo Colon (shoulder inflammation) is scheduled to make his second minor league rehab start Tuesday at Triple-A Salt Lake City. "We'll evaluate him after that," manager Mike Scioscia said. On Thursday night, Colon pitched four scoreless innings, allowing two hits, striking out three and walking one for Class-A Rancho Cucamonga. "He touched 93 (mph), had good command and finished strong," Scioscia said. Colon, last year's AL Cy Young Award winner, is 0-2 with a 7.07 ERA in three starts. ... Darin Erstad (bone bruise in right ankle) was due to start a rehab assignment as the DH at Rancho Cucamonga on Friday night. If there are no setbacks, he will join Salt Lake City on Saturday and rejoin the Angels next week.

CLEVELAND: First a candy bar, now an imaginary city. Pronkmania is running wild. Travis Hafner's catchy nickname has spawned a new creation: "Pronkville," a mezzanine section in right field of Jacobs Field where Cleveland's DH has launched some of his longest home runs. The Indians will officially dedicate "Pronkville" next Wednesday for a game against Oakland, and give all fans who purchase tickets in the section free black "Pronkville 48" T-shirts. "It's cool," Hafner said. "I was pretty happy about the T-shirts they made up. They fit into my wardrobe nicely." ... RHP Roger Clemens, who came out of retirement for a third time earlier this week by signing a one-year, $22 million contract with Houston, will make his debut next Tuesday against the Indians' Class-A Lake County affiliate. ... The Indians' No. 9 hitters are batting a major league-best .324 with three homers and 31 RBIs in 53 games. The next highest average in the No. 9 spot belongs to Minnesota (.266).

Yankees-Orioles

NEW YORK: 3B Alex Rodriguez was a late scratch from the starting lineup Friday because of a "stomach disorder," according to a team official. The 2005 AL MVP hasn't missed a game since 2004. It was uncertain if Rodriguez would be available as a pinch hitter. ... Closer Mariano Rivera was unavailable Friday, but he said before the game that his back was showing signs of improvement. The right-hander felt a twinge while reaching for his shoes before Thursday's game at Detroit. "Today I feel real good. Yesterday was painful," he said. Manager Joe Torre didn't expect Rivera to rush back. "I think with how uncomfortable he was," Torre said, "I don't think he's going to try and be a hero." ... RHP Octavio Dotel (elbow surgery) struck out two during a perfect inning in the front end of his first back-to-back outings in extended spring training. He will throw another inning Saturday and could join the Yankees around June 15.

BALTIMORE: LHP Adam Loewen will get his first major league start Saturday against New York. It will be the third big league appearance for the rookie, who was the fourth overall pick in the 2002 amateur draft. "People keep on telling me I'm facing the Yankees," Loewen said Friday. "I don't think I'll lose sleep over it, but I am anxious to get out there and pitch." ... Orioles OF Jay Gibbons hoped to return to the lineup Friday, but hip and knee injuries will probably keep him sidelined for another day or two. ... C Ramon Hernandez batted cleanup Friday night for the first time this season. He replaced Javy Lopez, who had replaced Gibbons.

Blue Jays-Devil Rays

TORONTO: C Bengie Molina, who was hit on the hand by a pitched ball Tuesday, was out of the starting lineup. Manager John Gibbons said Molina could return Saturday. ... INF John McDonald (groin) may take grounders within the next couple days. He has been on the DL since May 27. ... RHP A.J. Burnett (elbow) could pitch a simulated game early next week and start a minor rehabilitation assignment this month.

TAMPA BAY: Manager Joe Maddon expects LHP Casey Fossum (left groin strain) to be ready when eligible to come off the disabled list on June 9. ... RHP Jeff Niemann (shoulder surgery), taken fourth overall in the 2004 draft, will make his third extended spring training start on Tuesday. "This is my spring training," said Niemann, who could join a minor league team within the next two weeks. "Building up strength." ... RHP Wade Townsend (elbow ligament replacement surgery), the Devil Rays' first-round draft pick last year, has added long toss to throwing program.

