I highly doubt most US sports fans could even grasp the fact that the Manchester United Soccer Club is worth more than mythical New York Yankees, in good US Dollars, British Pounds or Euro's no matter how you count it!
I thought a great thing about Soccer is that it isn't as commercial? Yet, value of a team becomes an argument point? You can't have it both ways.
Taco Bell is worth more money than the burrito joint down the block. But which would I chose? Pointless. I honestly don't think anyone in America ever says "Soccer isn't popular or valuable elsewhere in the world."
But so much of the pro-soccer camp quotes how much the rest of the world loves it. But that doesn't seem to have a lot of merit in this type of argument.
I have totally enjoyed watching the World Cup so far, and the excitement is undeniable. I tend to side with baseball/american football because it's what I MOST enjoy watching.
That being said, it boils down to what pro sports you grow up following and what country you are raised in. Aside from that it often becomes a pissing contest. "The rest of the world can't be wrong" or "Just because it is more popular doesn't make it a better product". BOTH those statements are true.
If only they had more stats, a geek like me might become a soccer nut.
