Hewlett Packard Compaq / Business Network / NC 2400 / 1.2 Ghz

I've never owned a laptop and have no idea what I'm getting or might be getting into.

Is this a reliable machine?

Thanks.

my advice on laptops is to get an 8ell or better battery and to get a slower processor or one thatis very conservative on suckin up your juice.

I like HP printers, but I have had alot of freinds have problems with their desktops, the one freind i know who has a latop by them likes it alot though.

Consumer Reports

Consumer Reports

rated Compaq bottom on list of "repairs and serious problems" (22%) based on 73,000 laptops purchased between 2000 and 2004 in annual questionnare.

Toshiba rated #1 (16%) and I can vouch for that---I have one from 1999 or so (166 intel MMX chip!) that still works great---I keep it for a backup.

no. 2 was Apple, then IBM, Sony, Dell (18%, tho everyone sez they are getting worse, but I got one few months back and been fine so far...), HP, Gateway and then Compaq at bottom. "Differences of 3 or more points are meaningful" CR sez.

Hewlett-Packard Co has beefed up its line of business laptops, releasing new devices that include an ultra-light machine, fitted with a 12-inch widescreen and weighing 2.8lb.

The nc2400 Notebook PC is not, strictly speaking, the first 12-inch laptop in the sub-3lb category from HP, there having been a device with that size screen from Compaq a few years ago.

It is, however, the first under the HP brand and the first with a widescreen format, marking the company's entry into a segment where it will compete against Sony, Toshiba and Dell.

Running on the Core Solo processor from Intel, the nc2400 comes with a full-size keyboard and built-in WiFi connectivity. It has a list price starting at $1,599. Ken Carter, North American product manager for HP's ultra-light laptop lines, said the weight quoted is for the 2400 is a starting figure, since "different battery sizes and optical drives add weight."

Next up is the 4400, available in both nc (laptop) and tc (tablet) configurations, weighing respectively 3.9lb and 4.6lb, which the company still considers to be in the ultra-light segment.

Both versions are fitted with standard-format 12-inch XGA screens and run Core Duo processors from Intel. These two devices replace respectively the nc4200 and tc4200, the big difference being the advent of the dual-core processor, where the previous generation runs on regular Pentium M.

Between my wife, son, daughter-in-law and myself we own 4 Dell laptops. The oldest one is my wife's model 8600 whick we bought 3 years ago. Between the 4 laptops we have never, I repeat never had one issue, not one. I would consider a Dell in a minute.

OR:

Costco carries a very large variety of Laptops with a 6 month return policy, no questions asked, simply say I didn't like it is a good enough reason to return. With this policy you could try out the different ones they offer. Here are a couple links to view these computers.
