ATM -3 vs Memphis 134 1/2

Schedule
ATM has clearly played a tougher schedule than Memphis this season. Conf USA truly is a mid-major and no other team in that conf had a chance of playing in the NCAA tourney without winning the conf.
Prior to the tourney Memphis has only played 3 ranked teams all year. 2 of those three coming almost 4 months ago in November. You can look at Memphis's 32-3 record and be impressed, but temper it with the fact that 16 of those wins came against conf opponenets that plain and simple were just not that good.

The only ranked team Memphis beat this season was Kentucky on Nov 22nd.

ATM has played 6 ranked teams this season going 3-3 and almosts 4-2 within a basket of knocking off Texas in Austin. And several of those ranked opponents were played later in the season giving you a much better bench mark than an early season win.

Coaching
Give a very slight edge in the coaching to Calipari. Love Gillespie for ATM, he has his guys believing in him and their system. These guys never take a second off when playing D. If somebody does take a play off, he get's his butt yanked and sits the bench. But Calipari is a master at working the officials and getting make-up calls. This is huge. he will do it again this Thursday.

One a side note, have to take my hat off to Gillespie for teaching sportsmanship. When these kids get a slam or a breakaway lay-up they don't taunt. They just get back on D. That comes from the coach. More parents should look at things like that when helping their kids choose a school to play ball at. Gillespie is teaching them to be better people not thugs. Nice to see in todays day and age.

The press won't hurt ATM
Louisville tried the press, but ATM's Law is just to fast. He can break it on his own half the time. ATM takes care of the ball. I don't see the press as a factor here, and Memphis relies on their press for a fair amount of point each game.

Josh Carter Factor.
Everyone knows the face of ATM - Acie Law IV (dad looks like a crack head and/or Snoop Dog):mj07: but Josh Carter is hands down the best shooter on the team. He has been mired in a mini slump the first two games of the tourney. 1 for 6 against Penn and 1 for 2 against Louisvile from 3 point range. He is due, averageing over 50% from 3 range for the season.

Home Court
ATM fans are going to travel. (about 200 miles from College Station to San Antonio) The aggies will have a huge advantage with the crowd. The Alamodome is a horrible venue for basketball. Just to big so the noise won't be an issue, but the crowd will be decisively in favor of ATM. Add the fact that these kids get to sleep in their own beds and you have to give the edge to ATM.

Intangibles
These ATM kids didn't win a big 12 game 3 years ago. Hard to believe when you think about the skill set of Acie Law. Then along comes Gillespie. Gillespie has absolutely turned this program around. These klds believe they are the best team in the tourney and have bought into his philosophy of Defense first. As the tourney progresses it becomes more and more a half court game. This has been ATM's M.O. all year. - Advantage ATM

ATM -3

ATM u 134 1/2 Love the under here. One of my biggest plays of tourney

Ohio St -4 1/2 vs Tenn 144 1/2

This game is simple to me. If the Vols can get Ohio St to run, Oden is a non-factor. Oden CANNOT run the floor. Against Xavier, Oden's tounge was hanging out most of the game. Spent a lot of time on the bench resting. Wait till Tenn gets a hold of him. Tenn is going to try and run from start to finish. Also watch for a delay of game warning on Oden after a made Ohio St basket. He does everything he can to slow the game down. His NBA stock is dropping IMO due to his lack of stamina.

The key thing I noticed about this game was the o/u. At 144 1/2, the odds makers think the public thinks Tenn will get Ohio St in an up tempo game, if that happens, Ohio St is done.

Not sure Ohio St falls into that trap.

Only two ways to play this game:

Ohio St and Under
or
Tenn and Over.

I think Tenn +4 1/2 is the play here but I am going light on the game and waiting to pounce at half time.

If Ohio St is up at half by 6 or more I am going to play the under, if Tenn is up by 6 or more at half I am going to pound the over for the second half.

They arent sleeping in their own beds. Even if they wer close enough to do that, which they arent, NCAA rules prevent it. They will be in a hotel in SA just like everyone else.

AM will be bothered by the press more than you think. And memphis certainly can cause foul problems more than Louisville, and we saw how close AM came to fouling out half the team.

I like Memphis and Tennessee to advance.

