Personally, I don't tip. A/I can't afford it and B/If I don't get good service, I don't go back. No manager has ever offered to knock a few bucks off the tab to help with the tip. That's just my attitude.

A/if you can't afford the tip, then you shouldn't be eating out in the first place.

B/If you don't get good service, it's probably because they heard you don't tip!

Personally, I am a HUGE tipper - as a former waitress (who was left NO tip on my very first table, even though I was as sweet as can be and they were informed it was my first table and service was impeccable) I understand the power of tips. That was back in the day, but when you're getting paid $3/hour, you live off the tips.

And as a huge tipper, I have reaped the benefits. If you frequent the same restaurants, as I do, the managers and waitstaff get to know you real quick and they all want your table. Just a few days ago, I was in a very expensive restaurant and the waiter (who we had never been served by) told us - "good to see you in here again"...because he knew us by reputation. I can't tell you how much free food and alcohol I have been served as a result of being a good tipper - or they will take our reservation when no one else is allowed, etc.

TIP TIP TIP - it's good for you too... :SIB

Agent was mocking the people who said that, not saying he actually only tips 10 percent. He's still a tool, but that's not what he was saying.

I stand corrected. I guess I didn't read the thread closely enough to associate those quotes with other posters.

i know full well that kosar is a good tipper....when i saw him in vegas in july he tipped me for just talking to him....classy guy all around.

lol- Besides yourself, huh? Well, I can definitely say that we both 'overtip', but as the Hippo mentions above, it comes back to us and anybody else who is generous.

I know what you mean. I've been in the bar business for 18 years, and people tell me I over-tip. Bartenders and waitresses are always the best tippers at my place. Just curious, what do you consider proper tipping etiquette at a bar?

My preferred list always looked like this:

1. Bikers! We had a group that always came in there and it was an auto $5 just to refill a coke. They were a little rowdy but lots of fun.
2. Bartenders
3. Servers

Worst tippers you ask?? Not sure I should post this but I'm going to...:nono:

1. Blacks
2. Deaf people
3. Reggie Miller (asswipe)

:sadwave:

Depends, am I paying for a Coors Light one at a time as I go, or running a tab and drinking Top Shelf Margaritas and shots and stuff?

i worked as a waiter in a few resorts in upstate ny to help fund my college expenses...in the late 60's to early 70's...

the tippers were broken down like this from best to worst....

people from ny
people from penn.
people from the south
people from canada

the guests stayed either a weekend, a week, or through the summer. the hotels gave the guests little yellow envelopes to place their tips in..usually at the end of their stay. all of the hotels said that people would get fired if somebody ever questioned a guest about a tip. so the employedd usually opened the envelopes at the end of the day....

i once got an envelope that had no money but little pieces of bread inside..i also got a few envelopes with package sugar inside instead of money.

Drinks one at a time, priced between $2.00 - $3.50 (college town).

Ok, acceptable would be $1 to me...maybe the quarters if it's a busy place. This is what I deem acceptable, not what I personally would tip.

Also depends if I have to "serve" you at all, in a college type bar I probably don't but if you are plopped down at the bar and I have to constantly empty your ash tray, wipe things down, get your girlfriend water, etc. then I expect a little more.

If it were me, I would throw you a $5 on the $2 and probably like $6 or so on the $3.50. Or more likely if we were going to be there for some time, I would throw you a $20 on the first one to "establish', and then a couple each time as we go...but of course I would expect you to play the game also and hook up my drinks, be prompt, etc.

Thanks Agent. That is some very generous tipping. I guess it depends on what part of the country a person is in. Ours here in Wisconsin is obviously not a very good tipping area. Our so called "happy hour regulars" will sit here for a couple of hours, drink $2.25 beers, expect their butts kissed, and then leave less than $5.00 when they are done. At night when it gets busy, some will tip $1.00 a drink at the most while others just leave the quarters. A few will actually take their quarters and leave nothing:mj16: Unfortunately for the bartenders, that is the common practice at most places in our area.:banghead:

On the course!
Daddy......they really that tight over there?

I don't think the demographic is a good indicator. You got decent, and shitty people, wherever you go. I've been with people who tip to the frigging penny! WTF is that?!!?

To me.....it's more trouble peeling the quarters off the damned bar, then leaving them!

On the other hand, I don't think throwing someone a 20 spot for $5 worth of drinks is worth any "extra effort" that might be put forth

yyz, I'm not sure if they are tight or just ignorant. A lot of these people grew up in very small rural towns, and probably just don't know any better. The students that come here from big cities tip very well, however, they are also used to paying $5.00 for a drink where they come from instead of $2.50 like it is around here.

When I was managing the bar, we were very due for a price increase on domestic bottles. We went from $1.75 to $2.25 on purpose to skip pass the even $2 price. Our bartenders immeidately increased their tip due to the "change tippers". Which to be perfectly honest is a generous tip when your doing it every beer.

This was several years ago.

But $0.75 on a $2.25 purchase. Nice 33% tip.

Here is little non tipping story that probably is taking retaliation a little too far, but I sure laughed my ass off when it happened.

A guy I worked with had a lady plop down at his 4 top table by herself on a very busy Friday night, we were on about a 2 hour wait all night.

She sat there and read a book, for about 5 hours!

Right on cue, every 45 minutes or so she would order soup or a salad or a coffee or whatever. He only had a 3 table station as he was fairly new, and was flipping out because his rent was due and he wasn't making shit that night....in fact he had come in and picked up that shift from another server because he needed the money so bad.

Anyway, he serves this lady with a smile all night, never is rude to her. She finally pays and leaves around 11:30 that night and tips him $2.00 ALL IN NICKELS (BDBs Mom??)

He gets my attention, and says, want to see something funny? and out to the parking lot he storms, change in hand...I run down a service hallway, and peek out the emergency door and watch the action. It was snowing hard that night, and he collects one of the best snowballs off a rail I have ever seen...packs the nickels into it, and drills this lady like he is Roger Clemens, I mean wind up and all...she let out a shrill that would curl your hair:mj07: :mj07: :mj07: :mj07:

I fell inside and slammed the door, and laughed for at least 10 minutes. He of course got fired and the Rest. got sued but I never heard the outcome.

Classic....It was everything any server who has been stiffed has ever wanted to do.:142smilie
