the story I'm hearing that Felipe Alou is saying he's not sure he can get his players to show up and finish out the season?

GIANTS NOTEBOOK
Dodgers on hand for Soap Opera Weekend

The afternoon soaps have nothing on the story lines for this weekend's Giants-Dodgers series, which begins tonight at China Basin.

For starters, the Giants have a chance to knock the Dodgers out of the postseason. (Gee, has that ever happened before?) Making the story juicier is the man in the visiting general manager's booth, former Giants assistant GM Ned Colletti. There is Pedro Feliz's bid for 100 RBIs and a few other individual statistical quests.

If that were not enough, 11 potential Giants free agents, including Barry Bonds, Jason Schmidt, Ray Durham, Moises Alou and Feliz, could be playing their final games in a San Francisco uniform. This likely is Felipe Alou's final weekend as manager, too.

Do not expect the Giants to gather in their clubhouse this afternoon and start chanting, "Beat L.A.! Beat L.A.!" However, with their playoff drive halted, they surely will be motivated to send the Dodgers home, too.

"I haven't heard anybody talking about it, but I guarantee you it's on everybody's mind. It's got to be," said Noah Lowry, who opens the series tonight coming off his best start of the month.

"Even though we're still out of it we need to play these games for ourselves and our fans," Lowry said. "I'm going to go out there and give it everything I've got, just like always, and hopefully we can knock the Dodgers out of it."

Monday, Monday: Every victory by the rampaging Astros makes it that more likely the Giants will have to play their rainout makeup in St. Louis on Monday to help settle the National League Central race. It would be a pain in the rump for most Giants and downright weird for Matt Morris, who thought he made his final start of 2006 against Arizona on Tuesday night but would be in line to face the Cardinals on Monday.

Morris pitched his best game in a month against the Diamondbacks, allowing two runs in eight innings before the Giants won in the ninth on Moises Alou's two-run homer.

"After (Tuesday), if they asked me to pitch in St. Louis I'd be a fool to turn it down," Morris said. "Physically, I felt a lot better. Mentally, I'm eager to make my next start."

If it is not against the Cardinals on Monday, he will have to wait until next spring in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Briefly: Felipe Alou is following the Cardinals and Astros intently, saying, "I'm like The Weather Channel. I'm tracking it. That depression is developing. They lost (Tuesday) with (Chris) Carpenter pitching." ... Alou hopes Jonathan Sanchez goes to winter ball and pitches once a week. "He needs to pitch, but he doesn't need to pitch a lot," said Alou, mindful of not wearing down the 23-year-old's arm.

Thanks IE.

I've looked at a few sports news type sites on the net and came across nothing myself. This local radio talent that was talking about it was quite serious though (possibly even involving the commish). I thought I should at least bring attention to it.

i don't buy it either. giants brass wants nothing more than to knock out the good guys. visions of piazza knocking them out of the playoffs when the dodgers weren't in the mix ten or so years ago still rings in their heads.

colletti wants payback though so lots of subplots.

tonight is the night for the dodgers to win it. i don't like their chances against caine or schmidt at all. kuo has been pitching great and its an advantage that the over 40 team hasn't seen him yet for an extended period of time or as a starter.

my guess is that if they dont' win tonight, they will press and are in trouble. they know this as well.

philly most likely won't sweep florida and one game assures them at least a playoff at home. i would guess tonight they would get it because regardless of maddux and lowe pitching the other ones they aren't great matchups.

if you have access to live betting, be sure to pay attention to if tomko takes the mound. be sure to bet against them your mortgage as soon as he is announced.

its really simple for the dodgers. a playoff spot is theres if brett tomko never sees the field. it really is that easy. they can win one game most likely tonight if tomko doesn't come in. if he does, its all over.

I'm thinking possibly Alou was referring to some of the longer in the tooth veterans (esp of course Blockhead). Plus he knows he's gone and he could give a hoot.

The Giants WILL show up. The games WILL be sellouts, and a full effort WILL be given by all players.

I GUARANTEE IT.

that being said. the giants suck, and WILL lose. :mj07:
