They ran the gauntlet, and tonight they return home relatively unscathed.

The Marist College men's basketball team is back in Poughkeepsie after enduring a grueling three-game road trip. The Red Foxes came away with two overtime victories ? at Siena and at Niagara ? and a loss at Canisius.

Marist is tied for second with Manhattan in the league standings at 6-2, and both teams are a game behind Loyola (Md.), which hosts Manhattan on Wednesday night.

Tonight, Marist hosts St. Peter's, which would appear to be a good opponent to invite to your place after such a road trip. In fact, if you

Problem is, the Peacocks (1-7 MAAC, 3-15 overall) are the only MAAC team to beat first-place Loyola this season ? and they did it on the road.

So much for taking wins for granted.

St. Peter's is led by three players who average in double figures ? Raul Orta (15.3), Todd Sowell (13.5) and Kevin Spann (12.9). Sowell is in the top three in the league in rebounding and blocked shots.

Marist beat St. Peter's, 89-70, at the McCann Center on Dec. 10.

The Red Foxes (14-5 overall) are led by senior point guard Jared Jordan, who leads the team in scoring (18.8), rebounding (6.5) and assists (8.8). Fellow senior guard Will Whittington averages almost 17 points per game, and seven-footer James Smith is at about 12 points per game. Smith has been inconsistent lately, scoring seven against Siena, 19 against Niagara, and two against Canisius.

Marist junior forward Ryan Stilphen, who missed the Siena and Niagara games last week with a knee injury, was used sparingly in the loss to Canisius. He scored nine points in 14 minutes.

Jordan honored

Marist's senior guard shares this week's MAAC Player of the Week honor with Loyola's Gerald Brown.

In back-to-back overtime victories over Siena and Niagara last week, Jordan averaged 22 points and 10 assists per game. He remains just one of two players in the nation who leads his team in points, rebounds and assists.
