The actual size and composition of Israel's nuclear stockpile is uncertain, and is the subject of various estimates and reports. It is widely reported that Israel had two bombs in 1967, and that Prime Minister Eshkol ordered them armed in Israel's first nuclear alert during the Six-Day War. It is also reported that, fearing defeat in the October 1973 Yom Kippur War, the Israelis assembled 13 twenty-kiloton atomic bombs.

Israel could potentially have produced a few dozen nuclear warheads in the period 1970-1980, and might have possessed 100 to 200 warheads by the mid-1990s. In 1986 descriptions and photographs of Israeli nuclear warheads were published in the London Sunday Times of a purported underground bomb factory. The photographs were taken by Mordechai Vanunu, a dismissed Israeli nuclear technician. His information led some experts to conclude that Israel had a stockpile of 100 to 200 nuclear devices at that time.

By the late 1990s the U.S. Intelligence Community estimated that Israel possessed between 75-130 weapons, based on production estimates. The stockpile would certainly include warheads for mobile Jericho-1 and Jericho-2 missiles, as well as bombs for Israeli aircraft, and may include other tactical nuclear weapons of various types. Some published estimates even claimed that Israel might have as many as 400 nuclear weapons by the late 1990s. We believe these numbers are exaggerated.

Where in that small country did they find to do all that. Or was it done in another countries desert. Hint. And Maybe even a few given them by someone? I mean does everyone understand the size of facility needed to do this. Americas first site was over 2 million Sq Ft. That's in the half mile size. And that was one site there was part two witch was another 300000 sq ft. They got em but I don't think they made them all with out lots of help.

djv...look at the size of israel`s economy....not the landmass....they are a technologically advanced western society...a democracy with close ties to other democracies....and there`s plenty of room in israel for nuclear technology...that`s a silly argument...

the u.s. may have helped...maybe alot...that`s not clear.....neither of us knows for sure....and if we did,it may well be the only reason that israel exists as we speak......

as soon as iran or the islamofascists get a nuclear weapon,it may not matter....because the islamofascists do not value life...as the west does....and there will be no such thing as a m.a.d.(mutually assured destruction)deterrent...as we had with the soviet union...we`re dealing with a 7th century mentality..as ahmadinnerjacket has repeatedly illustrated.......the islamists don`t really care if they die...they are going on to a greater reward anyway....

that`s why they can`t be allowed to have the ultimate weapon...

one thing that is certain...there is no record in modern history of one democracy attacking another....that is why germany and japan are no longer threats to us...and why,i think, that this administration is attempting to establish democracy in the middle east....

be that right or wrong...i`m not arguing that point...

btw,it`s fairly amazing...what israel has accomplished for a country in the middle east that has virtually no oil....

I'm not sure if three weeks ago is 'modern history', but didn't it just happen with Lebanon and Israel?

Palestine is led by a democratically elected terror organization who constantly attacks Israel, which is another democracy.

Hitler was democratically elected.

was it lebanon attacking israel?....or was it hezbollah?...i don`t think that hezbollah is actually considered the lebanese army.....

they may be a political party....but,they aren`t "the lebanese gov`t".....

a political party with their own military?...hezbollah in lebanon and hamas in gaza.....lol..that`s a pretty wild concept.....thank god we don`t have that in the u.s.a....

i`ll qualify my statement with the phrase "western style" democracy....

we good?

Thanks for the clarification, Cooz. Most of us were wondering why Gore wasn't the president after winning the popular vote in 2000. And it was also baffling that we don't hold a national vote on everything from flag burning to abortion. Now we know.
