I think this is a pretty solid pre-season rating of the top teams but I see Oklahoma falling in the next vote as a result of this week's dismissal of Bomar and Quinn. They will probably land around #15 in my opinion.

i'm not a fan of preseaon polls but for discussion where would you put boise st.?

around 18

i think they beat orest and fresno at home and the game at Utah will be what decides whether they go undefeated (i suspect they lose to the Utes).

with 18 returning starters and a very tough home field advantage and a weak schedule, they should go undefeated in the WAC.

if they win at Utah they should bein the top 10.

I am so glad ASU isn't top 25...less respect the better with that team...they let success go to their heads to easy.

i see all those teams losing at least 4 games thie year.

now..do i think those Boise is better than those teams? mmmmm, tough to say this early on.

but i would vote how i see the final standings to be,
considering schedule and such. not how good i think the teams are right now. maybe that's a flaw in my thinking....

Copied from am email newsletter:

The nation's coaches obviously realize the Longhorns have a lot of talent because I don't remember a team starting off this high without a quarterback who has ever played a down of college football. Of course, Texas went 13-0 last year and has a 20-game winning streak, plus 14 starters returning.

The Longhorns were No. 2 behind USC all of the 2005 season before turning the tables on the Trojans with a 41-38 victory in the Rose Bowl for the National Championship.

The showdown between No. 1 and No. 2 won't take nearly as long this season because the Longhorns and the Buckeyes will face off in Austin on September 9. This is the sixth consecutive season the Longhorns have opened in the Top 10 and the third time in the last four years they have been ranked in the Top Five. It is the first time since the poll began in 1982 that the Horns have made six consecutive appearances in the Top 10.

"I've always believed we shouldn't have polls until October, when we have a chance to see what a team is really like," said Texas' head coach Mack Brown. "But since there are pre-season polls, I always go back to what Coach Royal told us years ago when he said, 'Pre-season polls are like a beauty contest. But if somebody's gonna enter you, you'd like to win.'

"Our guys saw last year that the most important thing is to focus on your immediate goal and not worry about rankings because it is where you are at the end of the season that matters. But, it is a whole lot easier to get to No. 1 from No. 2 than it is from No. 20."

Yes, Duke got 1 vote in the poll, despite going 1-10 last year, and, well, being Duke. The culprit? Steve Spurrier. Spurrier doesn't just slant the poll in favor of his own team, he does for teams he used to work for. Here's what he had to say about it.

"Yeah, I claim that. I've been voting for the boys from Duke since, oh, about 1990, whenever I started voting on that poll. I just want 'em to know that I haven't forgotten about 'em and I appreciate everything they did for me. That's why I did it."

...............................................

Maybe he should have just sent Duke a dozen roses.