Rangers-White Sox

TEXAS: Utility player Jerry Hairston Jr. made a big jump in the standings when he was traded Wednesday from the Cubs to the Rangers for IF Phil Nevin, going from near the bottom of the NL Central to the top of the AL West. "Hopefully, this will be a fresh start for me, just get back to playing like I used to and having fun," said Hairston, who was batting .207. ... Manager Buck Showalter said RHP Kevin Millwood, bothered by a stiff back, looked "a little better" Friday and should be ready to start against Kansas City on Tuesday. Millwood was initially scheduled to pitch Sunday. "He's had a stiff back some, but it hasn't bothered him once he got out there and got heated up," Showalter said. "It's just the recovery process has gotten longer each time." ... With five hits, including a home run, in 13 at-bats entering Friday's game, OF Jason Botts is off to a good start -- after going 8-for-27 last season. "Anytime that you have a switch hitter that doesn't have a real definitive downside, it's intriguing about the possibilities," Showalter said. "I'll pick my spots with Jason. There might be some guys I'll keep him away from early on but at some point I'd like to turn him loose if he can handle it."

CHICAGO: DH Jim Thome was scratched from the lineup with a strain in the left quadriceps and adductor area, which he suffered during Thursday's 12-8 loss at Cleveland, but was available to pinch hit. "I'm pretty sure he'll be in the lineup (on Saturday)," manager Ozzie Guillen said. "We don't need him for a couple of days; we need him for another three months." ... After showing promise as a starter last year, RHP Brandon McCarthy is struggling out of the bullpen in his second season. He was 2-2 with a 5.28 ERA in 17 appearances (16 in relief) before Friday's game. "It's tough to adjust to, but I like the fact that I have to learn how to do it," McCarthy said. With two runners on and the White Sox leading Cleveland 8-7 in the seventh on Thursday, McCarthy relieved Matt Thornton and retired the first batter before allowing a three-run homer to Ronnie Belliard, a triple to Aaron Boone and RBI single by Grady Sizemore. "I'll make (a) good pitch, good pitch, good pitch and then one pitch where it's not supposed to be," McCarthy said. ... The White Sox's home game against the Los Angeles Angels that was rained out on May 11 was rescheduled for Aug. 7.

Twins-Athletics

MINNESOTA: LF Jason Kubel showed manager Ron Gardenhire he wasn't comfortable in the leadoff spot, where he has batted three times this season. So Gardenhire put him in at No. 9 on Friday night. "Now he's at the bottom," Gardenhire said. "He doesn't like to lead off a ballgame." Gardenhire didn't want to change the middle of the order because that's where the Twins have been having some success. ... Gardenhire doesn't plan to rest Joe Mauer until he has to -- on the team's day off Monday. "He's been swinging the bat pretty good," Gardenhire said. Mauer entered Friday's game with a career-high 11-game hitting streak. ... Terry Tiffee got the start at DH after being recalled from Triple-A Rochester to take the place of RHP Scott Baker, who was sent to Rochester on Thursday. "We'll put him in there and let him get some swings," Gardenhire said.

OAKLAND: RF Milton Bradley, on the DL since April 27 with a strained muscle in his right side, was scheduled for a rehab outing Saturday as the DH for Triple-A Sacramento. He could be activated as soon as Tuesday in time to play in a three-game series at Cleveland. "I watched him swing," manager Ken Macha said. "He looked pretty darn good." ... RHP reliever Jay Witasick, on the 15-day DL since April 14 with a sprained left ankle, pitched in a rehab assignment for Class-A Stockton. ... RHP Esteban Loaiza, sidelined since April 29 due to a strained muscle in his left side, threw a bullpen session and will pitch another rehab outing for Sacramento on Sunday. He hopes to be activated after Wednesday's game in Cleveland and be available to start Thursday. "I'm doing everything I can to come back," Loaiza said. ... RHP Rich Harden will be on a pitch count of about 80 when he returns from the disabled list to start Sunday after being sidelined since April 27 with a strained lower back. LHP Brad Halsey, who has been in the rotation with Harden and Loaiza out, could be available out of the bullpen Saturday. ... The A's pitching staff did fielding drills before the game.

