LAS CRUCES ? The New Mexico State Aggies will try and keep pace with Nevada atop the Western Athletic Conference men's basketball standings tonight with a road game at San Jose State.
The Aggies have won their last two games and 15 of their last 16 heading into their second meeting with the Spartans this season.
Both NMSU and Nevada are 6-1 in league play. The Aggies handed Nevada its only loss in the WAC, while NMSU was upset by Louisiana Tech Jan. 17. The Wolf Pack beat Louisiana Tech on Thursday night and host Utah State tonight.
With three straight road games looming at Utah State, Fresno Stsate and Hawaii, tonight's game at SJSU and Wednesday's home game against Boise State are important in staying close to the top of the WAC.
"These next two games are huge for us," said NMSU head coach Reggie Theus, whose team has already matched last year's win total of 16. "We must continue to play well. We must continue to protect our home court and we have to find ways to win on the road."
The Aggies, who have at times this year struggled in the first half of games, have played well in the last two games from start to finish. New Mexico State beat nationally-ranked Nevada, 80-73, last Saturday, then swarmed
all over Idaho in an 84-66 win on Wednesday night in Las Cruces.
"We still feel like we can improve," said Aggie guard Shaun Davis. "We're still a team that is new in many ways. This is the first time for many of us playing together and I think we continue to make progress each time out."
The Aggies hope to get senior point guard Elijah Ingram back for tonight's game. Ingram, who is averaing 10.2 points per game, sat out Wednesday's win against Idaho with a high left ankle sprain. Theus was confident Ingram would return to the lineup tonight.
The last time NMSU and San Jose State met on Jan. 6, the Spartans gave NMSU fits before the Aggies rallied for a 74-68 win in Las Cruces. The Aggies got 21 points from junior guard Fred Peete and outscored the Spartans 19-10 at the foul line.
"I think we've learned our lesson from that game," said Peete. "We have to come out and play hard and smart right away. We have to put pressure on San Jose State from the start."
The Spartans (2-17, 1-6 WAC) have struggled this season, going 0-13 on the road and are coming off a 72-52 loss to Hawaii on Thursday. San Jose State made just 17-of-64 from the field and 12-of-23 from the foul line. Against NMSU in the first meeting, the Spartans made just 10-of-19 from the charity stripe.
San Jose State is led led by senior guard Carlton Spencer and senior post Menelik Barbary. Spencer is averaging 15.6 points per game, Barbary is shooting 52.6 percent from the field and is averaging a team-best 6.4 boards per game.
Second-year head coach George Nessman is trying to turn around a program that hasn't had a winning season since the 1993-94 season. The last time SJSU made the NCAA Tournament was in 1996 when the 13-17 team won the Big West Tournament.
Under Nessman, the Spartans have been competitive but have lost several close games, including three against NMSU. The Spartans have lost 74-68, 66-61 and 81-75 to NMSU. San Jose State's only league win this year was a 64-61 decision over Fresno State.
