He was one of my Dad's favorites. They went to the same college back East in the early 50s.
I ended up in Don Ho's Island Grill at the old Aloha Tower market once. Pu pu's 1/2 price at happy hour and thought tho a tourist trap, how bad could they be? Turned out some (like the luau pig) were real good! Bar overlooked the Honolulu harbor and barkeep was a sportsbettor! and then they had some local guitarist come on and play. An unexpectedly nice early evening that day!
from interview with Don Ho in the Honolulu Weekly:
You?re allowed one last meal. What would it be?
Get your pencil and paper out. OK, spicy garlic shrimp from Eastern Paradise on King Street, arrabiata from Capricciosa, lobster with black bean sauce on noodles at Fook Yuen, chicken long rice at Ono?s, kai see mein at Helen?s Chinese Food. I?m giving you all my very, very favorite restaurants, my very favorite foods, you know. Royal crab at Young?s Fishmarket. That?s a Hawaiian restaurant in Kalihi. Turkey ?okole from Young?s. Pig?s Feet from Hong Kong?s Noodle House. Poke? The best is at Izakaya Nonbei?the best. Huevos Americana from La Bamba, hot sour soup at Woodland?s?the greatest. Lamb at Aku Bone. One time they gave me some lamb. It was really out of sight. Also at the Grill, I usually like the fish and chips. And a big bowl of poi for all of this.
