i understand that the 1080 has a higher resolution...

has anybody has experience with both?.... i`ve been in stores and i`m not sure i see a huge difference(with so many t.v.`s around it kind of skews your perception a little)....

is it actually worth the extra $500 or more they`re askin` for the extra pixels?........
i think 1080 is the highest bandwidth available...

just spend the extra bucks and get the max?...

any help or opinions appreciated

GW:

I had a 720p and just upgraded to a 1080p TV. The primary decision was that it was to the SONY SXRD - in my opinion, the best 1080p TV on the market, by far, due to the SXRD technology. It has won product of the year the last 2 years (although so many different organizations give out awards, it's hard to know who to believe).

Does 1080p make a difference (for the price difference). Unfortunately, it depends. It will be a little sharper for HDTV - which you may nor may not notice, based on your viewing distance. The recommended distance is approximately twice the size of the screen. So, if you have a 50 inch TV, they say you should not be any farther than 100 inches away - just over 8 feet. You need to be that close to see the HD resolution - if you get further away, your eyes can't make out and appreciate the detail.

That same phenomenon would apply to 720p versus 1080p. If you are planning on sitting further away than twice the screen size, then it probably isn't a big deal.

One exception - if you are planning on adding a HD DVD Player or Blue Ray DVD Player, I would strongly suggest getting 1080p. This would include the Playstation 3, which has Blue Ray built in.

I can tell you that the movies on Blue Ray I watch in 1080p (which is all of them) going to a 1080p TV are amazing. WAY better than broadcast HD TV signals. And Playstation games (some of them) are also made to output 1080p - and they are amazing too.

So, in short - it depends on your budget and what you plan on watching. 720p TV's should be a great value right now since it is old technology. Pesonally, I always buy the best - so it is at least 2 years before what I have becomes old technology. But beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Pick a couple of TV's you are interested in, sit down the same amount of inches away from the screen that you'll be when it's in your house and compare to see if you can tell a difference.

Good Luck!

Heaven, oh!!, this isn't it?!
GW,
It really depends on what your going to use THIS set for? I have been doing too much research on this stuff, but think it will pay off for me soon:SIB
Anyway, if you have a theatre setup, with a room dedicated for it, then spend the $$$ and get the 1080P, you wont regret it. If you are using as a second set, or computer monitor, then dont spend the money  , thats my quick take on it.
We are already seeing huge price concessions, and SOME of the issues with these first generation panels are being dealt with.
Personally, I like the Samsung, then Sony, but will not buy right now due to technology coming around the corner.
Thats what I have for now.........

Franky :)

Gw,

If you are buying the TV as more of an "investment" go 1080p. Prices will come down on Blu-Ray, and HD DVD. You don't see a ton of difference in the stores, because nothing is broadcast in 1080p. Very few stores will put Blu-Ray next to a standard dvd player hooked up to a 720p, and let you compare that way. But if you are buying for the future, then might as well upgrade. However, if you just are looking for something for an apartment, or plan on moving soon, you'll do fine with a 720p and saving your $$$.

With the exception of Fox, all other sports are broadcast 1080i, and fox uses a 720p. The 720p looks very sharp on some sets, especially the old bulky projectors, but I find it looks almost grainy on an LCD. Those who have the big projectors claim that the Fox has the best HD sports coverage, and they used to also, until they realized very few ppl knew all the numbers...they used to advertise "Fox HD broadcasting in 720p, the highest standard in sports" something to that effect. Furthermore I think it will be a LONG time before 1080p is the broadcast norm, mainly because it doesn't have to be. It kind of follows the old dilemna with computers...you had , actually still do these computers with capabilities to process x amount of information in y time, and yet the software never came close to demanding any of the technology.

Good luck with your search,
jb

whoa.....excellent info guys........

i got better info here than at some of the big retailers(best buy/circuit city).....

i have a 35 inch mitsubishi "picture tube" which is very nice...it`s around 10 years old and just won`t go away...still,it`s so fricking big and heavy....it`s on a custom made stand with hidden rollers...but it`s so big and heavy to manuver over wall to wall carpet... takes up so much room....

i`m looking mitsubishi(i`m seeing mostly projection, which i`m not crazy about)sony.the sharp aquos and/or anything panasonic...

picked up a panasonic dvd/vcr recorder a while back...and it works great....originally bought a sony, but their built-in copyright protection was way to harsh... i can record a broader range of cable programs with the panasonic.....i don`t understand why the panasonic copyright programs are different than the sony.... ..whatever..

i may have jumped the gun, because now i`m seeing these dvd recorders with the "upconvert" capability...

one more thing....i have the comcast digital premium plan...i get all the premium channels...obviously i can`t bring in the digital channels without the capability....they`re there...i just can`t watch them...

do you guys know whether i`d need to purchase any more services or devices if i buy t.v. with an integrated digital tumer?...

the hdmi card slot thing is a tad confusing....

can`t tell you how much i appreciate the help...you guys are the best....

The cable box will be your actual tuner. So you don't have to worry about buying an HD ready tv just a HD capable tv. The one plus of the HD ready is that if you plan to hang it on the wall and want the clean no wires look you can get a cable card from comcast which just slides in the front. One downfall of this is no onDEmand capabilities.

Once I got my tv I added an HDTV recorder for 10 a month to my account and 5 to get the HD channels...sounds like you already have the recorder so I'm thinking they only charge you the 5. Recording HDTV takes up alot more storage on you box then the regular broadcast.

Fwiw this is the plasma tv I'm looking at (not sure if you mentioned plasma/proj/lcd). Rated very high on Cnet and good price at 6ave.com where shipping is free and I have purchased before.

I have researched plasmas extensively and come to the conclusion that panasonic is best bang for the buch and pioneer is first class.

Here is the pioneer 50" plasma with 1080p....pricey but you have been killing it in the boxing forum lately so maybe...

GW, I would suggest that once you decide on what you want you look on slickdeals.net or fatwallet.com. Look at both of the forums and if you can be patient then you'll find the absolute best deals possible. The people on these forums help each other out by finding the best deals around and then they sell them on Ebay. I found my brother in law a samsung dlp for 600 less than what Best Buy was advertising as their sale. Usually you can get free shipping to go along with it.
