West Virginia is going to roll up a big number tonight in Storrs as they will cover this spread and ensure the game does indeed go over the posted number. The Huskies will not be able to slow down Pat White, Steve Slaton and the rest of the Mountaineer offense that leads the nation in rushing at 328 yards per game (6.9 yards per carry) and is third in scoring at 41.5 points per contest. The Huskies allow 177.2 yards rushing per game and 4.4 yards per carry this year and those numbers will only go up tonight as West Virginia is set to bully this UConn defense.
Connecticut has hardly shown me much this year. The Huskies own a blowout win over I-AA Rhode Island to go along with unimpressive wins at Indiana (14-7) and against visiting Army (21-7) last week. Their three losses have come at home by margins of 11 (Wake Forest) and 24 (Navy), while also being routing by 22 points at South Florida two weeks ago. Three weeks ago, Navy abused UConn for 464(!) yards rushing and there's no way that this soft UConn defense is going to slow down White, Slaton & Co.
West Virginia is ranked 10th in the country in scoring defense and last week at Syracuse held the Orangemen to just 81 rushing yards (on 35 attempts) and only 146 yards passing (9-of-22 attempts). UConn wants to run the football as the Husky quarterbacks this year have been very, very sub-par. As have the UConn receivers and on a windy, chilly night in Storrs, the passing game will be tough to find much success with. And I don't expect the Huskies to have a great deal of success running the football on a Mountaineer stop unit that is allowing a mere 88 yards per game rushing and just 2.2 yards per carry.
Fourth-ranked West Virginia, which is 8-0 SU and 7-1 ATS in its last eight road games, loves to get out of the gates fast. Remember last month when they roared to a four touchdown lead on Maryland in the first quarter? Look for another quick start tonight as Rich Rodriguez and the Mountaineers understand that there are still lots of national doubters about this team. But considering they're on overall runs of 13-0 SU and 12-4 ATS, I'm not one of them. Last year, West Virginia rushed for only 228 yards, but still crushed visiting UConn, 45-13. In their double-digit win in Storrs two years ago (against a much better UConn team than this one), the Mountaineers rumbled for 309 yards on the ground. Tonight, they'll again pile up a big rushing number as they improve to 3-0 SU/ATS against the Huskies in the last three years.
And since UConn has failed to toss a fourth quarter scoring pass this year, I'm not thinking the backdoor cover is a possibility this evening. And did I mention that the Huskies have a terrible field goal kicking unit? The Mounatineers have covered 10 of their last 13 as a road chalk and they're on a spread run of 17-5 in night games. West Virginia, which has topped the posted total in five of its last six lined games, will score early and often in this one. The Mounatineers will score at least 42 points themselves as they cover and this game goes over!
