Q: Pitt finally went to a zone defense against Buffalo. Why is Pitt not playing more zone to protect Aaron Gray from fouls? He has a very limited backup at center and the offense relies a lot on Gray. Every minute he is out works to the other team's advantage. When Pitt gets into Big East play there will be pressure placed upon the team from their opponents and league referees to keep Gray in the lineup and not on the bench in foul trouble.

FITTIPALDO: Pitt only plays zone when the man-to-man is not working. The only reason Dixon played zone against Buffalo is because Buffalo was scoring almost every time down the court in the first half. The Bulls shot 57 percent in the first half. When Pitt needed stops in the second half, Dixon made some minor adjustments and went back to the man-to-man. It worked. Buffalo scored 14 points over the final 14 minutes of the game, and Pitt was able to pull out the victory. Pitt will be in trouble when Gray is in foul trouble for long periods, but the Panthers have not been in those situations much, if at all, in the first 10 games. If it happens, Kendall will have to move to center and Tyrell Biggs will have to play more at power forward. But don't look for Dixon to play zone in hopes of keeping Gray out of foul trouble. It just isn't the way Dixon does things. Pitt's bread and butter is its man-to-man defense.
