WASHINGTON vs. CALIFORNIA ? Saturday, October 21st ? 3:30 PM EST
Washington came out strong to begin the season witha 4-1 start but the catalyst for this early success was QB Isaiah Stanback who threw the ball for 1,325 yards while running for another 350 yards and four scores. The problem today as they travel to play a red hot California team is that Stanback had surgery this week to repair a dislocated foot and Carl Bonnell will take over the offense with only two starts under his belt which were both during the 2004 season. On defense, the Huskies have been relatively porous and allowed San Jose State and Fresno State to score 29 and 20 points respectively. Last week they were manhandled by Oregon State allowing a season high 488 yards
As I mentioned last week, this California team looks nothing like the team that Tennessee took apart in the season opener and HC Jeff Tedford obviously used that game as a motivational tool for his squad as they have since won six consecutive games by an average score of 40-16. Bears? QB Nate Longshore has done a tremendous job in throwing for 1,586 yards and 17 touchdowns. He had an off game last week against Wazzu but still managed to pull off a 21-3 win and cover. I have made a lot of money on the Bears this season and look to make some more here today with a team that I believe will be playing in Pasadena next January.
The Verdict: CALIFORNIA (-23?) 4 Units
TULSA vs. MEMPHIS ? Saturday, October 21st ? 8:00 PM EST
Everyone knew that the departure of DeAngelo Williams was going to be felt by Memphis this year but few expected that the Tigers would have only beaten Division 1-AA Chattanooga at this point in the season. Prior to last week?s home loss to Arkansas State, HC Tommy West fired DC Joe Lee Dunn and took over managing the defense while introducing a new system. The Indians, who had not beaten the Tigers in 10 straight games, took advantage of the confusion by produced a season high 435 yards of offense with a good balance of running and passing attacks led by a freshman quarterback. Memphis lost their third safety to injuries in that game and that is not good news as they host the Golden Hurricane this week.
Tulsa?s offense is averaging 242 yards passing and 171 yards rushing per game and the Tigers are coming off of a strong 31-10 road win against a very capable East Carolina team in a game which they held nearly a 15 minute advantage in time of possession. Since allowing 49 points to BYU in their only loss on September 9th, Tulsa has allowed only 42 total points over its past four games. The Cane?s defense is top notch and should have little trouble containing the one-dimensional Tiger offense that is averaging less that 100 rushing, allowing them to key on Memphis QB Martin Hankins. Tulsa?s pass defense is ranked No. 2 in the nation having held their opponents to 115 passing yards per game and while Hankins has had some success throwing the ball, he has been error prone with eight interceptions in six games.
The Verdict: TULSA (-13?) 5 Units