Royals-Mariners

KANSAS CITY: The Royals entered Friday an encouraging 3-3 on their season-long 10-game road trip through New York, Oakland and Seattle. "The bullpen has done a good job, and we're starting to get key hits," Bell said. "We're still not getting the kind of pitching we need." That has the potential to change this weekend. RHP Jeremy Affeldt is out of the rotation after allowing 10 runs to the Yankees on May 27. RHP Bobby Keppel was making his first career start on Friday, and RHP Seth Etherton was making his second Royals start since he was acquired from San Diego on the same day Etherton got shelled. Etherton allowed one earned run in five innings on Monday while beating Oakland. Plus, Seattle has been shut out seven times, tied with Minnesota for most shutouts in the major leagues. ... After hitting .236 in their first 29 games, the Royals were batting .285 in 22 games entering Friday. That's fifth-best in the AL since May 8.

SEATTLE: 2B Jose Lopez said he is not changing his hitting approach now that he is the new No. 3 hitter. He's been among the AL leaders in RBIs most of the season -- he had 42 entering Friday -- but also led the league with eight sacrifice bunts. He had been batting second behind hitting and stolen base whiz Ichiro Suzuki until this week. "Nothing's different," Lopez said of batting third. "I may still bunt, if the third baseman is playing back, and set up runners for Richie Sexson and guys behind me." Manager Mike Hargrove said he originally had concerns with moving the hot-hitting Lopez, but then Hargrove talked to his third-year starter and impressed upon him to stay the same hitter. Lopez cooled to 4-for-21 on a road trip that ended Wednesday, but Hargrove said Lopez is still hitting the ball sharply. "If I see that he's pressing or trying to do too much with the bat, I'd think about changing it back ... but (the change) very well could last a while. ... The best part of the new lineup to Hargrove is 3B Adrian Beltre batting in Lopez's old second spot, with the pressure to drive in runs lessened. The struggling former No. 5 hitter, with just two home runs and 16 RBIs, went 10-for-26 on the road trip.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Padres-Pirates

SAN DIEGO: LHP Shawn Estes will have reconstructive left elbow surgery June 7 after consulting with three doctors, and will miss the rest of this season and possibly the start of the 2007 season. Estes pitched in only one game with San Diego after signing a $1 million contract. ... RHP Jake Peavy (4-5, 4.15 ERA) will skip his scheduled start Saturday night in Pittsburgh because of right shoulder tendinitis. Mike Thompson (2-1, 3.50 ERA) will start in his place. Peavy is expected to start Tuesday against Milwaukee following eight days of rest.

PITTSBURGH: 3B Joe Randa, out more than a month with a bruised foot, will work out with the Pirates over the weekend and accompany them on a weeklong road trip next week. However, he is not ready to rejoin the 25-man roster, and it has not yet been decided when he will begin a minor league rehabilitation assignment. Freddy Sanchez has replaced Randa as the starter and took an NL-leading .358 average into the weekend. ... LHP Zach Duke tries to follow up his 14-3 victory over Milwaukee on Monday when he starts against the Padres on Saturday night. Duke had lost his previous four decisions. ... The Pirates showed their 1971 World Series Game 7 victory over the Baltimore Orioles in its entirety -- minus commercials -- on the PNC Park scoreboard during a lengthy rain delay Friday night. This season marks the 35th anniversary of that title, one of two won by the Pirates during the 1970s.

Reds-Astros

CINCINNATI: The Reds led the majors in errors (49) and unearned runs (33) heading into Friday's game. 3B Edwin Encarnacion had 13 errors and SS Felipe Lopez had 11 before Friday's game. ... The Reds have extended their player development contract with Chattanooga through the 2008 season. The Lookouts have been a Cincinnati affiliate since 1988. ... Cincinnati has lost five of its last six series after winning eight of its first 12.

HOUSTON: LHP Andy Pettitte says too much is being made about his role in convincing close friend Roger Clemens to return to the Astros. "Everybody makes such a big deal out of it," Pettitte said. "I talk to Roger all the time anyway." But Pettitte admits he's eager as anyone to see how much Clemens performs. "If he comes back and he's healthy and you add him to the rotation, you've probably got a chance to get to the World Series again," Pettitte said. "Am I glad he's back for that reason? Definitely." ... Members of the Houston Texans took turns batting to raise money for charity. K Kris Brown and QB David Carr tied for the team lead with four homers apiece -- each worth $100 for the local boys and girls clubs. ... Max Sapp, a high school prospect from Orlando, Fla., took batting practice as manager Phil Garner and general manager Tim Purpura watched. "Ever since I learned how to walk, I've wanted to be a major-league baseball player," said Sapp. "The next step is to become that." The Astros will look at more prospects on Saturday, preparing for next week's first-year player draft.

