Vanished into vortex
Turns out the wife is scared to death of dogs, who knew? So a German Shepard was out of the question, we settled on a Lab/Boxer mix that we got from a safe house through PetFinder.com

Pretty cool people there who take unwanted puppies and find them a home, so Dodger the watchdog is on duty! Well, he will be soon, he's only 7 weeks old.

Questions:

Do all puppies breath very hard when they are sleeping?

Is it normal that he stands in his water dish when getting a drink?

When will he stop chewing the living hell out of everything in the house?

Oh yeah, almost forgot.

Yes

Yes

Yes

but on the last one, only if you train him correctly. Go out NOW, and get a book on it. Treat and train this dog correctly, and it will give you some of the best times in your life.

LMFAO!! :mj07: Those questions made me laugh hard!

Their breathing is weird when they sleep. They also whine and cry a lot in their sleep, and they jerk around and dream too.

He's liable to stand in his water dish, stand in his poop, eat his poop, etc.

The chewing, you can break. Make sure he has a puppy toy to chew on. The synthetic bones are really good because they have a taste they like, and they are nearly indestructable. Only scold him for chewing on innappropriate things when you can catch him in the act, and then, do not spank him with your hand. The best thing is to swat him easily with a rolled up newspaper while saying a stern "NO". People who swat their dogs with an open hand all the time get those dogs that cower down when you try to pet them as they see the open hand as a negative even when you're going to pet them, and you don't want that.

A couple of more things. This dog needs to know you are the master, so you need to show that to him in dog terms. Get him down on the ground, growl at him, and bite the bridge of his nose (not enough to make him cry, but hard enough to make him yip and feel it). That's what dogs do, and he'll innately understand that a whole lot better than telling him no 5,000 times a day.

Teach him one word commands. When you take him out to do his business, teach him "OUTSIDE" and say it as soon as he squats and praise him, and repeat that one word every time he goes out. In a month or so, you can take him out and say OUTSIDE, and he'll go. It's terrible to chase a puppy around forever waiting for it to crap especially when they think you are just playing. I also think it sounds silly when people are saying "pee-pee" and "poo-poo" to a dog, lol.

Other good one word commands I have used are "COME", "SIT", "SHAKE", "STAY", "NO", "GOOD", and you do a lot more advanced commands as he gets older.

Lastly, if you don't already have one, get a portable kennel for him that's big enough to accomodate him as an adult. While he's a puppy, you can leave him in his kennel for several hours, and he won't mess in it. You can get him out, carry him out to the grass, say your "OUTSIDE" word, and he'll go. You can do this until he's trained well, then he can sleep between you and the missus :142smilie A kennel is also great for puppies when you need to go somewhere so he's not running wild in your house chewing up stuff (at least until you have him trained well). He'll see this kennel as a sanctuary, and use it up through adulthood. Put some nice cedar bedding in there so it's comfortable for him. That will also help with the dog smell and keep him from shedding all over your carpet or wherever he chooses to sleep.

Have fun with your puppy, and make sure you are the master and not him.

a squirt gun will also work well if you catch him being a bad dog.

give him a squirt and it will make him stop. as the dog gets bigger, you can use a garden hose if he still acts up. We had one that looked like a fist with the finger pointing out and after a few weeks we could just point our own hand and say NO and he would stop.

Screw using the word "outside"
(you'll get hit with a can of Milwaukee's Best Lite for not being a real man)
I use "shake a leg" - always get a laugh when I do it in public.

Great advice, Six Five. You summed it all up perfectly. Consistency is the key, and the portable kennel idea worked fantastically for us. Puppy's sleep all the time, so it's no big deal to have the puppy in a kennel inside. He feels safer and more secure there, anyway, than a big 'ol lonely house. I found that to kennel the dog up for a couple of years in the house to take the pressure off HIM from time to time, as well as us, worked well. Ours is a Golden that only cares about attention at all times, though, so the lab/boxer mix might require less attention.

Good luck. Sounds like an interesting mix.

Yea, the advice about relating to him/her in dog terms....my current dog only responded to being grabbed by the scruff and growled at? You could beat that dog, yell, scream, water bottle, the whole bit. Nothing worked but that:shrug:

And he loves his crate. Dogs are natural cave dwellers, so he is very comfortable in there.

Seems like we have some real dog-whisperers here. Can someone please come train my dog? She is a crazy crazy bitch...and doesn't respond to the usual "SHAKE" type of commands....and unfortunately she knows that she is the TRUE master of me.

The squirt gun and hose may work well for some, but in certain cases the dogs actually enjoy this attention - my sister's dog absolutely LOVES getting sprayed by the hose  Makes watering the garden more like watering the dog...

good stuff......just finished telling my brother the same as he just bought a French Bulldog.
He was into the long "don't eat that you'll get sick"....etc. A simply stern NO is the trick. And the pecking order with you as the master....YUP. Geez wanted to give you some points for this reply but it tells me to share ?????

Be consistent, it sounds like it might take some time, but it's worth it. Show her that you're the boss and mean it when you're showing her.

AS SIXFIVE COMMENTED, AND A PROUD OWNER OF A 6 YEAR OLD BOXER MYSELF; ALLOT OF DOGS (ESPECIALLY MINE) DREAM, BARK, TWITCH, SNORE AND DROOL IN THEIR SLEEP. DON'T WORRY TO MUCH ABOUT IT AND IT'S COOL THAT YOU FOUND A DOG WITH SOME BOXER IN HIM.
