I was thinking of making the jaunt to Ocean City during the little guy's Spring Break (he's 6) the week after Easter. Nothing too crazy...maybe 3-4-5 days something like that..

Anyway, anyone with suggestions on an area to stay...or hotels that are kid friendly? I know it will still be too cold to get into any beach action--but any other areas that might have a few more things to do? Amusement parks? Indoor Water parks? Anything like that? Is Ocean City kid-friendly in general?

Never been out there...usually do the Florida thing, but just looking for something different this time around.. Any info would be appreciated! Thanks!

Goose.....I am very familair with the place. I only live about 2 hours away and take my son there 2-3 times a year. We go for about a week during the summer then usually get down there during the off season a few times just to get away. Anyway....here's some info for you.

With a 6 year old, you would be better off staying on the boardwalk if you go. The way OC is set up is that it runs about 140 streets - one long strip from the inlet north almost into Delaware. The boardwalk area starts at the inlet and goes up to around 26th street. In the summer months, this place is packed with families with kids since it's full of shops, eateries, arcades and 2 sets of rides down by the inlet. There is one other amusement park around 33rd street which is good for kids 7-under but its only open during the summer months.

The rides wont be open in early April but the arcades are open. Not sure what kind of hotel prices are in your range, but I always stay at the Holiday Inn on 17th street. They have an indoor pool and every room has a jacuzzi hot tub. It's expensive as shit in the summer (about $400 a night - but if you see the outdoor pool for kids you'll know why people pay it) but in the off-season I would guess you'd be paying $130-$150 a night. You can google this and get more info on the place.

Just outside of OC there are go kart places but not sure how many are open in off season. My son isnt into them yet. Rt 50 comes into OC around 4th street near the inlet. On 50 just a few miles outside of OC is where you can find the go kart places and probably a few laser tags places and putt putt. Inside of OC there is putt putt on almost every street but alot of them close down in off season.

If you're driving from Cleveland you're talking about a 7 hour drive. You better make it a long weekend (Fri-Mon). Some hotels have more to do for kids where you might get an indoor pool and even a small game room. Most of the hotels down on the boardwalk are older and dont have these modern features. There are nice hotels all over though. I prefer to stay on the boardwalk, especially in summer, cuz driving is crazy during the summer, plus I like to walk the boardwalk. You can also rent bikes in the offseason to ride up and down the 5 mile boardwalk.

When I go there during the off-season we spend some time around the hotel, some time down on the beach playing football or frisbee, then some down on the boardwalk hitting the arcades. The arcades will empty a wallet in a hurry. Most games are $1 although you can find some for less, but they are few and far between.

For the distance you'd be coming, I am not sure there is enough to keep YOU happy and supplied with money. If you're willing to spend spend spend, and your son is like mine and a video junkie, then he will have a good time with the arcades.......but you might get tired of the place in the off-season for 4 days. Alot could depend what kind of hotel you choose as to how much you like it.

The place gets even more expensive in the summer. It's Maryland's primary beach resort and it's absolutely nuts there in the summer. I go for a week in July and will probably make my hotel reservation in early February.

If you have any other questions, let me know.

Just a few more things that came to mind. Some pros and cons of staying on the boardwalk as opposed to other places further north of the boardwalk.

The boardwalk pros - you dont have to drive once you're there. This is a huge plus in the summer. You are close to where you rent bikes and close to the arcades.

The boardwalk cons - most of the hotels are older and less modern.

The pros of staying off the boardwalk - the hotels are more modern and you're more likely to find indoor pools and game rooms. I recommend The Princess Royale (94th street) if you stay off the boardwalk.

The cons - you have to drive to get to the inlet area. There are alot of those cheap shops you find on boardwalk resorts, but your son will have 0 interest in them I am guessing.

I dont know of any indoor water parks. Hell you got Kalahari right there. Nothing like that here. I took my son to Kalahari for his spring break last year when he was 9. We had a great time.

The rest of OC is hotels, restaurants, shops. It's not as kid-friendly in the off season as it is in summer. Every family goes there in the summer cuz everything is open....rides, go karts, outdoor water slides, putt putt.....but most of that stuff doestn fully open till Memorial Day.

I go there just to get away for a quick weekend in the offseason....but after 2 days I am usually broke and ready to come home unless I can keep my son on the beach throwning the football around...which usually gets old in about a hour.

went there last summer with the family.wife and 3 kids.liked it so much think im going back this summer.about 5 hr drive from where i live ,i like driving for a getaway with the kids so i went there.the beach was clean, boardwalk was huge.the kids loved it,lots of things to do for them..very family freindly, but i dont know about spring break, looks like it has great potential as a party place also, might be to many young drunk adults at that time...i stayed at CASTLES IN THE SAND,nice clean place with its own private beach.has its own tiki bar and grill right on the beach, nice hang out and good for lunch.cost me about $250 a day for the room,i think it was worth it.perfect for family, boardwalk a few blocks away.its located a few blocks from the heart of the place, but lots of stuff around there to..and if it is a party place at that time, this hotel is on the other side of the bars and stuff like that.

Moe....thats a good point about being a party place. If you take your family, dont go in early June. For about 3 weeks it's "Senior Week" down there and you walk without bumping into some obnoxious 16-18 year old who thinks they own the boardwalk.

In April, you wont find many teenagers partying. They save themselves for the summer. Off-season is mostly locals and people just looking to get out of town for a quick weekend getaway.

i live in OC. September and October by far the best two months to be here. Water is still very warm, everything is still open, and it is not packed like july and august.

The spring can be hit or miss with the weather. Water is cold and can make the beach a chilly place to be if the wind is onshore.

Every year the place gets more and more packed its insane. Been here along time and the growth in the area is crazy. Condos have taken over.

Make sure to try some of the Thrashers fries with malt vinegar and salt, they're the best!!

Seacrets is a cool bar to go to. Pickles pub is a neat sports bar there.

They have a Phillips restaurant which was very good. Another place on the boardwalk was an Irish grill/pub called shenanigans which had some very good eats.

There's also a very nice candy shop at the end of the boardwalk which has just about every kind of chocolate/fudge etc. you can think of. Make great gifts.

I go there all the time. Once a year w/ a few buddies to golf and relax!! I am 30 and I am not married. But I wanted to give my incite! I love the place. I usually stay at the Holiday Inn Hotel and Suites or the Spinnaker. The Suites are unreal. Plus, the pools are great for your kid. They have an outdoor pool that it heated and he would enjoy it. The price is steep though. I have been going there since I was born. Usually went w/ family and then stopped for a year and then started going w/ buddies. It is awesome. Enjoy

Thanks for taking the time to chime in....all good information! Sounds like you get much more a bang for your buck in the summer time, and not really that ideal in April. Maybe I'll give it a look in the summer. Thanks again, Gents!