As for the Alamodome...it is a dump. No two ways about it. Bad place to watch a game, bad parking, bad concessions.

Thanks for the feedback. Always good to hear someone else's opinion, especially when its on the other side.

Big diff between most teams Memphis has played this year and this ATM team in terms of ball handling. Have watched ATM play all year long and having a senior handle the ball is huge. Young teams are easily rattled by the press, ATM is not a young team. Memphis will ultimately give up the press due to its lack of effectiveness and to many easy baskets. I just hope they give it up sooner rather than later so the games doesn't go over.

You can't deny the home court advantage for ATM. Their will be a pro ATM and a pro Tenn crowd. I guarantee it. Now that the horns are gone, even some of my local horn fan friends are going to the game to cheer for ATM. Its a state of Texas thing. Even the local news here in SA is promoting the aggies. We never hear about anything in SA but the Horns, Spurs and Cowboys. You wouldn't even know the Texans were an NFL team or there were other Div I colleges in Texas if you only watched the local news. That is, until it was anounced the Aggies were playing at the dome.

You are right about the dome. Been to more games there than I care to admit and it does suck for Basketball. Decent stadium for football but horrible for baskets. Pro or college.

As far as casuing foul problems your right. Jones is definetly prone to fouling. I think he has fouled out of or been in fould trouble in 80% or so of the games this season. But you also need to put the shoe on the other foot. If Memphis is going to press and "it bothers ATM more than I think" and they continue to do it, we all know along with the press comes fouls.

Memphis is already going to be short staffed with arguably their best player Douglas-Roberts hurt. You know he is going to play but you know he is not going to be 100%. Even if he was 100% I would still be on ATM.

No team has a bigger heart than these ATM kids. Will play hard every minute and fight till the end even if they are down 15 with 3 minutes to go. Can't say the same thing for Memphis.

Love Memphis, super athletic. Have been betting and winning on them all year. Just can't do it here.

Can only see this one going one way.

Nice write up Stop.

I am still analyzing this Memphis game because I think Memphis could pull the upset. Last game they played like a championship team and hit their free throws. They will also run on offense, that is for certain so I am not sure about the under, as I think this game could go well over. Hate to disagree with you but I think Memphis wins the game outright if they play like they did vrs Nevada...I just dont think Law can carry A&M past Memphis all by himself.

Not sure Memphis winning would be considered an upset if you buy into the fact they were ranked ahead of ATM during the season are a higher seed in the tourney. With that in mind, why is ATM favored by 3???

Memphis has to be in a rhythm to play their best ball. Press, trap, force turn overs, shoot quick, force the tempo etc..... ATM will disrupt Memphis' rhythm Thursday. They are going to make it a half court game and make Memphis work for every shot they take.

Also keep in mind ATM's perimeter defensive speed is outstanding. Memphis hasn't seen speed on the perimeter like this all season. They sure haven't seen it in their cup cake conference. Huge difference in the caliber these teams played in their conf and conf tourney's.

I sure feel you....... thinking Memphis can win it ........ They have had a great season and 3 or 4 guys that may play pro ball, but ATM's defense is going to dictate the pace of this game and the final score.

And because the whole pundit world is on the bandwagon. They could well win the game but have no business being a 3 point fav imo.

i agree, especially with how easily memphis handled nevada

Nevada was down 2 and missed a two-foot shot after a steal to tie the game at 64 around the five minute mark or less and then Memphis finished them off at the line with Nevada missing the rest of their shots. I would hardly call that handling them easily. That being said, Memphis was clearly the better team, which is what scares me...they should have had them finished off long before that.

was nevada not a top 10 team pretty much all year?

War Eagle,

Absolutely. Good point. I failed to clarify in the post that I was quoting Memphis' and ATM's regular season records against ranked teams. In the last round they both beat ranked teams. Memphis beat 15th ranked Nevada and Lousiville was ranked 16 when ATM played them.

The focus of my point was the strength of schedule of these two teams. Memphis played 2 ranked opponents all year and ATM has played 7 if you include the tourney.

Tigers' top scorer nursing sprained ankle

March 19, 2007

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- Chris Douglas-Roberts, Memphis' leading scorer, did not practice because of a sprained left ankle Monday as the Tigers prepared for the NCAA tournament regional semifinals against Texas A&M.

