Oregon State will choose between two sophomores from McMinnville High School for its starting pitcher in tonight's College World Series elimination game against Rice at Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha.
The Beavers, who have won two games since dropping their CWS opener Saturday, must win to stay alive in the series.
Oregon State's two starter options are right-hander Daniel Turpen, who is 2-0 with a 3.42 earned run average and left-hander Joe Paterson, who is 1-0 with a 4.28 ERA.
Turpen pitched two innings of relief in OSU's CWS-opening loss to Miami, facing seven batters and allowing no runs, two walks and striking out one. Paterson last appeared June 4 in OSU's Corvallis Regional win over Hawaii. Paterson allowed one hit and no runs in one inning of relief.
With the season on the line, it's possible that four or more pitchers could take the mound for the Beavers in tonight's game, which is scheduled for 6 p.m. on ESPN2 and KUIK 1360 radio. Top starter Dallas Buck would return to the mound Thursday.
Rice, meanwhile, is starting right-handed junior Craig Crow, who is 8-1 with a 3.28 ERA this season. He has not pitched in this year's CWS.
