Coach Ron Wilson has resolved the great goalie competition between Vesa Toskala and Evgeni Nabokov in San Jose:

Both will play.

Toskala gets the call tonight when the Sharks open a season of great expectations against visiting St. Louis. Nabokov will start Saturday's Game 2 when the New York Islanders roll into San Jose.

After that? It's anyone's guess.

"We have two great goalies, so why shouldn't they both play?" Wilson asked rhetorically. "Minnesota has been doing this for years and their goalies have done really well. Carolina did it last year in the playoffs for God's sakes and they won the Stanley Cup.

"And I think our situation warrants that because there's no difference between the two goalies."

The Sharks were believed to be working on a deal Wednesday with Nolan Schaefer's agent to trade the young goalie.

Toskala, playing better and more healthy, finished as San Jose's starting goalie last season. At age 29, the native of Finland is two years younger than Nabokov, but making his first Opening Night start.

During a preseason in which the Sharks won six of eight games, Toskala produced the better numbers. He went 3-1 with a 2.22 goals-against average and .925 save percentage compared with 1-1, 3.31 and .897 for Nabokov.

"I think I had a good preseason," Toskala said. "I was trying to focus on my game. I feel great and really comfortable on the ice."

Neither player knew of his playing status until told before practice Wednesday. Nabokov, who met behind closed-doors with Wilson for several minutes following the skate, downplayed the significance of dressing as the backup against the Blues.

"I guess if you want, you can make a really big issue out of it, but I don't want to get into that," Nabokov said. "It's out of my control. Whatever they plan, it's their plan. I've got to come out and play hard when asked."

Nabokov was disappointed in the final five of the 10 goals he surrendered in the preseason, but said he feels fine and is happy to be working with Warren Strelow in person again every day after the team's goaltending coach had been away the last couple of seasons because of illness.

Wilson, too, warns not to read too much into Toskala starting tonight.

"Based on how he finished last season and how he played in the preseason, he gets to play the first game," the coach said. "It doesn't mean anything more than that. It doesn't mean he's the No. 1 goalie and Nabby's the backup. I don't want to read any of that because that's not the case at all."

Wilson said the plan is to split the pair for now, but if one struggles and another plays well, one might take the reins for a while. He's not worried about bruising any egos, either.

"They deal with that. I don't care about somebody's hurt feelings. Boo hoo," Wilson said, pointing to a box of tissues on his desk. "My feelings are hurt if someone doesn't get the job done. When you're put in and you're not ready because your feelings are hurt, my feelings are hurt. And that's what they don't want.

"We're a team, we're here to win, not to satisfy somebody's ego. We're here to win the Stanley Cup. Period."

Briefly: Defenseman Christian Ehrhoff left practice early Wednesday. He's still nursing an upper-body injury and is questionable for tonight's game. Doug Murray or Rob Davison will play if Ehrhoff is out. ... Rookie defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic is set to make his NHL debut. ... Defensemen Eric Brewer, Jay McKee and forward Vladimir Orszagh are on injured reserve for the Blues, who missed the postseason for the first time in 26 seasons last year.

Esche starter tonight for Flyers..

As for the net, will a goalie tandem really work?

The biggest question here was the personality of Robert Esche. He wasn't happy last season when he was pushed to the limit by Antero Niittymaki. That happened after Esche was injured and the rookie filled in as the every-game starter.

Esche has said this season will be different.

"I'm not asking questions this year," Esche said at the start of camp. "Just tell me when I'm going to play. I'm ready for it.

"Last year was bad situation after bad situation after bad situation, argument after argument. I was injured, I was trying to fight through a bad hip, and that stuff isn't easy to go through."

But the question now is again about health. Niittymaki tore his left hip labrum and now will play with the aid of a series of cortisone injections to keep the inflammation under control and quiet the pain. But his injury will be there until he has it surgically repaired the way he had his right hip done this summer.

All of these issues can be overcome. This is a team game, after all, and can a single issue really bring down a season?

