I have a Dobe thats going to turn 1 yr old. He is past the chewing on everything stage. His last problem is he eats socks. 1st Time he ate one we took him to the vet because he wasnt eating. Vet took an x-ray and ended up pulling a sock from his ass. So far the count is 8-2. 8 thrown up and 2 from the ass. Only 1 trip to the vet. They come out on there own now. We make sure everything is picked up but if you drop a sock it is gone in 2 sec. We found out he was actually pulling socks out of the hamper thru the vent holes.

I have tried making loud noises to scare him away from socks. I have even bought bitter spray and put it on one and left it on the ground. Ill be damned if he didnt pick it up and start in on it. It was like it just added flavor to it. So then I got the bright idea of thinking the stuff wasnt bitter enough. So I tried a taste of it. I couldnt get the taste out of my mouth for the whole day.

My last resort is to get a shock collar. But like I said I want it to be a last resort. Any ideas on how to break him of this habit? I just know that sooner or later he is going to eat one and its going to get jammed up in his intestines.

hmmmmmm...

No solutions popping into mind right off.

Why are you opposed to a shock collar? Very effective way to train, and not brutal at all. Actually, u can put the collar on him, set him up with a sock, and then hit him with it. Shouldn't take more than a few times, then you can just have him wear the dummy collar and eventually ween him from that.

My first thought is not bitter but hot stuff on a sock.

I would try putting coins in a can with a top on it.
When he gets close to the can shake the can and yell NO !

Hopefully he is smart enough to get the message after awhile.

I would think he would stop after a few socks pulled out his ars.

Throw a sock on the floor and when the dog goes to eat it run your thumb or something up his ass. I don't know if it will work on the dog but made the woman stop what she was doing immediately yesterday..............careful though, if yesterday is any indication........once the dog realizes what happened it might get mad and bite you...........or just scream and cry and go to her mothers house for a day. Hope this helps.

will always try to be the boss ! went through the chewing stage a few times. a shock collar is, imo, the best and quickest way to train a dobe

Is it possible you could cut off your feet? Or maybe stop wearing socks and let your dog smell your smelly shoes at the end of the day.

Ok, I heard from her... probably not what you are looking for, but this is it...

Keep socks away from him. No contact. Cold turkey. Keep
him
out of bedrooms. Keep him out of laundry rooms. And good luck. (great
advice, eh?)

I talked to her and she basically said a shock collar would be just as effective as you punishing the dog everytime you see him going for the sock. The only way the dog is going to stop is to A) get punished everytime he goes for a sock...or B) not having contact with any socks, he will probably get over what ever it is.

As a side comment she said wash your damn feet,,, there is some smell in those socks that he is really attracted too. :)

Thanks for the hilarious replys. :mj07: :mj07:

I believe I will go with the shock collar. I cant wait for him to finish this phaze on his own because between him and the dryer I am losing a lot of socks.

He is a quick learner so hopefully it wont take more than 1 or 2 shocks.

Will post back on what happens.

Sixfive..would it be better to get the one that has one setting and you adjust the amount of shock by tightening the collar or the one that is adjusted with keys? Or will it make much difference for what I want to use it for?

I've never had one that adjusted strength of shock by how tight the collar is, so I'm not sure about that. If you are going to get one, I would suggest a used one off ebay. They are quite expensive new.

Shock Collar is great while you are around, if your dog has an IQ over 2 it will earn that and wait for you to leave. I agree with snoozer, go cold turkey and get your dog a chew toy.

Picked up the shock collar today. Will work with him tommorow. I was reading thru the book and it is completely different than what I thought it would be. I thought it would shock him to the point of pain but the level isnt suppose to be set that high. Just suppose to set it to a high stimulation so he feels it but dosent yelp. If it works for the dog I just may have to try it on the wife.

Cold turkey would be good if he didnt have any chew toys but they are all over the house.

He shouldnt know if he is going to get shocked or not if he has a dummy collar on after he learns what not to do. Granted dogs are smart. I think without the dummy collar he would go back to swallowing socks as soon as he realized it was off.