Nationals-Brewers

WASHINGTON: The Nationals purchased the contract of LHP Bill Bray from Triple-A New Orleans on Friday. Bray was 4-1 with five saves and a 3.98 ERA in 21 appearances so far this season. When he makes his major league debut, Bray will become the sixth rookie pitcher to start for the Nationals this season. He replaces LHP Joey Eischen on the roster. Eischen was placed on the 60-day disabled list with a muscle tear in his torn left rotator cuff and will likely miss the rest of the season. Team officials said Eischen will have surgery to repair the rotator cuff in the near future.

MILWAUKEE: Prior to Fridays game, the Brewers honored Dennis Biddle, who played in the Negro Leagues in the 1950s, Buck O'Neil, perhaps the best-known of the living Negro Leaguers, and James Sanders, who played in New Orleans, Detroit and Kansas City. The Brewers wore reproductions of uniforms worn by the Milwaukee Bears, the city's 1923 representative in the Negro National League. The Nationals wore uniforms of the Negro National League's Homestead Grays, who played in Washington from 1937-'48.Manager Ned Yost said SS JJ Hardy should be able to return to the lineup in seven to 10 days. Hardy was placed on the 15-day disabled list May 17 with a severe sprain of his right ankle.

CHICAGO: Phil Nevin, acquired on Wednesday from the Rangers, did not play in his first game with his new team. Manager Dusty Baker wants Nevin, a DH in Texas who's listed on the roster as an OF, to get comfortable playing the field again. ... A 7-22 record in May was the team's worst since a 7-18 mark in 1961. The Cubs have had a winning record in June the last two seasons, going 14-13 last year and 15-12 in 2004. ... LHP Sean Marshall made his 11th start, tied with the Pirates' Paul Maholm for the most among rookies. ... The Cubs, allowing a major league-leading 48 stolen bases on the season, had not allowed one in seven straight games. ... ST. LOUIS: Utilityman Scott Spiezio was not at the park due to illness for the second straight game. Manager Tony La Russa fears that Spiezio may have the same type of respiratory illness that sidelined Scott Rolen for nine games earlier in the season. ... SS David Eckstein was in the lineup after getting hit by a pitch on his left wrist on Wednesday. X-rays showed he sustained a bruise. "He's sore, but he's got strength," manager Tony La Russa said. ... La Russa said RF Juan Encarnacion might be the lone regular in the OF while Jim Edmonds, who has a mild to moderate abdominal wall strain, is out. Encarnacion made his first start of the season in CF on Wednesday although So Taguchi started in CF for the fifth time in seven games on Friday. ... The Cardinals have won 14 of 18 series, one of the losses coming in a three-game sweep at Chicago in April.

Marlins-Rockies

FLORIDA: Manager Joe Girardi got teary-eyed over his return to Denver. "It means a lot to come back where ownership was very good to players and fans in this town treated us like kings," said Girardi, who played for the Rockies from 1993-95. "We'd lose 10-1 games and the fans would roar when we scored the run." ... The Marlins purchased the contract of LHP Scott Tankersley from Double-A Carolina and reinstated RHP Carlos Martinez from the DL. Florida designated RHP Todd Wellemeyer and RHP Franklyn German for assignment.

COLORADO: The Rockies activated C Yorvit Torrealba from the 15-day DL and optioned C Miguel Ojeda to Triple-A Colorado Springs. Torrealba strained his throwing shoulder in spring training. ... Manager Clint Hurdle on the Rockies' relief to return to Coors Field from a 10-day trip that saw them fall from first to last in the NL West: "Those would probably be two denominators that would make getting home somewhat more of a warm fuzzy. I'll go with that."

Phillies-Dodgers

PHILADELPHIA: The Phillies recalled LHP Eude Brito from Triple-A Scanton/Wilkes-Barre to start Saturday's game. To make room on the 25-man roster, RHP Gavin Floyd was optioned to Scranton. Floyd allowed seven runs on three homers in a 7-2 loss Thursday. ...
