Mel Gibson's statement, released to the news media early Tuesday, five days after his drunken driving arrest in Malibu:
There is no excuse, nor should there be any tolerance, for anyone who thinks or expresses any kind of anti-Semitic remark. I want to apologize specifically to everyone in the Jewish community for the vitriolic and harmful words that I said to a law enforcement officer the night I was arrested on a DUI charge.

I am a public person, and when I say something, either articulated and thought out, or blurted out in a moment of insanity, my words carry weight in the public arena. As a result, I must assume personal responsibility for my words and apologize directly to those who have been hurt and offended by those words.

The tenets of what I profess to believe necessitate that I exercise charity and tolerance as a way of life. Every human being is God's child, and if I wish to honor my God I have to honor his children. But please know from my heart that I am not an anti-Semite. I am not a bigot. Hatred of any kind goes against my faith.

I'm not just asking for forgiveness. I would like to take it one step further, and meet with leaders in the Jewish community, with whom I can have a one on one discussion to discern the appropriate path for healing.

I have begun an ongoing program of recovery and what I am now realizing is that I cannot do it alone. I am in the process of understanding where those vicious words came from during that drunken display, and I am asking the Jewish community, whom I have personally offended, to help me on my journey through recovery. Again, I am reaching out to the Jewish community for its help. I know there will be many in that community who will want nothing to do with me, and that would be understandable. But I pray that that door is not forever closed.

This is not about a film. Nor is it about artistic license. This is about real life and recognizing the consequences hurtful words can have. Its about existing in harmony in a world that seems to have gone mad.

I heard someone talking on the TV in the background that this would be the end of his career. Really? I would have to put my money on the fact that his career is not over because of this, but I could be wrong.

Bottom line. Mel is what he is & we are what we are. Black is black and white is white. God bless him, so he doesn't like Jews. All of us don't like all of us, we may not like some of us that don't like some of us. The world goes on .

Like cooz I thought the sugar tits comment was hilarious. Thinking further I think it was of course totally ignorant to make the racist comments he did, obviously people had him correctly pegged when he did the movie passion of the Christ. Personally I didn't see it in the movie, but like people say, you generally speak the truth when loaded. That being said, they were words, racist, but words, and everyone is still entitled to their opinion in this country last I knew, no matter how ignorant. Words are words, they may hurt, but they don't mame or kill.

What has completely at lost in this scenario, is the guy was totally totally loaded, doing almost 90 in a 40mph zone, and is really lucky he didn't kill or mame someone's mother or father, or worse kill a car load of kids out cruising around.

Never mind the bull shit racist words, and posturing for forgiveness, the judge should make him do couple hundred hrs. of community service to kids about drinking and driving.

don't agree with you too much, but here, I do wholeheartedly.

Also, there's lots of people who don't care one lick since his comment was towards Jewish folk because that's how they feel too. You can look at this posting forum and see how much people can't stand people of the Jewish faith. I'm not just talking about BEANTOWNJIM either! There have been a few threads locked and sent dumpster diving because of racist remarks against Jewish people. Heck, even in this thread, people are giving him a free ride. He's one of my favorite actors of all time, but that doesn't mean I give him a pass. Glad he apologized, but why did he say it in the first place? Because he's racist against Jewish people. If you think there was a lot of uproar over these comments, think if he would have talked about the nig.... and ni.... lovers? Think about it! Jewish people are the most hated of any group internationally.

Jewish? Most hated? I wouldn't agree with that.

I just think that there are so few of them that they are not taken up for as much as most.

I think he is very wrong for what he did, but I am not convinced that this event will be a career ending one.

I don't mean to sound callous about his racist comments, they were completely ignorant, and I stated so. As I said, many have thought he was a racist for quite some time, obviously they were correct. He made his bed, now he will have to live with his ignorance. But in the end, they were words, ugly ignorant racist words, but words non the less. Again, I have spent a good portion of my life in hospitals where many many people die completely needlessly from drinking and driving, I really strongly feel a good opportunity for a lesson slipped by here. With all the hoopla here I think a good opportunity for education and the seriousness of drinking and driving was missed.

I don't think it will bother his career either unless it's some sort of self-destruction on his part. I still think worldwide though that Jewish people are the minority most descriminated against.

mel gibson should be ashamed of himself on many levels....

1st he goes 40 mph over the speed limit drunk..then he tries to escape from the cops..what a role model for his 10 kids & all of the other young people who idolize these people in hollywood.....his family must be really proud of him!!

mel gibson's father is a well known holocaust denyer (sp ?) who most likely taught mel his hatred of the jewish people....truth comes out sometime when a person is drunk & i believe it's true this time.

bigotry of any kind is based on ignorance that many times are learned from childhood..as was mel's case....

some of those that were taught this realize what they were taught & correct their perspective but others don't....& unfortuantely mel still believes what his father taught him....i wonder if he is teaching his kids....

Mel's just still upset about the Jews killing Christ ......in his movie. Kinda like when you have a dream about someone you know doing something really bad. You end up kinda pissed at them in real life, even though it's all in your head.

He tried to escape? No One seems to be talking about that. In Fact listening to police report yesterday no one said that. Yes what he did was wrong. I Don't care if he does not like me you or Jews. Should keep that info to him self. Said sorry, Sorry & sorry. What do we need a fourth. SO His alcohol count was 1.3. 25/30 years ago he would not have been considered drunk. Yes he was. Im just saying laws back then let us all drive drunk.

I would say that the most hated people around the world are white, American Christian males. Hell, we hear about it all the damn time.
