Has anyone ever bought a house/property in a foreign country? Done a lot of research, but wondering if anyone has gone through the actual process and how different it might be from buying a house in the US?

I've been looking into it. My wifes brothers build homes in Prague where the real estate market is booming right now. Also, I could probably make a bundle doing it.

So. Cal
ive been looking into buying islands all outside of the us for quite sometime, i just need more of a backroll to do it. It is something ive always wanted and owning real estate abroad is a nice hedge aganst the U.S. dollar which is losing ground weekly and many very smart men (Warren Buffet included) are betting that the dollar is going to have a very hard crash.

I read that if you are to buy real estate abroad you have to go there and do all the shopping, search for the stats and everythign on the internet, but do not try to get a price range over the internet or anything like that. The best way is to travel on vacationa nd if you really like that place then go back and go up and down the streets and find a re agent that works there and knows the area.

privateislandsonline.com has some great links to different travel sites that have very interesting articles, i would start there

Recently bought condo under construction in Nanning China.
To be finished 4-07. In China you pay property tax once--at time of sale.Wifes sister is officer # bank that is building complex and am letting her handle things--so am no whiz on international rea lestate. Would be very cautious though unless you were fortuntate to haves someone you trust looking over seeing things.
I figured this a no brainer as Sister-in law or any family member (siblings include) were allowed one unit at 20% discount.
The total cost with discount was $47,000 for about 1,750 sq ft 3 bedroom 2 bath plus garage--in gated complex with 24 hour security.

So Cal
Many people, mostly from So Cal, have had their property confiscated in Mexico, particularly Baja, Mexico. They have lessened the restrictions on Americans buying property there, but there have been too many cases where government simply took the property. Plus the situation in Mexico has become intolerable. There are daily wars between police and drug cartels. The killings have even reached Rosarito Beach (about 30 miles south of US border) and Tijuana. Many Hispanics I know won't step foot in Mexico.