Curtis Joseph, will start in goal tonight for coyotes.

Islanders at Coyotes
Records: Season opener for both teams
Line: Phoenix 140-160
Series history: This is the first meeting since the 2003-04 season. Overall, Phoenix trails 20-28-12-0, including 11-15-4-0 at home.
Scouting report: Islanders ? Like the Coyotes, New York is coming off a 12th-place conference finish. The biggest headlines the Islanders made in the offseason concerned replacing their new general manager after just six weeks on the job with last season?s backup goalie and giving unproven goalie Rick Dipietro an unprecedented 15-year contract. Former Coyote Mike Sillinger is centering the team?s top line.

Coyotes ? Phoenix went 3-4 in the preseason and was undefeated at home. The team believes being dominant at home in the regular season will be one of the biggest keys to success. The Coyotes enter the season relativity healthy. Forward Fredrik Sjostrom (shoulder) is expected to return after the first two games, and center Mike Ricci (neck) is the only player on the injured list. Last year?s team MVP, Curtis Joseph, will start in goal.

G Henrik Lundqvist starts for the rangers tonight...

Jagr's cautionary tale
Leader urges club's fans not to panic if the club starts slow

October 5, 2006

GREENBURGH, N.Y. - On the eve of the Rangers' regular-season opener against the Washington Capitals, Jaromir Jagr offered some words of caution - for his teammates and presumably for fans.

"The key is, don't panic if we have a bad start," said Jagr, who is expected to be named the Rangers 26th captain before tonight's game at Madison Square Garden, "and if it's a good start, don't get overconfident."

Jagr, the 34-year-old Czech superstar who was a runner-up for the league MVP last season when he scored 54 goals and added 69 assists, said yesterday that while he feels no pain in his surgically-repaired left shoulder, some strength is missing. "It's better but it's not where I want it to be," he said. "I wish I could do miracles but I can't."

Nonetheless, Jagr will begin the season on the No. 1 line with center Michael Nylander, but without fellow countryman Martin Straka on the left side. That trio was immensely successful during the Rangers' surprising climb to the top of the Atlantic Division, but coach Tom Renney has moved Straka to center the No. 2 line and inserted Brendan Shanahan on the first unit. That top trio has struggled to mesh so far.

"When you get these elite players, they're unpredictable, so they kind of do things differently, that what's makes them great," said Shanahan. Although the European puck-control styles differ from future Hall of Famer Shanahan's drive-to-the-net approach, Shanahan skated with Swede Henrik Zetterberg and Russian Pavel Datsyuk with the Detroit Red Wings last season, and Renney believes that some chemistry with Jagr and Nylander will evolve.

"I feel that they're a group of guys that will click," Renney said yesterday. "Whether they start clicking tomorrow night remains to be seen."

The change "allows us to manufacture three other lines that can do the job at both ends of the rink," Renney said, while leaving the door open for a Jagr-Straka reunion. Leaving Straka on the first line was "the safe thing to do," he said. "Sometimes you've got to step out a little bit ... If it takes us a certain number of games to get it right, I'm OK with that, as long as we're playing in the middle of April."

Blue notes: G Henrik Lundqvist will start tonight, with Kevin Weekes almost 100 percent recovered from a sore groin - as backup. "I want to play way more games than last year. I want to be better," said Lundqvist ... G Stephen Valiquette cleared waivers and was reassigned to Hartford, leaving the roster at 22 ... The other lines are expected to be Straka, Petr Prucha and Adam Hall; rookie left wing Nigel Dawes, C Matt Cullen and Jason Ward, and Blair Betts centering for Ryan Hollweg and Marcel Hossa.

On defense, Danny Markov will start the game paired with Lidstrom, leaving Mathieu Schneider and Niklas Kronwall to round out the top four. Since it's hard to think that Babcock would sit Chris Chelios, Andreas Lilja will likely be scratched because Brett Lebda would provide a good offensive counterpoint to Chelios on the third pairing. - Detroit Free Press
