You can get packages on the internet which makes this place very affordable. Sorry to intrude on your thread. Happy holidays to you and your family. God Bless!!

I was down there last Xmas and stayed at the Gala Beach Resort Playacar. My mom and dad took the whole family, so I can't tell you anything as far as price goes, but after looking at all of the other places, I would bet this one was one of cheapest. It wasn't some glamourous place, but it was all we needed. Lots of activiites for kids. It wasn't anything real fancy, but the location was great (southern most hotel on the strip), food was good and they had lots of the thatch huts to camp out at on the beach. $5 cab ride to town. I will definetely be going back there sometime soon. It is a little slice of heaven.

We've been down there the last 5 years. Is he looking for all inclusive or to stay in town and wing it. We really care for the all inclusive package. It usually runs from 35-39 hundred for 2, 8 days 7 nites. We stayed at the Gala last year, more of a family oriented place geared for familys, but kids there where never a problem. Place is nice, food not so good but the beach is perfect. Right next door is the Tucan, really nice, same beach and top not notch. The Allegro is really nice, but recent storms have eroded the beach. It is a smaller resort but that has it's advantages. Ask for an ocean room and you won't be disappointed. We also stayed at the Grand Xcaret. really nice but spread out. Man made lagoon for a beach. In town visits are a blast and shouldn't miss it. Bartering with the locals is great. Royal hideaway is more expensive and more of a honeymoon spot.As you see you found my weakness. Can't wait for that Feb. getaway. If you want any more info or things to do in the area just ask.

He's looking for cool, hip, no kids, and not all inclusive. More of a smaller on the beach hotel, not a big hotel with big crowds. Walking distance to downtow if possible, but not mandatory.

The non all inclusives are generally located near town or in town. Several under $100 a nite are the Alejari and the Colibi and the Costa del Mar nothing fancy but nice beachfront. A no frills thatch roof cabana is the Corto Maltes. Over $100 is the Playa Maya very nice and friendly people, the Blue Parrot orthe Alhambra hotel rooms run about 110-130 depending on season. All of these places are a block from the main drag (5th Ave),that is where you find all the nite spots and restaurants.

None of the hotels are over three stories tall, and from what I saw walking up and down the beach, none of them were what I would consider "crowded", and I was there on Xmas break. From my own observation, I don't think they want this place to turn into a party area like a spring break hangout. They don't allow anyone on the beach to sell their knock off Oakleys or jewelry and I saw several "salesman" getting hauled off in cuffs. Playa is more a kick back and relax type of place. I only went downtown once and it did seem to be a popular place, but there were several places that were closed due to hurricane damage, but I'm sure they are open now. If they don't have any kids, I wouldn't reccomend the Gala. Here is a map of Playa. The Gala Beach is the furthest hotel to the south. The area highlighted in yellow is the market area where all of the bars and resaurants are located.

It's General Discussion. Everyone chimes in when they can about helping someone out.

Let's see if Jack can make you a moderator and you can decide what can be posted.