"The kid says he's going to play, but you never know," Memphis coach John Calipari said in a conference call with reporters.

Douglas-Roberts went down in pain with about eight minutes to play in the Tigers' 78-62 victory over Nevada in New Orleans on Sunday.

Memphis athletic spokesman Bob Winn said Monday that Douglas-Roberts' ankle would be re-evaluated each day.

"He's got three days to try to get well," Winn said.

Calipari said he was unsure if the injury would keep Douglas-Roberts on the sidelines Thursday night in San Antonio.

"You can't play in a game like this at 75 percent, 80 percent. And especially the way we play them," he said. "If you're breaking down defensively or you're not able to stay up with the pace of the game, it's just you've got to sit back and let these other guys go."

Mem had to shoot well above their avg at the stripe or the nevada game could have gone the other way. The bulk of the crowd was memphis blue. A&M will be far better represented this week than both previous Memphis foes. Loss of an offensive weapon doesn't help Mem's cause.

UCLA -3 vs Pitt o/u 123 1/2

Very interesting game here. Coach vs former assistant.

When the line came out at 3, I just knew it would go up quickly to UCLA -5 or even -6, but here we are two days later and it still sits at 3.

UCLA is tough, tough, tough on defense. Pitt godd defensive team also. Neither team will try to blow the other out due to respect issue between coaches. This is going to be a grind it out 40 minute half court game IMO.

Home Court advantage basically goes to UCLA with the game being played in San Jose.

Pitt came into the tourney not playing their best ball having lost to GTown by 23. In the tourney they beat a fair team in Wright St and really got all they could handle in a surprising and talented VCU team.

UCLA basically followed a very similar pattern. Losing its last two games prior to the tourney and getting a competitive game from Indiana to advance to the sweet 16. UCLA's defense is what has kept them in the tourney and what I believe will help them get to the next round.

The only thing that scares me about this game is the "Furman Factor". You MadJacker's remember a few weeks back when most of the post here thought Furman should be getting 10-12 instead of 2 1/2 points against Davidson I believe it was. Some were smart enough to see it was a trap. I wasn't. Furman loses by only 2 and covers.

Have a strange feeling about this UCLA game. Think the "Furman Factor" is at work. Ironically, I think I would like UCLA more here if they were favored by 5 or 6.

I really like the under 123 1/2 in this game though. To much defense. Coaches will keep it close. :00hour :00hour

Kansas -8 1/2 vs S Ill o/u 126

Been mulling over this matchup for a while.

Really wanted to make a case for taking the 8 1/2 but just couldn't do it.

This mathcup is about speed and size. Kansas is just to big and to fast for S Ill. 8 1/2 is a big number to lay here but when you take Kansas' speed and size advantage and then add the fact that they are a great defensive team, the possibility exist they could beat S Ill by 20.
S Ill plays great D and I expect they will keep it close for a while, but Kansas' greyhounds remind a lot of Memphis in the sense they have "spurtability".

Kansas can put 10 pts on the board in about 50 seconds.

Kansas is playing the best ball right now of any team in the tourney. Can't see things changing today.

Just to much talent on the Jayhawks. KU rolls by 15.:00hour :00hour

4 -2 for the south and west region. Hope to do a little better tonight.

East Region

GTown - 7 1/2 over Vande

GTown playing outstanding ball right now. To much size for Vande. Vande has got to shoot a very high % from 3 land to keep this close. I'll take Green, Hibbert and Co

UCS +8 1/2 over NC

USC is hungry. These guys were very impressive against Texas to get here. THing they lose but keep it close. Like them 1st half also.

Also like the over. Got it at 149 1/2. It has gone to 151 but I still like it. Best play of the night.

Midwest Region

UNLV +3 1/2 over Oregon

Gut feel on this game. I see a ton of people on Oregon and keep hearing about how easily they handle Winthrop. I think Kruger's guys bring it tonight.

Florida -10 1/2 over Butler

Betting against Butler here. Expect the traditional half ass effort form Florida the first half. Butler keeps it close maybe even up at the half and Florida's superior talent, size speed, experience etc. etc. etc. blows Butler out 2nd half.

Hope Butler is up at half. Looking for a good line at half to jump on Florida big.

Good Luck Guys :00hour :00hour :00hour
